ONM: Call of Duty Modern Warfare: Reflex Review

The whole fuss around the original Modern Warfare arose because it was a punchy depiction of modern, dirty combat and unfortunately, this Wii version with its flat and muddy textures and short draw distances just can't compete. Given the extra two years Treyarch had to squeeze every last drop of polish from the Wii, this is underwhelming visually. It looks okay for a Wii game - that's the dreaded caveat - but it's not even up there with Metroid Prime: Corruption.

Having said that, Modern Warfare is still an excellent shooter packed with options and it should be a big player online so we can welcome it to the Wii family. It's about flamin' time!

...Sorry I had to. It has MW name in it. Thats how most people are going by the logic =P

red2tango5284d ago

ummm it's made by Treyarch...

Elven65284d ago

So what if Treyarch made it? Can't they make good games?

MajestieBeast5284d ago

Well atleast this game wont support craptavision even more.

JsonHenry5284d ago

As far as a Wii shooter goes, my little brother says it is not too shabby. But he also says no one is going to choose the Wii version over the PS3/360/PC versions.

Quadrix5284d ago

Yeah, it's only good if you only own a Wii. Both the Wii and PS3 are better off with exclusives, and don't typically get the greatest versions of multi-platform games.

cmacdonald5284d ago

If you bought the Wii version you didn't buy it for graphics, so no big deal.

It is what it is.

SpoonyRedMage5284d ago

Good to know, seems Treyarch did a good job... I wasn't going to get this game(I've still got the 360 version) but I might pick it up if I see it for a discount price.

I saw a comparison video with the Conduit before. The Conduit wipes the floor with the port on a tech level but it's positively bland and lifeless compared to Modern Warfare.

EvilTwin5284d ago (Edited 5284d ago )

That's what I expected. Conduit was a ground-up offering. This is a port (of a port, really, as the original HD versions couldn't stand up to the PC version, either). Of COURSE a port won't look as good as a game built just for one system. This statement from the review makes no sense:

"Given the extra two years Treyarch had to squeeze every last drop of polish from the Wii, this is underwhelming visually. It looks okay for a Wii game - that's the dreaded caveat - but it's not even up there with Metroid Prime: Corruption."

No, there's no way this game was going to stack up to Corruption. Or Conduit's graphics tech, even.
It's a port utilizing code originally optimized for different and more powerful hardware. Treyarch would have had to rebuild the game from scratch to max out every bit of the Wii's potential.

And since W@W was released in 2008, that means Treyarch had less than a year to port this game, while at the same time shoe-horning a new control scheme in.

I was a relentless tweaker on Conduit, so this game sounds right up my alley. More action, better multiplayer maps and fully customizable controls trump graphics for me.

(Another added bonus is a better art style than Conduit.)

SpoonyRedMage5284d ago

Yer, they did a good job, especially given the time constraints. I think it would be great if they could implement some of the technique's from HVS' engine into their engine though, just for the extra touches.

I think it's funny that The Conduit was criticised by a lot of people for looking like a PS2 game and this is being praised for it's graphics though. I guess if HVS would have kept quiet it would have bene a lot better recieved on that front.

EvilTwin5284d ago (Edited 5284d ago )

You're absolutely right with Conduit...if IGN hadn't hyped that game to high hell, people probably would've been blown away by the tech in it. Instead, they saw a game that didn't look like a 360 launch title and were disappointed. The drab art style didn't help, but the character/enemy models looked great, the guns were fantastic and the shooting effects were very sharp on the Trust/Drudge weapons.

MW has a better art style, the enemy AI looks to be much better and the online maps are superior to what HVS came up with. That said...

http://wii.ign.com/articles...

Not everyone is sold on the controls. I'm not sure how much credence I pay to IGN, since OMN didn't mention any control problems at all, I didn't have any real trouble with W@W's controls, and IGN is pretty fanboyish with Conduit (heck, I own the game and like it, but they pushed it way too far). But now I may wait for another review or two to gauge this one.

Why MW 2019 is still the best looking Call of Duty to date

MW 2019 is five years old at this point and on previous gen hardware, but it is still the best looking Call of Duty game to date.

MW was an excellent videogame. They messed up Spec Ops big time, but aside from this it was a huge step in the right direction initially. Most notably, at launch it seemed to come from a very cohesive creative vision that was felt across gameplay, to story to art style/visual direction. It was also very notably written by prominent ex-Naughty Dog guys that quit almost immediately before release.

That COMPLETELY dissolved through post-launch content and the full pivot to a "cross-mode" narrative that completely obliterated the cohesion in overall story direction. Warzone then "became" the new face of Call of Duty and the franchise completely removed itself from anything remotely creatively "good". It is a pure money machine, so I kinda get why they're doing it....but I personally completely lost interest.

I would love to see Infinity Ward move off CoD and get to make their own product with full control. They clearly have some massive talent in their ranks but it's perverted by Activision's corporate interests.

I really hope we get other activision games on GP soon. My dream would be Scarface but I know the license probably expired

P_Bomb288d ago

Love me some Scarface! I even bought the comics. Yeah, licensing would probably be an impasse.

4Sh0w288d ago

hmmm, coincidence? Either way this is a good sign for gamers after the ABK deal.

porkChop288d ago

I played through Scarface again last year and it still holds up. Such a fun game. I would love for Xbox to get the rights back to remaster Scarface and make a sequel. It sold well and they had plans for Scarface 2, 3, and 4. With how long it takes Rockstar to make games the market is wide open.

TheColbertinator288d ago

That game was so much fun. Expected a cheap GTA clone but it was a good drug empire building game.

shinoff2183288d ago

They didn't just have plans but there's actual gameplay out there for scarface 2

neutralgamer1992288d ago

Seriously man we need games like

True crime
Sleeping dogs
Watch dogs( more like original not legion)
And proper saints row

GTA can’t be the only option we need other games

P_Bomb288d ago

@neutral
Gun was Activision as well. Nice open world Wild West there imo.

neutralgamer1992286d ago

Gun is such a underrated game

None of those games had dedicated servers on console in the first place? Were always player hosted. Did something change?

Rutaprkl287d ago

Older cods like Mw, Mw2 and WaW were way better than Call of Dutys nowadays

GoodGuy09287d ago

Make activision remaster mw2 (2009) multiplayer please xbox.
