PS University: Borderlands Review

PS University writes "The signature theme song for Borderlands continuously claims that "there is no sleep for the wicked," but anybody who has stepped into Pandora will tell you that the good aren't getting much shuteye either. A lot of gamers have a hard time classifying Borderlands due to its expansive formula of gameplay that offers not only a free roam philosophy, but a loot system, leveling system, first-person shooter mechanics, player-Vs-player gameplay and 4-player co-op. While the developers are dubbing the title a RPGFPS, appropriately, Borderlands kind of reminds me of a smash up of all of my favorite things from four to five other games under one roof. Is this something that is a negative? By no means is it a negative, because while Borderlands does borrow from other franchises, it provides a unique experience that those other games can't even begin to think of offering to a gamer from any stand point."

There was one in the pending section, but it only listed a numerical score and so it failed. Never was able to go to the site itself, but they gave it an 8.5

I agree it's release date is in a tough spot being inbetween "Uncharted 2 and Modern Warfare 2." Along with Ratchet & Clank:Acit,Forza 3,Assassins creed 2,Brutal legend, and Evil dead 2....But in the end people will get around to it if it is worthy....

It's a game that I will get sometime in January/Febuary,before Splinter cell conviction and GOW3.....

I'm debating which one I should get Borderlands, MW2, or AC2.
I picked up a filler game during Toys R Us buy 2 get 1 sale and I've got 45 days to exchange it for another game and those 3 are the ones I want.

I hope Borderlands is good though, I'll have to rent it first to check it out.

AC2 is looking really good if you ask me. The only problem with the first one was that it as repetitive... The graphics and the gameplay were really great (climbing mechanism was good as well)... AC2 seems to iron out all the issues 1 had plus add in better graphics and Venice!!!!!!

Even borderlands is looking great... Never really liked Fallout 3 due to it's elephant slow pacing, but this seems as a better version of F3... Also really like the cartoony cell shaded graphics... One thing Fallout 3 failed was in the graphics department... Granted the map was huge, but the graphics really sucked...
Keep an eye out for both and pick the game according to the genre you like more...
Will wait for MW2 to drop in price personally or will buy it used... Just to spite Activision..

ALthough the art style looks great and the shooting mechanics look spot on, I having heard 1 thing about this game's story. I am concerned it won't have a good story as I am a sucker for stories in my games.

Need to see more reviews. If it turns out mediocre, which is possible as this is gearbox, then it's MW2 used, Assassin's Creed 2, Rachet, and Dragon's Age for the rest of this year.

Yeah even though my copy is all paid for and everything, I still would like to see a few more reviews. Personally I think it's going to be an enjoyable game, but there also needs to be some reviews to even out the perspective for everyone else. I guess since the reviews aren't flying in as fast right now it must be a long game :).

There will be a ton of reviews tomorrow. There is supposed to be an internet review embargo up until tomorrow morning. If you go over to gearbox's community forum there is some info on other reviews though.

I am stoked, gamestop called me this morning to say they are doing a midnight release for this game now at my local store. Normally they only do it for huge games like COD, WoW expansions etc. Hopefully that means the game is selling well. Can't wait.

Yeah, what the hell has happened to the good ol' days? Where games were reviewed at least a month ahead.

All this BS of NDA's and embargo's is purely to try and allow mediocre or disappointing games to secure a few more pre-orders. (Not saying Borderland sis mediocre - I'm really looking forward to it).

If a developer/publisher is confident in it's title it should allow it to be reviewed early (lie Naughty Dog did with Uncharted 2).

The gaming press is pretty much useless these days.

from what ive seen so far. i think it looks fantastic. i cant wait. the gamersyde clip was ok but boring. just a very basic walkthough and telling people about the guns. the action looked good but being at the start of the game your not gonna see much. i def am gonna get this.

If this was releasing in an off-month like June or July, it would receive praise and Game of the Year notions in terms of quality of play; however, due to its release schedule, it may get mixed in the gray of other GOTY-worthy candidates. It also doesn’t help that Borderlands is geared more towards the hardcore gamer opposed to the casual player. Those enjoying the aspects of grindings those levels out in co-op or solo mode will enjoy Borderlands for everything it is…those who don’t, should probably rent it first. As for me, I’m a hardcore gamer and feel Borderlands is worth every penny and then some – especially once Zombie Island is released. Bring on the pain!"

Game Rocks go out and buy it at release you will NOT regret it, I get to play a lot of gold games before release because of the people I know in Austin Texas, this game is fantastic, beats Fall Out 3 hands down, esp if you are bitter towards the maker of FO3 for the lack of PS3 support

I'm started to get a little annoyed that people are criticizing Fallout 3 for its pacing. Has anyone ever played a Fallout game before? That's how the series is. To compare Fallout 3 with Borderlands is a mistake. Yeah, they are both based in the post apocalyptic world and are FPS but that doesn't make them the same comparable genre, because I don't feel that they are. Fallout 3 is a RPG first person shooter with exploration and adventure elements. Borderlands is more a first person arcade shooter with RPG elements. I just don't like how the reviewer said in the comments that: "This game is better than Fallout 3. It’s action packed combat makes it much better than Fallout’s slower pace of play.". I enjoyed exploring in Fallout 3, I found the world subversive, but can understand why not everyone else did. It was just one of the things that made the game that much more memorable and enjoyable for me. That being said, I'm pretty friggin' excited for the game and can't wait for more reviews to start popping up.

Gearbox has said a few times in previews that Fallout and Borderlands both approach the mix of RPG and FPS from different angles.

Fallout is an RPG with shooter elements and Borderlands is a FPS with role playing elements. Even though they are straddling the same fence they do it in completely different ways.

I really enjoyed Fallout 3 and I am sure I will like Borderlands but that doesn't mean one is better than the other. It is apples and oranges. It is like saying Mario Kart is better than Burnout Paradise. They are both arcade style driving games but that doesn't make them inter-changable or even comparable. That may not be the best example but you could substitute any two games from the same genre or fusion of genres and do the same thing.

I'm still picking this one up for ps3 even before UC2 if that means anything. been tracking this game for years and now it looks well polished. getting it not only gives you a good game, but you also support developers and publishers taking big risks
