IGN: New Super Mario Bros. Wii Review

IGN really, really likes New Super Mario Bros. Wii. They have no qualms with saying this is a far better game than the Nintendo DS version, and it could easily be the finest Super Mario Bros. 2D platformer Nintendo's ever created. You should absolutely get a copy, no question.

Presentation - 7.5
Graphics - 7.5
Sound - 8.0
Gameplay - 9.5
Lasting Appeal - 9.0

Not a bad score. I might be picking this one up since I haven't bought a wii game since last year.

pangitkqb5287d ago (Edited 5287d ago )

Makes me wish I hadn't sold my Wii. :(

toaster5287d ago

I have heard almost nothing about this game until this review.

I'm surprised Nintendo didn't make a big fuss and have lots of publicity about this. Oh well. It's going to sell by the truckload. I'm sure as hell going to pick it when... wait. Anyone know release date?

lonestarmt5287d ago

EXACTLY.Reviews grade certain games way different than others. You say how its great because its old school then complain saying its too safe? WTH? the P4 just being another toad sucks though.

ico925287d ago

It's a great game, but I think the 8.9 is about right (maybe a 9.1). It's great fun with other people as are most Wii games, but play it alone and it's not as enjoying.

I wish Nintendo had better online, that way we could play this game online, and enjoy the multiplayer at all times.

And yes I have played it.

live2play5287d ago

thnks dude, it just stomps my goomba that they gave it this score. seriously theres just no way this game deserves lower than a 9 even if its only a tiny decimal. pure injustice.

eagle215287d ago (Edited 5287d ago )

IGN said it's "far better than the DS NSMB" and they gave that one a 9.5! IGN bumps their heads these days quite often! But still a great score.

The words mean more than the score to me in a review. "Finest 2D Mario" is such a great compliment.

pangitkqb5287d ago (Edited 5287d ago )

But I also think he is taking the relative weakness of the DS into mind when compared to the Wii. The Wii version is obviously superior to the DS version, but on a system with more than ten times the processing power, could have been more. As he points out in the video, why no online mode? Why two nameless Toad Characters that could have easily been replaced with other famous Mario Allies? Why give video run throughs...and not simply add the ability to record your own videos and, if it had online capability, post them for others to see?

The point is, this is a fantastic 2D Mario experience that could have been even better without tons of more effort. No doubt it still looks awesome and is a blast to play, but no online and two nameless characters? Really?

In the end, it will still be fun. Game on, my friends!

eagle215287d ago (Edited 5287d ago )

And he ended it "absolutely get a copy, no question".

I respect his opinion, but some of his "requests" are totally not needed and probably not even capable to run smooth online with a 15 million+ potential consumer base. And yeah, Game On bro.

haha! "stomps my goomba", ahhh nothin like a good laugh

Goodbye New Mario, I Won't Miss You

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first Mario 2D game in almost two decades without the New Super Mario art style, and it looks all the better for it

Am I missing something? It looks exactly the same, just higher resolution… Is this sarcasm?

specialguest314d ago

Yes, you're not observant if you think it looks exactly the same. It immediately appeared different to me from the start. Mario's 3D model will always be the same, so not much difference there. However, the animation they've given the Super Mario Wonder makes it look more like a CGI Mario animation where as the New Mario Bros game looks more like typical video game animation movements

__SteakDeck__314d ago

@specialguest Yeah those animations are insane.

FinalFantasyFanatic314d ago

You really didn't notice the difference? It's really obvious, I was surprised when I first saw the trailer.

Asplundh314d ago

"Am I missing something?"

Your glasses maybe?

Juancho51314d ago

This Mario game looks great, getting a switch for this and Mario RPG. CANT WAIT, TITS JACKED.

Profchaos314d ago

Yeah I liked how much more emotion could be conveyed through the new style at first glance I didn't see much difference but then rewatching the trailer I'm seeing more and more animations that remind me of the Mario artwork from the manual of smb3

Outlawzz313d ago

I hated the new super Mario bros Style. This new one seems a lot more expressive and less generic. I hope it's a good game

shinoff2183313d ago

I prefer the 2d Mario's. Me and my girl have played them all together and mario galaxy , Mario odyssey. The 2nd player option is extremely eh

89% Metacritic another stellar creative game.

SkatterBrain1773d ago (Edited 1773d ago )

Well if Little Big Planet went 3d with Dreams then I guess marios going 3D maker next, looking forward to that

King_Noctis1773d ago (Edited 1773d ago )

I think going forward it would be redundant to have another NSMB game on the Switch as the Mario Maker series can accomplish almost anything the NSMB series have level-wise.

jjb19811773d ago

Could you imagine a Mario 64 maker? Phenomenal.

Jin_Sakai1772d ago (Edited 1772d ago )

I’d rather have a Zelda Maker. The dungeon builder on the new upcoming Zelda: Links Awakening looks like a testing ground.

https://screenrant.com/link...

Aonuma hinted at the possibility of Chamber Dungeons evolving into a Zelda Maker game in an interview with Kotaku during E3. Reporter Jason Schreier asked Aonuma directly if a Zelda Maker was in the cards, to which Aonuma replied:

“I can’t predict the future, but if people do love this idea of arranging dungeons, I’ll keep that in mind going forward.”
