MW2 allows 8yr olds to become terrorists says Fox News

The media's at it again, blaming video games for society's woes. This time the target is Modern Warfare 2, particularly the scene which allows the player to be a terrorist in order to convince the enemy that he is indeed trust worthy. Fox News doesn't see it that way, in fact on their morning show Fox and Friends, co-host Steve Doocy interviewed two guys, one defending the game, the other trying to prove why it's too violent.

you know , I hate that they like to blame Violent behaviors of some troubled childrens on Video games when Most of the violent stuff can be found On TV. As a Child I never had any Rules when it came to the things I watched on TV or played on PSone/N64. I grew up with older Brothers and cousins and they were always into that type of stuff to.

I started watching TV-MA South park at the age of 7 when it first came out in 1997.

Watched all Sorts of Gory Horror movies in early 90s.

and I never had any weird behaviors because of that. I grew up pretty good. lol

I plan to do the same with my children in the future. As long as they know it's fiction it'll be cool with me.

Do you play Call of Duty AT ALL? Since when does the game put in cutscenes for the main story? YOUR PLAYING THE STORY! Your character was a spy, the game lead up to that point, it was letting you play the story like everything else. You didnt have to kill anyone, you didnt have to watch the scene, so whats the problem? Why is it ok to "kill" all the other people i nthe game, but because someone wanted to make a big deal about this specific level it becomes a problem? Its lines of code, nothing more, nothing less.

I grew up playing all kinds of games because my mom took the time to teach me "this is right and thats wrong" and "you dont do this outside of video games" why is it no one elses parents can do this? Or is it because the government wants to control every aspect of our lives now?

Fox has been nailed countless times for fabrication and spin. There are unbiased media monitors out there that watch over all outlets and Fox is consistently amongst the worst perpetrators.

Hell, just last week Sean Hannity got burned for using old protest footage to prove how big some anti-health bill protests were. The protests in question were very recent (i.e. in the fall), yet half the footage showed trees in late-summer. Then Fox claimed that there were 20-40000 protestors, yet according to park officials/police there were 10000.

Olbermann is a hack but Fox News is sewer-residue in the honesty department, and this has been proven time and time again. Putting your fingers in your ears and ignoring it doesn't change it.

I'm against state censorship (self imposed censorship is another matter - We wouldn't need state censorship if people were more responsible), but am all for game certification.

Having said that, the UK had a morning television phone-in today where parents openly admitted to buying MW2 (18 certificate here) for their children, thus rendering the certification system useless and giving the 'censor everything' lobby all the reason they need to start bringing down the hammer.

Also, I do have to wonder where the line will be drawn for games like this - What next for MW3? An undercover CIA agent forced to behead a hostage to maintain his cover? Would we say that was 'okay' because it advanced the story? I don't know, and can see both sides of this argument.

The 360, PC, and PS3 all have a parental code to set. So the problem is fixed right there. Anybody with kids @ home should make sure their dish or cable, and game system is lock to rated G. The M rating isn't a "make it all okay" label.

Sometimes a line is crossed... I don't understand why pornography in a game gets is an AO rating, but a bunch of civilians getting gunned down (and honestly, how many people who play this game won't pull the trigger in that level?) get an M rating.

The M rating doesn't work. Either it isn't enforced, or parents buy it for their kids.

I'm not for censorship, but they need to do something much more drastic to make parents aware of how graphic, and sometimes downright evil, in-game content can be.

I can't justify playing certain games myself, because if I get a kick out of slaughtering innocents, or having sex with prostitutes in a game, what does that say about me? I want people to be able to make their own decisions, but something needs to change. Don't blame the media when they hold the game developers responsible, even if they are just doing it for ratings.

A game is released that is violent (with an 18 rating no doubt) and immediately Fox News thinks kids will be 'influenced' by it. If ANY child played MW2 and wanted to become a terrorist because they thought it was 'awesome', that child has some serious issues as it is, never mind that the parents are allowing them to play it anyway.

Besides, from what I've heard, IW took all the precautions as it is. You can choose not to play these levels and it has the big 18 CERTIFICATE on the cover.

Kids are not influenced by computer games. The few that are will be pretty messed up anyway. Just stop it, Fox News.

I've always supported that violence in a game is fine... but there are limits... and the limits should be the same for movies and music. And so far... I've always defended video games... because they've never stepped over that 'understood line' that movies and music stay away from. UNTIL... COD:MW2!

Sorry... but any 'SANE', 'COMMON-SENSE' person... would play the airport level... and feel... "something's wrong with this".

Bottom line... this game is based on you being the good guy. Representing the US! GO AMERICA!!! YEAH!!! LETS GET THE BAD GUYS!!!... ... then there are people out there that will feel... YEAH!!! This hasn't even been done in movies! let alone... give someone the controls to actually play through the scenario!

GTA is different... you can do whatever you want... but the goal is to complete missions.

Bottom line... you can't keep playing the 'movie has violence card'... without seeing whether a movie has actually done "this violence".

We've all seen movies where people were killed, massacred... etc... but it was never by the good guy! that we liked! and that we felt YEAH!! GO AMERICA!!!! GO CIA! ... good job... you're keeping his loyalty!! KILL THEM ALL!!

imagine they made a movie with will smith... and he was the 'good guy'... worked for the government... CIA... and was the hero of the movie... and there was a terrorist that was shooting up the airport... now... imagine will smith has to prove his loyalty and he massacred everyone! ... does that make sense? what if we were talking about something totally different... like RAPE! it's fine to have rape in a game... cause it's in a movie... but what if you were doing the raping as the good guy of the game... to prove your loyalty! ... and if you say "that's worse!"... i'd say... "WORSE THAN KILLING SOMEONE?!"

anyone who still doesn't see why activision screwed up... is messed up.

