Dear Games Industry, We Need More Games Like Halo 3: ODST

I don't know what your expectations were for Halo 3 ODST, but I wasn't expecting much. Bungie seems to have been playing down the significance of its latest entry in the Halo series, following year-long back-and-forth contradictions about what exactly Halo 3 ODST even is. Such issues didn't inspire much confidence, but it's a new Halo game, right? Of course I'm going to play it.

But while I'm sure to have any number of memorable gaming experiences before this year is up, I'm convinced Halo 3 ODST will stick with me. Halo 3 ODST is important. It's a game worth putting on a pedestal, pointing to the rest of the industry and demanding many more games like this.

Do you play all of your games on easy? You can beat it in four hours on easy.
Playing ODST on Heroic or legendary makes the game 8-14 hours for the campaign. Bungie makes it very clear that Halo is meant to be played on Heroic. In fact, when you select Heroic it says 'this is how Halo is meant to be played'

The firefight mode has tremendous replay value. In fact I want to see some one clear all of the levels with 4 players on Legendary.

So Lair for 60.00 is worth because..of the graphics? And the controls so broken a patch was made. BTW I own Lair.

I DO understand your argument...and for YOU it makes pure sense. You are obviously a fan of HALO and so ODST is a natural progression. But, there are some who just believe that regardless of the franchise...it is not worth the purchase at full price. However,the true problem that I have is with your second point of contention. You have compared 2 launch titles for the PS3 to a game that is a side-story to one of the biggest franchises of all times. If you look back at MOST system launches...most people can't find more than one or two games that they would've paid full price for in retrospect. That's why devs rush to get in on system launches...they can pass just about ANYTHING over on the gamers...before the REAL quality shows.

That being said most of the opinions here are from people that have not or will not play the game. It is as if you guys read an article, or heard on a ps3 forum, or from a friend of a friend that ODST was a waste of money or overrated. Yet none of you have any substantial first hand experience with game.

I can list title after title that is just as short or has less content or has poor gameplay (which can not be said about any of the Halo games) that cost 60.00. Yet ODST is singled out. Sorry, but firefight is the best of the "Horde" type game modes out there. For a smaller campaign and firefight it was worth it.

I read the article and I think what author is getting as is that we need more games that are similar to what the author thinks Halo 3 ODST offers of which he states in this part of his article:

"Rather than spitting out a series of deleted scenes with Master Chief, Bungie produced a noir-inspired detective tale with a gameplay style both iterating on past experiences and simultaneously trying something completely different."

The thing is I don't know if the gameplay is actually much more different than previous ones. I remember in the GT review, they stated health doesn't regenerate and your not super or something. I've never played a Halo past 2 and never played to much into the first one so I don't know. Either way I think what the article should have been first and foremost is: "Game developers should take risks." As it seems to be what he's really trying to imply and they have to have realistic ambitions as to what they want to add to a game and not pushing it back I suppose..

Obviously, the $60 price tag was just fine for him and may be way too much for others. I can count 100s of games that I paid 60 dollars for that were not worth it. I willing to guess that ODST is better than most of those turds I paid for.

Personally, I'm not a big fan Halo series- its just not my type of game. It seems most of the enjoyment players get out of it is because they are playing with their friends. Cost was never brought up in the article because that's not what he was talking about. You could never find a game made in a year that was on par with ODST. That's quality work on a limited dev cycle and I don't care if they're using a slightly tweaked older engine or not. It's impressive what that small group of guys did in a short amount of time. That's what the article was about. You don't have to hunker down for a 3-5 year dev cycle for a great game. And that small dev cycle doesn't have to churn out some poor XBLA game.

To be honest most did not read the article, but rather jumped in (hehe jumped in), read the headline, maybe a few lines of the paragraph and commenced to replying to it. Even though many people think differently, I think Resistance 2 was better than the first one. Insomniac added a new campaign, 60 player competitive mode (even if it is a bit hectic at times),and eight player co-op. I think that is amazing for a years work.

