Death of PC Gaming May Mean Death of Windows

In the past I argued that PC Gaming is far from being dead but the more I think about it the more I start believing that I was wrong.

The PC industry still makes more money per year than any of the consoles. I don't get how it's 'dying'.

evrfighter5274d ago

"PC Gaming Alliance Boasts 11 Billion Dollar Revenue for PC Gaming in 2008"
http://news.softpedia.com/n...

But the number crunchers in the PCGA have stated that pc gaming was around $12.7 billion. up almost 20% from 2007
http://www.pcgamingalliance...

"Very rapidly the PC is becoming the largest gaming platform in the world"
-John Riccitello, EA CEO May 2009

But what do I know, Oh right pc gaming is dying. I'm gonna go sulk in a corner now.

darkequitus5274d ago

How many windows users are there in the world? 300M+ (individuals and business users). How many of them would be classed as gamers? So if gaming on the PC (I assume non MMO or Popcap style gaming) stopped tomorrow, How will Windows die?

Besides, look how much money is being made on MMO and those Popcap type games. Maybe there is less hardcore type games. Gamestop is not helping, hence steam is a godsend, so who needs them.

Nvidia, and AMD/ATI are moving beyond catering for gaming only. Hey, I use my Radeon HD 4870 OC More for video transcoding and Adobe CS4 than I do gaming lately these days.

Letros5274d ago

GPU market went up 30% last year, PC gaming is still going strong. Don't see why people want it to die off, without the advancements on the PC, consoles would be stuck with what they have today, there's a reason why consoles are dirt cheap today and it follows in Moore's Law plot.

Nihilism5274d ago (Edited 5274d ago )

@Letros

We live in the age of fanboys with the 'there can only be one gaming platform' mentality. As long as there are PC's there will be pc gamers, and I don't see computers going away anytime soon.

Viva La PC gaming

@HDgamer

You'll have to forgive the author, when you're 12 years old it's hard to grasp all different aspects.

IdleLeeSiuLung5274d ago

Windows will die, because the gaming market is soooo much larger than the other uses? Stupid article!

PC gaming might die, but Windows and PC will thrive until something can replace it. If anything, it is more likely to morph.....

Letros5274d ago

The most appealing aspect to PC aside from the best graphics is the freedom, open source platform, ventrilo, tons of indie games, use whatever mouse and keyboard you want, hey pop in the 360 controller if you want, don't have some big brother corporation telling me what I can and can't do, well then there's IW.

Oh I forgot to mention game prices, constant digital download discounts, AAA games for $10? Sure!

I also have a PS3, which I play for the exclusives.

HolyOrangeCows5274d ago (Edited 5274d ago )

.....is that if PC gaming became more common on Mac/Linux/etc, it would probably pose a fair threat to Windows.

I'm not going to get into a debate about which OSes are "Best", but I know plenty of PC gamers that would be more than happy to cut out OS costs (If all they needed was Ubuntu or something), because gaming and web browsing are their main uses of the PC.

Just a thought.

EDIT: If you're going to hit the "Disagree" button, a response would be appreciated.

Nihilism5274d ago

I think it's safe to say that it was taylor35 , as soon as he posted we all had a disagree, the agree is from me, you know how to repay the favour to our good friend taylor though, I always find the negative feedback button helps to curb habits of ignorance

Viper75274d ago

PC gaming is not dieing, changing is the more fitting term. The typical games might become more and more console ports or vanish all together. (depending of course on how piracy will affect the game sales in future and what kind of methods may be used to counter it.)

However if games become more and more like browser/simpler games and many people switch to play "games". It's very possible that Linux distributions(Google chrome OS might give a long wanted boost to hardware support etc) and Apples MAC's might see some boosts as well. However as industry is very much used to Windows systems the change wont be fast.

darkmurder5274d ago

Yeah Windows will die because its only used for gaming....

The Lazy One5273d ago

I didn't disagree with you, but Mac's getting more games wouldn't be very threatening to windows at all.

Windows biggest market is businesses, which macs really aren't shooting for very well. Linux is it's biggest competitor there, and it has nothing to do with games.

Purely on a gaming front though, if macs did get every game windows had, how many people do you know that would want to spend $2000 on a mac that's equally or less powerful than a $1200 PC you make yourself.

