Natal, the final hope for Microsoft in Japan?

VGarabia.com: with all of the changes in this ever evolving industry and the attempts to bring more consumers to game, will project Natal be the magical solution for Microsoft in Japan?

MS's attempt to lure JP gamers with JRPGs has clearly backfired.

And though it would probably be popular with full blown otakus, a milo type dating sim would likely come back on them too. Especially if you could strip and touch the character, who'd likely be a top-heavy waitress or bar girl.

Darkeyes5322d ago (Edited 5322d ago )

The ONLY WAY M$ can turn it's fortune in Japan is by an exclusive FF... Not any crap JRPG, but FF.... But we know thats not happening.... So lights out for 360 in Japan soon.... 15K-20K a month when competition sells 100K-150K is embarrassing to say the least. Maybe next gen M$.... Just maybe...

And I hope M$ isn't betting everything on Natal to pull the 360 for another 3-4 years... Cause frankly if it blows, then it's gonna be a rundown by competition... Already at 199$... not many price drops left to be the saving grace.

Kushan5322d ago

All those JRPGs were absolute crap, with Mystwalker's titles being the only real exceptions, its no wonder they didn't set Japan on fire.

The-Warranty5322d ago

Natal vs Final Fantasy 13

yeah........................

gaffyh5322d ago

I thought Star Ocean 4 was the Last Hope? Lol j/k.

@1.1 - I said almost the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago. They need an EXCLUSIVE, NUMBERED FF. No spin off or crap like that.

GameGambits5321d ago

They could just hire some first party JRPG developers from Japan to make them some JRPGs that won't be on PS3 a few months later with extra goodies.

Microsoft this console generation needed to do two things. 1) Fix RROD issue. 2) Open up a lot of first party studios to compete with Sony. It was only a matter of time till Sony started to do what they do every console generation and flood the market with tons of titles you can't get anywhere else. I have no clue what Microsoft were planning or if they just wanted to ride out a few years to turn a quick buck.

Natal will not do squat to help them in Japan. They need first party studios...that's all they can really do to try and get some share in that market over there.

Godmars2905321d ago (Edited 5321d ago )

What MW game other than Lost Odyssey has gotten any recognition? And even then it wasn't anything "next gen" that showed off what the 360 could do beyond a PS2 title aside from looking better.

Worse still for MS, games like Vesperia and SO4, the PS3 ports, have shown limitations in the 360 should there be any evolution in JRPGs.

Edit:
Oh wait: Blue Dragon. yeah, that really helped them...[/s]

@zlatko:
Mistwalker, which was headed by a former key Square dev when Square was Square, has already been brought up. You can't get any more high profile than that.

Blaze9295321d ago

well obviously nothing will ever be the magical solution for Microsoft in Japan. They just wont magically takeover the region or do good in it this gen out of no where. What they are doing though is making progress and what great progress it is compared to the Xbox 1. For them this is a progress that will unfortunately have to happen slowly over time. Gotta see what will happen for them next-gen unless they still got some cats in the bag for the remaining life span of the xbox 360.

jcgamer5321d ago

Third party publishers have already started talking about certain games that will support BOTH PS3 Wand control and Natal....meaning Natal will be getting little, if any special treatment from third party in its first year...Sony and Nintendo aren't breaking a sweat about Halo: Reach...i'll TELL you why...because Sony and Nintendo already have "hardcore" motion control games in development! HELLO...lol...remember that rumor about another new first party FPS being developed by Sony? as soon as i heard it, i thought, "an immersive FPS using PS3 Wand control. " Metal Gear: Rising? oh, you bet my money is on that it's a Metal Gear game supporting BOTH PS3 Wand control and Natal control...Sony took Nintendo's already lucrative business model and expanded it to where Nintendo is going next - hardcore motion control games in HD,,,Sony made for damn sure that Natal would launch all by itself in Fall 2010, accompanied by a SH!T storm of great AAA PS3 exclusive games, and games including PS3 Wand support...

lol :)

kws10655321d ago

Failed miserably and now porting to PS3

Reibooi5321d ago

If the eye toy didn't set Japan on fire then Natal will bomb doubly so because it's coming from MS and Japan is far more loyal to Sony and Nintendo which is largely a reason MS has had trouble getting off the ground in Japan.

I'm still largely of the mind set that Natal is a joke and that all it really is is MS figuring out that they cannot compete with the PS3 on a sheer power or Graphics level and then saying lets turn the 360 into a Wii clone. Granted it doesn't have a controller like the Wii but the whole causal gaming market idea is more what I'm getting at not at the control method. Personally I don't think there will ever be a Natal Killer app and it's just gonna be like eye toy. A ton of hype with nothing that ever really matters.

Sarcasm5321d ago

What MS needs to do to win Japan is BUY NINTENDO.

It will win everywhere else too.

