Modern Warfare 2 Might Cause Stir With Americans?

In the recently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Trailer it showed Washington DC being attacked by the opposing forces. It showed places like The Washington Monument and The White House being almost completely destroyed and the whole area just a huge battleground.

Where were the complaints when the White House was obliterated by a laser in the movie Independence Day? I was around back then and there weren't any. The media feels the need to trash video games as if the end of man kind will be due to a virtual date in GTA IV.

I can see the 'analysts' now: "Watching the US be harmed will ruin our children and make them think terrorism is OK and they'll all become suicide bombers!". It'll be the same people who were crazy over children playing GTA, even though GTA is for 17 and up. It's the parents fault for exposing their kids to mature content -- not Rockstar's, but the media always finds someone to blame.

I'm sure the news outlets will attack MW2 for this since news outlets rarely cover real news these day; I turned on CNN recently and Anderson Cooper was on spouting some gossip about Britney Spears. I seriously doubt it, most of the well known countries and their monuments have been destroyed in plenty of games and in movies. Resistance pretty much blew up whole US and whole europe for that matter, WW2 games have been destroying age old German monuments for many years.

In fact I might actually think Americans are the most accepting when it comes to this. They make movies about these kinds of things and big budget ones as well. Maybe not terrorism based but still.

The media loves to attack video games since they're popular with the young crowd and parents are concerned so it brings in eyeballs. Sadly, TV is all about ratings and websites are all about hits even when it's news. That's why CNN has started covering celebrity gossip -- it's so popular. Popular = Viewers which in return and the more viewers, the more ratings/hits.

The world we live in, for the most part, isn't about credibility anymore, it's about personal gain even if it's somewhat unethical.

Another example is all the lame game sites and blogs on N4G that post flame bait articles and whack reviews to gain hits at the cost of credibility. Who needs credibility when you're making money? As long this trend continues, credibility will become more and more scarce.

I don't know how many of you are UFC fans, but the UFC has this series called "The Ultimate Fighter" where they have prospect fighters compete to earn a spot in the UFC. Well, on this season of "The Ultimate Fighter" they have the ultra popular street fighter Kimbo Slice on the show even though he's an awful REAL fighter. Why? Because he has a huge following and in turn has brought the show record ratings numbers. The UFC knew he wasn't a quality fighter but still had him compete on the show just for the ratings boost. This is yet another example of a media outlet sacrificing credibility for personal gain.

Honestly, that whole thing makes me sick; it's something that makes me say to myself "Man, I really hate our society". That's why I'm moving to Japan in a few years where I'll be an English teacher :D I'm almost done learning advanced Japanese and then I just have to arrange everything before I move :)

Fighting on American soil in this style of game is rare.
I remember PS2 Freedom Fighters being set in NY, but can't remember others.

I believe this could really add to the game, however a huge attack on America to start the "Games War" could cross boundaries.
We all know the event that triggered huge emotions and I don't know how distastful it could be to;

A - recreate that type of feeling to start the game
B - Do something that is actually worse than what has been done in history

Edit: It seems from the trailer that an terrorist attack takes place in a eastern (possibly russian) airport. The fighting around DC seems to have been going on for awhile, maybe pointing to a larger conflict on american soil?

The overall feel is like in Cod4 though, with some more serious undertones about the futility of war. And that may be their saving grace...

There's at least 1 movie a year with a terrorist attack on Washington, DC. Fallout 3 just showed DC after the apocalypse. I was wondering when Rainbow Six was going to leave Vegas and do another major locale like DC, NY, or LA. It's a game. I live in DC and it's good to see your city represented in a video game. In this case, I am trying to defend it and I find it amazing to see those landmarks fully represented and true to form. How quickly we forget about 9/11. I bet you thought then, that the Pentagon would never get hit. The truth is it could happen. I don't see a problem with what the game portrays actual it's a good twist of events. The way it happens is with people like you who become complacent and think to them selves it will never happen to us. MW2 is going to be epic. I can't remember the last game that had some terrorist bringing it to our soil (Capitol). After seeing this trailer, I for one can't wait to go hand it to some terrorist on our soil.

i kinda liked it in halo when the fight was on earth, and for the same reason I'll probably like it that MW2 is bringing the fight home to the US...

I was in the Marine Corps for a couple of years and having a situation where the white House is at risk of being destroyed is a good setting to get me involved in the game...not to the point of it being uncomfortable because it is after all just a game, but definitely giving me the feeling that I'm fighting for something important.

i can understand people who suffered 911 to feel a little emotional at most, but i don't think its wrong to put that kind of setting in the game, to be honest, i think Americans should appreciate it more that our landmarks and monuments are being used.

The Reason why I said it cause there is one scene in the trailer where the USS Kennedy crash down on the White House during a Tsunami destroying all of our nation's capital in the process.