IMO... Activision screwed things up for other developers... and because of THEM... NOW... more rules should be imposed in examining games before they come out.

First, you should really brush up on your films.

Second, I honestly don't see the big deal with it. Yeah, sure, terrorists are the thing to hate right now and rightfully so. But that doesn't mean this should cause outrage.

I asked a friend who bought this game what its like and when asked about this level he said it was 'ok'. Yes, thats right, its ok because its simply a game.

Really though, you are right, you play the hero of the peice which is why it would be difficult. You need to infiltrate this group of terrorists and gain their trust BY ANY MEANS and your characters does what he has do. Basically he has no other choice. I don't whether or not you can go through without shooting anyone (someone wanna clarify?) but if not, the game gives you no choice because its a game. Pretty much everyone that plays MW2 will never be in the situation of standing with an elite group of terrorists gunning people down in an airport to gain their trust.

If I play the game and do this scene, I'll understand the difficult choice it would be for the character, but I'll also understand it isn't real and its simply pixels on a screen.

i'm fully brushed on my movies... American History X is my favorite movie of all time. A movie that portrays the evils of racism in a really cool way. Totally doesn't apply to my point.

American History X: you follow a guy who gets so racist... does horrible things... then find out that his life has been BS all this time and that he was wrong for doing it.

COD:MW2: you are fighting for the US! doing what you think the US does in real life! ... yes it's just a game... but you are taking down the bad guys!! the terrorists!! and when the airport scene comes... you believe "this is horrible... but it is right". After playing the game... and finishing it... you think... "if I had to do the airport thing again... i would"... or even... it's sad to think that some people would think "this is very accurate to what the US does day to day... protecting our country... and if I had to do it in real life... I would". that's scary to think someone might actually think that.

p.s. you dont have to shoot the men women and children... but you do have to shoot the cops that come after you.

but... my point is... this is a scene... that could have been made very differently... to clearly show... to the player... that if you are an American CIA Agent... that you have to avoid this MASSACRE as much as possible...

American History X shows you the life of a Neo Nazi living in the USA. How he treats and kills people.... he is the main character of the movie. Than he goes to prison and changes his life.

CODMW2 shows you the life of a terrorist doing what they do and than you change into the super hero who saves the world from terrorism.

It's the same basic story. Both of them equally brutal but you have to take it for what it is. One is a video game and one is a movie. At both occasions they wanted to show you the evil side closer and the reason for this is to hate them more. That's all there is to it. When I was playing the airport level in the story mode....troughout the whole level I felt like this is so wrong, I should not be doing this. But it made me hate the bad guys even more.....goal was accomplished.

American History X is not the same... at the end of the movie... you feel... : i guess the main character feels what he did is wrong... would never do it again... and so... i guess it's wrong.

at the end of call of duty... you feel: i guess the main character feels what he did was bad... that he WOULD do it again for the SAME reasons... and ... in addition... maybe leaves you thinking... maybe the government actually does this in real life.

GTA can be more violent... for sure...

but my point is... in GTA... you play a mob-ish low guy... similar to scarface... bully... gangster ish... who has to work his way up the ladder. what makes the game cool... is that it's free-world... and you can do whatever you want! wiked! you can kill people... bang hookers...

in COD:MW2... you can't help but feel you are playing a realistic representation of someone in the government... fighting for their country... AND... BECAUSE THE GAME HAS THIS PLOT!... it's very risky to introduce THE AIPORT SCENE. ... in the training of the game... they deduct points for shooting civillian card boards. GREAT! AS EXPECTED! you are a government weapon to defend the country! that's a great morality thing to have in the game. But... when all's said and done... you can still shoot down innocent people. you can shoot whoever you want... even your own soldiers... whatever!... BUT THIS SCENE makes you feel... the game does not try to punish you for doing things in this scene. ... morally... ... there is 0 moral lesson... you come out of this scene feeling... "hmmmm... i guess this is what the cia does... ... i guess there's nothing wrong with that"....

which many of you have said on this form... which is scary to think there are many people (like some on this form) out there.

Just because they make it look authentic and realistic doesn't mean it is. Its a simple plot.

Seeing your character disguise himself as a terrorist and shoot up an airport made to look 'real' isn't going to make me think "Wow, I bet this happens all the time". There's plenty of military fiction done with such authenticity to appear real because that appeals to many peoples taste.

Its a PLOT for a game, one that could easily have come Tom Clancy.

I watched both videos. The Fox news segment wasn't news. It was an opinion piece. People are allowed to have opinions last time I checked, and my opinion is that the host is a moron and hasn't a clue what he is talking about.
I also loved the Olbermann segment when they listed one of Fox bias' as "Posts specific information, directs viewers to a website with a list of protests." in regard to the tea parties. Agree with the tea party idea or not, how is this a dis-service to people?
I find it interesting that MSNBC had such a laundry list for Fox. I wonder why they didn't post their own mistakes and retractions for comparison. I guess they just make honest mistakes and never show any bias. You know, like the "thrill running up and down" Olbermann's leg when Obama was elected.