Edit: Hmmm idk if it was exactly a year but I can see them really starting on it a few months before Tools of Destruction was put out in Oct. 07 and they probably finished Res 2 like in sept or something. I would say 1 year and 3 to 4 months. But whatever.

I love Insomniac but just because they release a game every year doesn't mean the dev cycle was only a year. The article is talking about great games that have a defined scope being made in a limited amount of time. Not everything has to be a huge 3-5 year blockbuster or a small download-able game. Games that clearly know what they are and are well defined from the get-go can be made in a short amount of time and still be great games.

And my gripe is not about differing opinions. I love a good debate and you need differing opinions for that. It's about people commenting with obviously no idea of what the article is talking about. People just commenting saying, "no we don't need more 60 dollar DLC" are missing the point of the article. Legit claims against the article are fine, but the rage comments about Halo contribute nothing to the discussion and are clearly out of place when it comes to this actual article.

I have played all the Halo games and own Halo 1 through 3, In my opinion Halo Wars was a waste, its just a dumb down RTS. Halo ODST is not worth $60.00 for a short single player campaign(around 4 hrs long) one new online mode, map packs that have been out for a while now and the opportunity to play the Halo Reach beta.

The fact that it was done in a year is not a good thing, they made less than half a game in that time with a engene that was already built and not improved upon and are charging $60.00 dollars for it. It's nothing to brag about nor is it something we should want from developers in the future.

I dont know what rank you are in Halo 3, but the intensity of the higher ranked games can wear on you. Firefight makes it fun again.

FYI, capslocking every other word just looks terrible. Also, Bungie always does right by their fans, and honestly, ODST iss a pretty awesome experience. I realize not everyone loves Halo gameplay, or the story, blahblahblah, but I like it. It's simple, fun, and ODST gives a fresh look on the halo universe. Plus, being weak-er and facing the Convenant is hella exciting.

I mean, yeah, Uncharted 2 is a good value, obviously. But with ODST, the Halo Reach beta is enough for most people, and Bungie could have sold literally anything to peeps, but they put effort into this game. I'm pretty satisfied.

I mean, for me personally, it's actually a good value. I'll be playing it for quite a while, and returning to it quite a bit. I just don't get bored of games. Prolly one of the reasons why I just don't get why a lot of people don't think L4D is a good value.

That's rather unlikely. What is with every PS3 fanboy running to Uncharted 2 these last couple of months? Modern Warfare 2 is a great multiplat example. IW took requests from the public and created a great new single player experience, re-built the multiplayer from day 1; adding tons and tons of new content, and adding the special ops co-op mode. Everytime something looks good for the 360 the same people on this site downplay it and bring up Uncharted 2. Yes, Uncharted 2 looks amazing, but unfortunately I see it hitting the shadows and not getting the attention it should get when Modern Warfare 2 comes out. I think a lot of PS3 fans are worried about that and that is why they keep bringing up Uncharted 2. This is a Halo article about Halo. It's not comparing Halo to any game, let alone a PS3 exclusive.

A serious question and I want only a truthful response; If you hate this game and don't like it, why are you coming to the Halo articles? Seriously, why?

I just wanted to point out that this Halo article is comparing this Halo game to other games and suggesting that more of them should be more like it, so it's perfectly legitimate to refute the article by pointing out the value that other games provide and citing that as a reason why, in fact, fewer games should be like Halo. My problem with this whole debate though is that Halo 3 ODST is not a game, it is an expansion to a game bundled with other expansions. When comparing it's cost to that of purchasing a whole series of expansions, it's somewhat reasonable, though I personally think it was over priced because I think all expansions are over priced. That said, the price will drop eventually, so who cares. But it's really just not fair to compare ODST to other games or to compare other games to ODST, rather, you should only compare Halo 3 as a complete package to other games, and then you can debate about the value of it compared with what other games offer. Still, this whole debate over value is idiotic, there are countless games that are released at full price and are bad, that doesn't mean that they shouldn't have been released at full price, that just means they were bad, and once people found out, they weren't willing to pay. ODST is nothing like that, first because it isn't bad, and secondly because people are still clearly willing to pay. In any event, I cannot agree with this article because I don't think games should be more like one another, rather, games should be more different from one another. I don't want multiple versions of the same thing, I want distinct experiences, and that is why this article is fundamentally flawed.

