10 games that are extremely overrated

Colton West of GamesThirst writes: Have you ever found yourself picking up a game just because everyone and their mothers was praising it like crazy, only to play it and ask yourself why was it so hyped up in the first place? I've done that plenty of times and let me tell you, it set my wallet back quite a bit and sadly, it's money and time I will never get back. Here is a list of what I believe to be some of the most overly hyped and overrated games of all time. Keep in mind that this is not all of them considering my list is very long, so I'll just keep it brief.

Mario 64, no. A true masterpiece.

Ok, this guy is an idiot:

"release of the infinitely better Grand Theft Auto 4" compared to GTA:SA.

Halo 3, obviously.
Mass Effect, obviously.

Ikaruga, no one cares.
Marvel Vs Capcom 2, no one cares.

Doom, yes. Boring a hell game. Ultima Underworld destroyed it in both technology and gameplay.

Final Fantasy VII. And the retard inevitably throws this one in just for hits.

andron5293d ago

Jepp, he's off his rocker alright. LOL

And he fails to take into account that some of these games were awesome when they came out and still is. I loved Doom and Doom 2, and I think Doom 3 was an appalling addition to this great series...

The Meerkat5293d ago

I still play Mario on my N64 from time to time.

But ME, tried to do something cinematic that hadn't been done before and succeeded.

Fable 2 on the other hand tried something new and failed IMO.

And hate on Halo all you want but no game has come close to the features of Halo 3. Stat tracking, video playback, custom levels and 4 player co-op through the whole game.

Whut5293d ago

WTF!

Marvel Vs Capcom 2 shouldnt be there.

Super Mario 64 - shouldnt be there

Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas - shouldnt be there

Doom - shouldnt be there

Final Fantasy VII - shouldnt be there

Mass Effect - Shouldnt be there.

Half these games marked my childhood as a gamer.

LIST= Fail

Mr_Bun5293d ago

Mass Effect was extremely overrated. I had to force myself to finish it, just so I could have more gamer points than my friend that bought the game for me. It wasn't just because I spent 50% of the game in an elevator either.

A lot of walking, talking, elevators/loading and not enough action....GOOD game, but far from GREAT

Aloren5293d ago

Mass effect was fantastic. It still is.

Viper75293d ago

Doom shouldn't be there, its one of the best fps games ever made and has arguably done most for the fps games in general. I still play classic doom,2 and final Doom pretty often considering its a really old game.

The whole list is a joke because doom is there, and Doom3 was just a bad copy of half life with flashlight tag physics all these changes made doom3 booring as hell and not worth its name.

Redempteur5293d ago

mario 64, marvel vs capcom shouldn't even be close to this list ..

Mario 64 was the first game to do true 3D platforming right

Marvel vs capcom was one of the few games to do cross franchises battles right ( the other is super smash bros )

Mr_Bun5293d ago

What did you get out of the game that I didn't?

I felt it tried to be an action RPG but wasn't enough action or RPG.

Elwenil5293d ago

Eh, this is just another idiot "journalist" who thinks he can stir up some BS buy putting down some of the most legendary games in history. He completely blows off the fact that these games were popular when they were released because they were something amazing and different compared to what was out at the time. Most of these games were revolutionary to a certain extent. To bash them because he is a lazy gamer who doesn't like dialog or because the graphics that looked fine when released now look horrible? I mean seriously, what kind of retarded asshole compares the original Doom to Doom3 on the basis of graphics or gameplay? The two are worlds apart. If anyone knows this jackass, drag him out of his house and tar and feather him.

Lou-Cipher5292d ago (Edited 5292d ago )

5. Brutal Legend (crappiest game I have played this year)
4. COD MW 2 (its good, but way over scored)
3. Halo ODST (you know why)
2. Halo 3 (popularity doesn't mean Quality)
1. GTA 4 (Most overrated game of all time)

There is no reason Mass Effect/Mario 64/FF 7/GTA 3,SA,& VC should ever be called overrated.

i agree with Halo 3 and Mass Effect

S4NDM4N5293d ago

Honestly, I was so hyped up for this game. Bioware and Black Isle are my favorite RPG developers....

and well

The entire story in Mass Effect felt just so....generic. Like it was ripped straight from Star Trek and Lovecraft.

The RPG elements were poorly fleshed out. The combat was entertaining, and the cut scenes and cinematics were phenomenal.

But I hated how blatant the be good or be evil was. That is why I prefer Dragon Age over Mass Effect. There are a lot more grey areas in Dragon Age (not as much as the Witcher though), where as in Bioware it is pretty much BE GOOD or BE EVIL.

Half decent game from Bioware. Good game when not compared to the rest of Bioware games.

I'm still going to get the second one though. But I'm begging for a Dragon Age 2.

S4NDM4N5293d ago

Terrible article though.

GTA4 sucked balls. They pretty much took away all the quirky content and missions that made GTA games fun.

Halo 3 is not Halo 2.5

I hate it when people say that. halo 3 sucks IMO. It is dumbed down and way too arcadey for the masses. It is just mindless shooting and beating. reminds me of how MW2 went for the n00b, arcadey feel for the masses.

Halo 2 was awesome. People can call it over rated, but it changed online console gaming.

Why o why5293d ago

Halo 2 is still the best halo to many

Chubear5293d ago (Edited 5293d ago )

I've never played Mass Effect properly so I can't really talk on that but all but one game on that list shouldn't be there. All those games are known quality experiences so I don't know that the author was trying to do.

I could only see one glaringly obvious title from a series that indeed holds the title of Most Ridiculously Overhyped Game in gaming history.

Lou-Cipher5292d ago (Edited 5292d ago )

I loved Mass Effect, and although it had way to many bugs and glitches, it is still the best game on the 360 by a long shot.

I agree about Halo 3 VS Halo 2, you are right on the money about the differences between the two.

only game i agree with on that list is halo 3

Quickstrike5293d ago

Ok while Ikaruga was a hard and short game, the music was top quality. I played this game over and over just to listen to the music.

A Matter Of Trust: What The Game Industry Should Do To Win Gamers Back

Skewed and Reviewed have written an Opinion Piece covering issues in the gaming industry, how current issues were issues years ago, and what can be done to help restore consumer trust.

anast4d ago

Nothing. It's up to the gamers to stop consuming content from companies that they don't agree with.

Garethvk3d ago

How do you know if you agree with it or not unless you play it? Which without conventions forces gamers to rely on trailers. Perhaps Demos should be made more frequently. But companies need to do better as well.

anast3d ago

Wait until release. Watch Gameplay. Exercise patience.

Garethvk3d ago

But is that not what they have now? Tons of gameplay or are you talking about watching actual gamers play it versus the trailers and streams? The big issue is that some companies pay streamers and influencers and they create content but for me; that is hardly a fair, unbiased, and factual look at a game.

1nsomniac4d ago

Get rid of the suits in the industry and job done!!

Garethvk3d ago

They usually are attached to the money sadly. It would be nice to have gamers in charge but you have so much money invested that business people are needed. Hence the issue; you need people who know business but are also gamers who know have an eye to the community. It sounds simple in theory that if you give gamers quality games that they want to play; money will be made. But that is not always so.
