2009 VGA Nominees Announced

Spike TV today announced the nominees and categories for the biggest world-wide event ever to celebrate the video game industry, the 2009 "Video Game Awards ." The seventh annual "VGAs" will be a global event, broadcasting in over 180 territories and countries and gathering megastars from the worlds of video games, Hollywood, music, sports and more to honor the outstanding achievements within the video game industry during the past year. The two-hour event, taking place in Los Angeles, CA, will premiere LIVE on Spike TV Saturday, December 12 at 8:00pm, ET/PT (tape delay west coast). Beginning today, fans can vote for their favorite nominees at VGA.Spike.Com and GameTrailers.com.

I don't get how early 2009 titles are passed up so easily. Killzone 2 might not have been everyones cup of tea, but personally I thought it was one of the better shooters I've played the last few years. Not to mention the best looking one. I would have substituted that in for either ACII or probably L4D2.

But other than that, from what I see looks good. Uncharted 2/Naughty Dog should win those categories hands down. And I'm rooting for Beatles Rock Band as well.

I think for most people the GOTY will be Uncharted 2. Though I find most awards to be subjective and just because someone doesn't like Uncharted 2 as much as you. Doesn't mean there is something wrong with the game industry.

I've just finished playing Uncharted 2 a few days ago and had an excellent time. Though for 'Spike's Best PS3 game' I voted for Infamous as its my favorite PS3 game of the year.

Female and male performance categories completely snubbed the actors of Uncharted 2, IMHO. These are real actors who not only just voiced the roles but also mo-capped the scenes and actions of the characters. They should have named the category best likeness of your normal Hollywood b-actor considering the ones listed only went so far as to do some sub-par voice work and have their likeness scanned in for use by the artists and none of them took the time and effort that the Uncharted 2 cast did.

P.S. Hardest votes were Handheld games (GTA Chinatown vs. Professor Layton vs. Scribblenauts) and Voice (everyone but Jack Black). How the hell am I supposed to choose between the best voice of the Joker and Nathan Drake?

@Saaking - Word. If you are a connoisseur of great games (and honestly, regardless of bad grammar and fanboyism issues, N4G has plenty), do yourself a favor and don't watch this dreck. It's like looking at the Country Music Awards and wishing they had the same type of judgment as the music composer Pulitzers.

Don't even worry about who chooses the awards or who wins - the show is on Spike. Their station has been kept alive solely by UFC (not that there's anything wrong with the fighting itself, but the general audience is another story). Do not expect much out of anything sponsored and hosted by that station and you'll be fine. Actually, I'm surprised that Batman made it on the list - the reasons why that game is good are a bit nuanced for the VGA audience.

Don't give up gaming, Stan Lee! We want you to make a sequel to the SNES/Genesis Maximum Carnage!

BTW, I'm having a hard time deciding between Dragon Age (PC) and Demon's Souls for my personal Game of the Year, and I think I'm just going to stop deciding. They really are contending for the small amount of gaming time I still have!

MW2's soundtrack while good is not anywhere Marty's music. The Call Of Duty soundtracks are all easily forgetable.

Halo 3: ODST is probably the msot creative soundtrack released for an FPS game in years. The Film Noir elements definitly did wonders for the games atmosphere.

Have any of you heard the entire Demon's Souls soundtrack? It's extremely well-written. Motives are transformed on different tracks, instrumentation is varied quite a bit, and the compositions are unique - they air on the side of Orff's Carmina Burana at points, but even those points aren't just the brazen Carmina rip-offs spread across all media all of the time.

Well, you would have to complete Demon's Souls to hear all of the soundtrack, and it gets better near the end. I understand if you're unable to do that - seriously, it's a rough game.

Anyway, it's not even being considered, so we're left with mountainous orchestral scores composed of Wonder bread and powdered milk. UC2 might be a bit "ethnic," even slightly true to the cultures it represents at times, and it's epic, and MW2 may have cash-cow Hans Zimmer (not Zimmerman), but both of these soundtracks wind up being very generic - they sound like any old 2000's movie soundtrack with hardly any substance to them. One of those will win this award, but as with all of the categories, the truly innovative and great experiences will be (and already have been) ignored.

On the bright side, I can still sing you the UC2 theme. Can't do that with most games these days.

Also, the criteria were not named here. Are they listed anywhere in a non-PR way? Maybe the editors did a great job evaluating these, but games were only chosen if they met certain standards - selling to a certain amount of people, for example, because they want a large amount of people to be satisfied with the show.

We're arguing the reverse of people rebelling against the Oscars standards here. We'd like games that less people played to win because they actually deserved it for their quality. The Academy has had problems with the general public never seeing the movies they choose as the winner. Uncharted 2 did. Everyone loves that game it dosents crossover it breaks boundaries. It did made a huge impact on how action games are made.
Ratchet and Clank still has an impact you forgotten about the millons of fans around the world.
Killzone 2 people still play it, its still a solid shooter with graphics no 360 game was able to match yet.
Demon Souls 250,000k is amazing for a niche title.
What did MW2 did, its basicly a rehash of the same game with a different story and more perks. Yeah online is addicting but other than that did it made a positve impact?

It was all I owned and all I played so I had great experiences (especially at the young age) and I developed a fanboy mentality.

That is...until I actually PLAYED the SNES regularly at a new friends house. I was blown away by the games and realized that worshiping one system was retarded.

I favor the PS3 it is no secret, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate and enjoy many 360 and PC titles. Hell I probably favor PC gaming over PS3. I think MS has done some shoddy things this gen, and some games are over hyped a bit. Sony has also done some shoddy things and I also feel some of the hyped exclusives are overrated, but overall I feel the quality of the PS3 system and it's game library is superior.

This game of the year list is a huge fail every game on this list just came out with the exception of Batman and Uncharted 2(out only a month and clearly should be the Winner) But L4D2 really!!! if your going to put a game in there just so they can out a 360 only game (even though it's a multiplat game) they should have at least put Forza I would have used that for a 360 game over L4D which is clearly more of a PC title.

We all know MW2 will get this category Vote based on Fanboys flooding votes so the real clear cut winner Uncharted 2 will be snubed and give the little fanboys something to gloat about when it's winners are released.

Demons Souls is in the category for Best RPG I put my vote in for it but as I said before this is a "people's choice" show and the fanboys will run rampant on anything that is not what deserves to win.

L4D2 isn't an Xbox exclusive, even then its a damn good game and its certainly better than L4D1. Anyone who has played L4D2 can tell you its a great game, personally I've had more fun with L4D2 than Killzone 2.