And to answer your question as to why people come to articles about a game that they don't like, it's clearly because they want to express their difference of opinion with that expressed by the article, it's the same reason why you responded to a comment with which you disagree and why I responded to you.

But it is one thing to disagree on the article, it's another thing to come to the article, not read it, and just smash it because it has the word "halo" in it. The great thing about America is our freedom of choice. If one earns their money, they should spend it however they desire. If one person thinks it's worth their money, than it is for that person. Almost every episode is like a Halo advertisement. So no surprise this type of article would come from them. If KZ3 were to come out with basically a shorter campaign with horde mode and 3 new maps for KZ2 not 3 with no maps specifically for KZ3 all while asking a full $60 would garner rightfully so complaints. Halo ODST may be a great game but the cost of the game is not justified. Maybe if they had ODST multiplayer specific maps and game-play. I find that pricing is an issue that should be watched closely in the future, especially since some Pubs may try to get away with less content while charging full prices.

I think the reason people feel cheated when it comes to odst, is because bungie usually packs in a whole lot of content. It appears that it was there intent to have this be a 30-40 dollar add on but microsoft thought otherwise. I played through the game and some firefight and the fact that there is no matchmaking in ff was a huge letdown. The campaign was great i can only imagine how much fun it would have been if they would have made a competetive version of this game definately would have been a hardcore experience imo.

Sh*t Halo 3 provided a more engaing and memorable gaming experience for me than this weak overpriced exspansion pack with an uninspired firefight mode, and I hate the halo series. There are more way better games that are coming out that should provide a much more memorable gaming experience, Brutal Legend, Rage, Dragon Age, Mass Effect 2, Borderlands, and Uncharted 2. I won't label Call of Duty only because, while they're good. I'm sorry to say, each COD is only marginal improvement from that last (mostly, treyarch screwed up COD3). While not a bad thing, but like the Halo series, they don't really deviate from the basic formula, and games themselves in multiplayer are not the far apart from each other. I'm just saying that you're using some hypothetical scenario that doesn't work well with your argument. The Wii Fit argument, as annoying as it is, makes more sense. That is clearly not a game that is better than anything on the market and it sold better than anything out there.

I hate Halo, but there's nothing I hate more than blind ignorance. Most of the people ranting about this haven't even played the game and they never will because they're too busy riding the Sony train to experience something beyond the boundries of the gaming bubble they live in.

With the exception of Heavy Rain, God of War III and Uncharted 2, all of the most hyped and most promising titles will also be on the 360, and then some. Good thing I have both systems, I guess.

And what's with this whole "ODST is an expantion" nonsense? By itself, it might seem like it, but compare it to other $60 games... Nobody would've been dumb enough to skip all the cutscenes on his first playthrough just to beat it in four hours. I beat Halo ODST on hard in 5 hours on my first and only playthrough. (which is sad cause the open-world padded the playtime an extra hour, so it's really only a 4 hour playthrough.) I didn't pay for it and I still don't think the experience is all that great. The game isn't worth 60 bucks, period, regardless of whether or not you liked it it's an overpriced experience.

The first time I played MGS4, it took me around 20 hours to complete. I actually wanted to enjoy the game. The fifth time I played it, I rushed through, avoiding enemies and skipping cutscenes to get Boss Extreme. It still took me nearly 5 hours (official game time) and at least twice as much total playing time (including retries and such).
