Naughty Dog hopes Uncharted 2 sells 2.5m+ copies

D-Day for the launch of Uncharted 2 is rapidly descending upon us, with PS3 owners worldwide able to get their paws on Naughty Dog's new game in just under a week. Following the release of the multiplayer demo and the first reviews of game, the hype level has hit a feverish pitch. Will all this pre-release excitement convert into sales though? Naughty Dog certainly is banking on it, hoping the game manages to outsell the first game and do more than 2.5 million copies worldwide.

I have no doubt U2 will do very well. 2.5 mil over lifetime is quite reasonable. Even surpassing that.

But what is with people saying what a game "deserves" to sell? Some of the numbers you are spouting are ridiculous. I'll entertain a discussion of deserving review scores, but sales are what they are. You don't deserve sales... you earn them. If this sells 2.5 mil in the first 24 hours, hey good for them. I know a casually-playing hardcore gamer who doesn't hang on every word of the industry. He knows about Halo. He knows about Gears. He has heard of Killzone. He loves him some Clancy.

But he has never heard of Uncharted. That's why this game isn't going to sell 10 million copies, no matter what you think it deserves.

EDIT: Um, guys... I'm seeing that same trend of wishful thinking that KZ2 has leading up to it... and Haze had leading up to that. The same kind of wishful thinking a gambler taking all his life savings to Vegas has. He expects to come home rich on his sure thing and his family will treat him like a hero. The reality of the situation is RARELY that perfect. UC2 will do very well.... better than Haze and KZ2... but some of you need a serious reality check. A single game is never the savior of an entire system.

You seem to be forgetting about the original Xbox. I think there was this little game called Halo.

Seriously, without Halo the Xbox would have been screwed. They had no other game that can really be considered a system seller other than Halo. Although I do somewhat agree with your statement. Mainly because Xbox platforms are the only consoles that are dependant on a small selection of 'great' games (Gears of War, Halo). I mean hell, even Nintendo has, their 3d Mario Platformer, Metroid games, Zeldas, Super Smash Bros, and then occasionally a great third party exclusive (or at least timed).

For instance, Gamecube had RE4 and Eternal Darkness (both of which were better than any Xbox exclusive IMO). And we all know Sony has always been about a quantity of quality games. GTA, MGS, GT, GoW, FF, KH, ICO, SotC, Zone of the Enders, and probably hundreds of more quality games. The PS3 is following the same path. with Resistance 1&2, MGS4, GT5, GoW3, KZ2, LBP, Uncharted 1&2, Demon's Souls, WKC, VC, R&C, Warhawk.

Killzone's talk was even louder than it has been for U2 and we all know Sony can't have been over joyed at that games sales so ND, while I think they should reach this goal with ease enough, are wise to be looking more realistically. The PS3 demographic can be hard to pin down. We've gone from people insisting PS3 owners don't buy games supported by lacklustre(in comparison to the likes of Halo and Gears, mind, so it's a little daft to start with considering most 360s were bought FOR Halo at one time)first party sales to PS3 outselling 360 versions of multiplats like SF4, RE5 and the like-so I can diog why ND might be cagey about their chances.

Personally I imagine, with a decent push from Sony, they could get just below MGS4 figures(just under 4million-say about 3.5 worldwide after 6 months)and from what I've played of the MP betas and demo and seen of the campaign they would appear to deserve that recognition as well.

The original did numbers on the strength of it Sony giving it away. Uncharted 2 will do Killzone numbers early but at the end of the day it will exceed 2.5 and end up near 3 million before it starts to trickle along.

Other than the internet I just don't see Sony creating any demand for it. In comparison, Killzone 2 had a bigger buzz, going into it's release date.

But, who knows? Maybe the early multiplayer demo, E3 showing, and just sheer fans of the original will push this game beyond any release for the system in a long time. Sranger things have happened.

The first one did 2.5 million in 2 years. This one will do it in one month. The hype train and buzz is out and about with beta testing going through the roof. People who slept on the last one will pick this one up, because they starving for a AAA title. Hopefully PS3 ONLY users support this better than they did KillZone 2. You already see how 360 ONLY users support Halo no matter what. Even Adam Sessler said this is absolutely one of the best games he's played in recent years. His PRO for the game was "EVERYTHING" and his CON for the game was "IT ENDED." He never wanted it to end, so he was let down by that. That sounds like a game worth a midnight release just as Halo and Madden have gotten. This will sell PS3's for sure especially with parents wanting to know what games to buy for the holiday season.

Yeah I own an xbox and I have no clue what this guy is talking about. I can admit that although I own both consoles and prefer the Ps3 because I've been gaming on Sony consoles for a long time, the xbox has a lot of good games also. But some of the stuff MGR says is beyond retarded! I've played geow 1 and 2, Halo 3, Fable 2, Dead Rising, Topspin 2 on the xbox already, and so far I have seen nothing that even comes close to what the Ps3 has been doing in the graphics and physics department. I don't even think Geows and Halo 3 deserved the score it got. I loved ME1 and am loving Fable 2 right now though. Dead Rising is good game but graphics suck and the save system blows!

I thought UC1 was one of the best games ever and I'm sure UC2 will be better. That's how I define success (quality). BUT some people define success by sales. Naughty Dog - and other developers not named SE, Sony 1st Party, etc. - should pick a sales number and say "If we beat 2.5M in global sales by the holidays, everyone gets free DLC". Whether its maps or new guns or behind the scenes vids, that would be cool and encourage WoM (word of mouth) advertising. Thoughts?

It has been proven by many titles such as Batman:Asylum Halo,Gears,GT,Zelda,MGS series,Mario, Mass Effect, Forza, Modern Warfare and so will UC 2. Word of mouth just spreads like wildfire when a really good game comes out. Hopefully the SDF is more than talk this time and actually makes purchases of this game because ND is another developer who deserves all the credit but i bet they will like to be rewarded by selling AT LEAST 2.5 mill copies. I plan on getting this..day one! There is no reason why this wont be the highest selling title on the PS3..until God of War 3 and GT5 come out. I will say....3-4.5 million is about right. Not a Halo killer, but a PS3 seller, Uncharted 2 will be.

Uncharted 2 will not come close to 5 million. It just will not get that kind of penetration into the market. The highest selling game on the PS3 will hands down be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. People forget the original Uncharted was bundled into PS3 onsoles. But it safe to say that it should easily make it's way past a million in the next two months with two million+ coming out of 09.

Halo is a tried and proven game and it's got the sales to back it up whether you like it or not. So why don't you just purchase UC 2 because im sure it will be a great game and because you MIGHT ACTUALLY ENJOY PLAYING IT instead of only buying it to try and beat out another game on a different console. The problem is that once again Sony isn't being aggressive with their ad campaign. The point; however, is that it probably won't sell like one due to whatever circumstances. It just peeves people off to see high grade quality not rewarded. Certain games will always outdo others in sales due to established reputations set by original franchises. Halo 1 was great for it's time, there is no denying that. When we got to the point of three though, the general view was it didn't deserve the hype or success it was credited for. Of course that's my biased opinion that just so happens to be shared with a vast percentage of gamers, but hey, we all can attest that the name Halo will continue to sell the games regardless of the quality. Lots of games that are great don't sell as well they probably could, but in the case of Uncharted 2, it is such an obvious case of polish and that is why people are voicing their opinions so much. There's no reason why this game shouldn't atleast sell to likes of Gears of War. The cheap cheap has got to stop! Ps3 owners have to got to start supporting their platform!
