Old Games: Should Downloadable Content Be Free?

OXCGN looks at free downloadable content for older games and the future of digital distribution and consoles:

"I would love to see sales figures for downloadable content for games that were released 1-3 years ago. Some of this content hasn't ever changed in price and competes with new release games' downloadable maps and features.

In a world where everything, including the retail games themselves, depreciates does this make any sense?

No it doesn't.

But of course those in charge are certainly not obligated to lower prices or, even better, make the added content for older games free. But it would be both logical and, well, nice."

I save and spend mostly on new games not downloadable stuff, because I don't have a lot of cash. But I'd keep and play more of my games if I was going to get free stuff a few years later instead of trade them away like now.

Godem5275d ago

its nice to have free stuff, but I think a more logical thing would be to just let them depreciate in value over the coarse of time to eventually end up being around $1 or something.

BadCircuit5275d ago

Too much effort for them I bet!

XboxOZ3605275d ago

Excellent article, as always, and makes some very valid points about older games being offered for free after a certain period.

It would certainly boost my thoughts around a publisher and developer if they did such things, and would most likely have a positive effect on me supporting them with newer games that required payment.

allegionary5275d ago

I doubt they would offer older games, but their content they should!

ZombieAutopsy5275d ago

Free...maybe depending on what it is, Fallout 3 Dlc is well worth the money but Map packs that contain 4 maps isnt really worth 10$ to me (I still buy them but thats not the point). I do think that after maybe a year after the DLC is released it should get a price cut and eventually maybe even become free or very close to it.

allegionary5275d ago

Sure with Fallout and some of the Oblivion stuff it was big and worth some cash, but how many are downloading it now?

On the other subject I really hope they don't make the next round of consoles digital download only. No competition on prices would suck and games would never get cheaper, not just the DLC.

jack who5275d ago

thats how it was on xbl(1)

gaminoz5275d ago

But will it be only on the 360 that DLC prices stay pretty fixed, or on PSN and Wii too? PSP GO prices atm are more than what I can get the UMD versions for here in OZ.

allegionary5275d ago

I don't think it's just an MS thing, though paying for Gold is a sticking point...maybe they should give the free content for Gold members...

Why MW 2019 is still the best looking Call of Duty to date

MW 2019 is five years old at this point and on previous gen hardware, but it is still the best looking Call of Duty game to date.

MW was an excellent videogame. They messed up Spec Ops big time, but aside from this it was a huge step in the right direction initially. Most notably, at launch it seemed to come from a very cohesive creative vision that was felt across gameplay, to story to art style/visual direction. It was also very notably written by prominent ex-Naughty Dog guys that quit almost immediately before release.

That COMPLETELY dissolved through post-launch content and the full pivot to a "cross-mode" narrative that completely obliterated the cohesion in overall story direction. Warzone then "became" the new face of Call of Duty and the franchise completely removed itself from anything remotely creatively "good". It is a pure money machine, so I kinda get why they're doing it....but I personally completely lost interest.

I would love to see Infinity Ward move off CoD and get to make their own product with full control. They clearly have some massive talent in their ranks but it's perverted by Activision's corporate interests.

Switch and PS5 owners are gonna love this.

Stuart5756104d ago

Every article, console fanboy trite, all these years later. Let me explain it AGAIN, in simple terms for the fanboys. Sentient human gamers do have their preferred platform, however they will buy and own multiple platforms so they can enjoy the games they want to enjoy. I own and have owned multiple platforms, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and now Valve, simply to enjoy a wide range of games across a broad spectrum of platforms. It's great. You don't have to pick a 'team' and cheer them on through thick and thin, dissing the other 'team'. And for you 'VenomUK' to state 'Switch and PS5 owners are gonna love this', proves that you're a bit behind. Learn, enjoy, live, develop, trust and coexist if you can, life is better that way.

@Stuart5756
Well said.
This is why i never understand fanboying over hardware. This is not like a sports team, its just hardware. Why some people have this mentality to pick a side and stick with it and refuse to look at other platforms, therefore depriving themselves of games that are only available on those platforms. They are suppose to be gamers after all?

FinalFantasyFanatic104d ago

It's practically guaranteed to come to PC as well, if that's the case, I might pick it up after it gets a discount or two.

TheEroica104d ago (Edited 104d ago )

Thank goodness for pro gamer companies like Microsoft.... It's about time we unified platforms where now only corporate suits benefit! Pro gamers all the way. Thanks Microsoft!

Yup ... bring Gears 2, 3 Judgement as well as Fable II and Halo 5 to PC

phoenixwing104d ago

Online portions would be a bonus.

FinalFantasyFanatic104d ago

I'm really shocked that Halo 5 still isn't on PC yet, almost everything is ported over and that's the only Halo game that hasn't been ported.

Profchaos104d ago

Take it with a grain of salt this leaker has been wrong many Times

The connection has been rumoured in the past so there's some credibility but it's more if it's actually in testing or not

Father__Merrin104d ago

tell u what gears 3 on series x same 360 game but in 4k and 60fps is a dream it looks crystal clear

Sciurus_vulgaris104d ago

The Series X enhanced versions of Gears 3 and Judgement can at times look like Xbox One titles.

Concertoine104d ago

Yeah i got into Gears 3 multiplayer last year. People still play it a lot. Tons of maps and looks great with the 60 FPS.

Brazz104d ago

It would be funny to see Gears of War collection on Nintendo Switch.