Most "gamers" can usually do PC building or know enough that it doesn't justify the extra money you'd spend on a mac.

XxZxX5273d ago

not going there anytime soon.....trust me, i'm a doctor haha

HolyOrangeCows5273d ago

My point was more about Linux based OSes, though.

Women who get picked up in bars, put out.

If you tease a angry bear, he'll probably kill you.

These conclusions are all based on common sense.

mal_tez925273d ago

Even if I didn't play games on my computer, no way would I get a mac.

I don't see why anyone would buy a mac, Overpriced hardware and limited functions make it obviously inferior to PC.

Lol death of windows when pc games can be played on other OS's that don't belong to MS.

HolyOrangeCows5274d ago

Because they've shifted most of their gaming focus to the 360.

Then again, it's not all that unusual. It IS in their nature to let third parties worry about games for their platforms.

Golfcoachh5274d ago

The death of windows blah blah blah. yeah right, until someone convinces the 300 million people who are comfortable using windows to use something else, don't see it happening for a long long time. I know google is yappin about their os, and mac lovers love the mac os, and then there is linux, which I hear is great, but takes a bit more computer savy person to run it. So no fear, windows will be here for a while.

Kyur4ThePain5274d ago

That is one of the most laughable headlines in a long time.
Makes it sound like gaming is the only thing that drives Windows.

WOW - I just noticed...that entry is over a year old.

condorstrike5274d ago

the worst article ever, can someone be so naive as to think gaming will impact Windows that much, and to think that APPLE will hit that market... laughable.

easy math...
$600 Pc that will run any current gen console game and more.
or $1200+ laptop that's an overprice Jukebox. uhmm...?

this guy must have a PIII running Windows ME...lol.

TheIneffableBob5274d ago

"this guy must have a PIII running Windows ME...lol. "

I wouldn't be surprised if this were true.

How can you trust people when you have shit like this going on

Honestly I think the game looks average first impressions wise and will probably die off within a year or so.

Jeez man we want games to grow and develop and if we're prevented from that this is how games dying amidst other complications.

All Hopes I Had For A Prey Sequel Have Been Crushed — Well Done, Microsoft

The magnificent Prey was once again abandoned as Microsoft disregarded Arkane Austin's achievements and crucified it just for Redfall.

RaidenBlack1d 1h ago

well, not entirely ... the main Arkane studio i.e Arkane Lyon's still there ...
Its only that, the sequel will take more time now ... after Blade & Dishonored 3

MrBaskerville5h ago

But who knows, Dishonored 3 could have been Austins next project, so might be cancelled.

-Foxtrot23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

Not even this Prey

Still longing for a sequel to the original Prey with Tommy

The studio didn't even want to call this Prey, it was just Bethesda being dicks to them for some reason.

RaidenBlack18h ago

MS closed Roundhouse Studios (ex-Human Head Studios) as well

Yui_Suzumiya8h ago

Yeah, that's who was going to do the original sequel.

isarai15h ago

Came here to say this, my hooes for a Prey sequel died when this "Prey" came out

Profchaos6h ago

Prey 2017 still hurts to play because what could have been looked so incredible

Profchaos6h ago

Same Bethesda basically screwed over the original developer team human head back around 2011 so it was really never going to come despite a honestly amazing trailer. I liked prey 2017 but it always held a stink of disappointment due to what we never got

FinalFantasyFanatic1h ago

I really didn't like this game, tried it because of how loved the original Prey was, played the demo of this one and thought it was garbage, it didn't feel nice/fun to play.

LostPotato23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

Keep dreaming then as Prey and Dishonored 2 did not sell well enough to get sequels.

Hence we got Deathloop and Redfall instead.

RaidenBlack18h ago

lol, Deathloop came from Prey: Mooncrash idea

Unknown_Gamer57947h ago

To everyone who cheered MS’s acquisitions, we told you so…

Inverno6h ago

Those people will just argue that Arkane Austin and Tango would've been shut down either way.

MrBaskerville5h ago

Zenimax allready put them in a tight spot by demanding them to do a multiplayer title. So it's not unlikely, considering how bad the game performed. They didn't stand a chance. MS had the money to save them and to correct Zenimax' mistakes.
