Dirt 2 CPU benchmarks with DirectX 9 and DirectX 11: Phenom doing well, quad-cores rule at PCGH

PCGH ran processor benchmarks in Dirt 2. According to their results the game runs well on a dual-core with 3.0 GHz, but is much faster on triple- or quad-core systems. They also checked the performance in DX9 and DX11 and found out that with the new API the HD 5870 used for the test becomes the limiting factor for any processor faster than a Core 2 Quad Q6600.

Running the graphics on max settings doesn't leave much for directcompute to take off the CPU. If anything it (Directcompute) just makes the CPU pick up it's (GPU) slack like always (albeit in a much more functional way). I guess it's still pretty impressive though.

darkequitus5259d ago

Well, as long as it is over 60fps the game will runs smooth. That is twice the FPS of the 360 and PS3. My monitor cannot handle 90+ fps, so all the high number would be bragging right and nothing more.

LostDjinn5259d ago (Edited 5259d ago )

The thing is if you were to run the graphics at a lower setting it'd give you a more accurate idea of the impact of directcompute on CPU's.
That's my only qualm with the results. PC vs console game quality had nothing to do with it. Anyone with more than six brain cells knows how that fight will end.

AzraelGauss5259d ago

... you are right that lower settings would be better for CPU tests, but if you reduce the graphics settings in Dirt 2, several features that are stressing the CPU, are deactivated, so the the overall workload for the processor is reduced.

TheIneffableBob5259d ago

Nobody's going to play this on low settings if they have a DirectX 11 graphics card. The results as they are now are more representative of real-world gameplay than if the settings were put on low.

LostDjinn5259d ago

AMD/ATI have gone all out with OpenCL and the I7 is no stranger to it. Why do you think it outperformed the other CPUs so badly? The really amusing thing will be to see how the next cards will increase the CPUs tested here.
Bottom line is I wasn't as blown away with them as I thought I would be buy hey, these cards new. It'll be fun to see them grow.

FantasyStar5259d ago

@AzraelGauss

Yeah, I agree with you. Looking at the DX11 results: just watch this CPU benchies flatline with each other.

One idea that comes to mind is Larrabee. A CPU+GPU combo can allow for GPU to offload some of its tasks to the CPU like tessellation (hypothetically) mainly because the two chips would be on the same controller and therefore reduce latency between devices greatly which can theoretically improve performance and quality overall.

NRG5259d ago

Bob has the right idea. The results would not help anybody if everybody looked at the page and asked themselves, "Okay, but how much of a difference is the CPU going to make if the settings are on high, the settings I want to play on?"

If the article wanted to focus purely on CPU performance, then maybe they'd use low settings or include both high & low.

Yep, I misunderstand what you was saying. I Did not even click on the 2nd slide for a full picture. Dumb me. LOl

Both the PS3/360 are smooth tbh.

This game is very processor hungry.

You have to remember, these pc tests are being done with a 5870, that most people do not have.

But the tests here.

http://www.pcgameshardware....

Do prove that even with an 8800gtx, your pushing 40fps. at 1280x1024. with x4aa.

But that you need a hefty processor to do so.

Seriously though, it is one tasty looking game on any system.

darkequitus5258d ago

I have a phenom X4 @2.8Ghz with A radeon HD 4870 OC, W7 x64 + 4Gb ram. I ran the benchmark in the demo @ 1600x900 and got an average of 54 fps. I did have a few instances of stutter. I don't know why though.

What is the 8800GTX equivalent to?

For me, Rallisport Challenge 2 (Xbox) without a doubt. Amazing gameplay, and fantastic track-design and visuals.

I'm not impressed with much in terms of racing this gen. Graphics have been really raised racently, and it wasn't by the "two kings" (GT and Forza) in racing. Shift 2 and the upcoming Project Cars are now DOMINATING racing games graphically, GT5 and Forza 4/H do not even compare. But physics and gameplay-wise, most everything's been "off" aside from a select few. My short list would be.

#1 GT5. It's still rocking everybody in terms of gameplay and variety. It's got every kind of 4 wheeled racing almost from Karts to F1 and everything in between. GT needs to step it up graphically now though. Forza is the LEAST of their worries there.

#2 Motorstorm Pacific Rift. Just the #1 most fun and intense arcade/off-road racer ever made or ever will be made. SOOOOOO much variety compared to the bare bones (but great) first game, and a way better racing game than the 3rd game which was more like Split-Second than MotorStorm in THIS Motorstorm Fan's opinion.

#3 F1 Championship Edition. This PS3 exclusive launch game is imho still the best F1 game this gen in terms of the racing.

#4 FerrariChallenge/SuperCar Challenge. Alot of people havn't heard about these, they got VERY little attention. They sucked because not alot of cars, but it's a fact that System 3 put into these PS3 exclusives (they were on Wii too, but they weren't as advanced) the most advanced, realistic physics to ever be in a console racer. The same physics they put into their PC sim. Good graphics for the time too. Very under-rated.

#5 Shift 2. This is only here because I think graphically, it's a sneak peek at the next level in racing sim graphics. Project Cars is improving on that. But Shift 2 has HORRIBLE physics and I disliked playing it. If Project Cars can get the physics more in line than Shift 2, and have enough of a garage to have the variety in the racing while keeping the online field fairly even like GT5 does, it will truly be the next level of racing sims, and something may actually pull me away from GT5, which nothing has based on gameplay.

Also: WipeOut HD- awesome game, awesome value, it's expansion makes it an even better value, top notch quality.