Other than that, they might as well stop bothering with Japan and focus on other regions.

jden285321d ago

I don't know where some of you learned to do math but a 246% increase in sales isn't a little improvement its a lot in any business. Which obviously didn't backfire. There supposed strategy shift to natal is a reaction to the japanese developers being excited about it. When a great japanese developer such as hideo who clearly prefers to develop for Sony looks at your natal and says I can do things with this that can't be done anywhere else it means 3 things;

1. We haven't seen it and it can obviously do way more than we know, i.e not an eye toy clone, so that ends that.

2. Who develops the best games? Great developers that are excited about what there doing thats who. i.e. hideo is very excited and a great developer

3. Give him what he wants and needs to make the dang game... and that is exactly what M$ is doing wait until next E3 and TGS when they blow your socks off.

Let me paint a picture of a natal enhanced jrpg or action game.
Facial recognition starts your avatar and welcomes you back to another play session with an ominous voice... head tracking moves the in game camera view to do a close up of treasure you're searching for, voice recognition allows you to have an actual conversation with a character without text bubbles or worrying about if your character will sound like mickey mouse...it's your voice....body tracking moves the sound around your surround sound to match where your at in the game to the events on screen.... hand gestures allow you to silently communicate with your friend who's playing coop with you and sneak up on a castle guard and take him out....voice support...allows yelling out commands in the heat of battle...for greater control of AI party.

Imagine the immersion that can be had with natal and I believe that is what has all those japanese developers so excited.

You all are right about a couple things though the list of jrpgs that M$ had wasn't all good(infinite undiscovery) but its a start and something I for one believe will only get better...

Also on with the math again M$ has consistently sold 15-25k per month Sony has CONSISTENTLY sold 45-75k per month and nintendo 60-120k per month but they've been on a decline most of the year.

Microsoft Xbox 3605320d ago (Edited 5320d ago )

If they can't make a good JRPG with a standard controller what makes you think they can do any better with Natal?

"sneak up on a castle guard and take him out"

That won't ever happen in front of your TV. LOL.

"And though it would probably be popular with full blown otakus, a milo type dating sim would likely come back on them too. Especially if you could strip and touch the character, who'd likely be a top-heavy waitress or bar girl."

looooool. But there is a better idea how about Microsoft monkey? something similar to nintendo dog on the DS or seaman on the Dreamcast.

Godmars2905322d ago

Sony's already beat them there with the eyepet. Its monkey-ish.

Aquarius5322d ago (Edited 5322d ago )

NATAL is too far away to make any differences for the 360 in Japan now.

In 3 months FFXIII Bundle will be released and thats all the japs will care about. They need their FF/JRPG Fix.
NATAL is a year away too, unless it releases right next to SONY's and it still won't make an impact in Japan. It's time is up...<

M$ needs to put in more research into this technology. They just bought out the company a year ago. What have they done, since E3? The camera hasn't changed look and its still horribly un-responsive(laggy), did you forget?

EDIT: @above immortal84, nintendogs is more popular in the UK/Europe.
Is that what japanese like, pet games?

At least with the EYE. There will be at least three control types.

You
The Wands
The Dualshock

NATAL is limited and will put a lot of stress on developers.
M$ has barely pushed this industry/geneartion foward and NATAL looks like its backward. You need buttons to play/touch games.

The DS has buttons and touch.
The Wii is basically an enhanced DS with the touch now transformed into motion.

NATAL=THIN AIR
...and any chances of using a controller with it is ruined, with SONY's patent.

Foxgod5322d ago (Edited 5322d ago )

Haha, i am pointing at a sad Loser!

Really, everything has a learning curve, including everything revolutionizing, it will get easier over time.

*keeps up pointing at sad loser*

And how come you know that Natal is limited, its actually unlimited since theres an unlimited amount of motions you can come up with, and you can scan in all kinds of objects.

*still pointing at sad loser*

Godmars2905321d ago (Edited 5321d ago )

And you know this specifically HOW as you point to someone else and call them a loser?

How about accepting the fact, that like him, you know jack about Natal. Like him, need to wait and see before you point and call names.

And while you're at that, stop pointing at the damn mirror.

Reibooi5321d ago

There is one thing about Natal that is fact and a big negative and that is that you have no real feedback.

Take if you will the example of playing a FPS with Natal. Now you will basically be pointing your figure at the screen and moving your finger to shoot. Now doing that will feel stupid, look stupid and have no feeling of feedback like pulling the trigger or recoil or anything along those lines.

A similar issue is brought up for nearly every game concept you can think of with Natal(any Real one anyway) Driving with a invisible steering wheel, fighting with a invisible sword and so on and so forth.

With stuff like Sony's method you will have the innovation and freedom as well as the feedback.

However for the record let me state that I don't like either method. Natal or Sony motion. I will always prefer the classic controller to this stupid "innovation"

kaveti66165321d ago

Is the word "Jap" appropriate?

Sarcasm5321d ago

"Is the word "Jap" appropriate? "

No it's not.

Most kids these days don't know it's the same as calling a black guy a "N" bomb.

badz1495321d ago

glad that someone has noticed this!

back to the topic, @foxgod, "scanning random objects using a camera connected to a game console for gameplay purpose" is already patented by Sony!

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 5321d ago
hardcore19125322d ago

you are wrong. Natal could shift more Xbox 360 consoles in Japan, the Japanese gamers are becoming more casual. They don't care about JRPGs as before expect for high profile RPGs such as FF and DQ games.

Aquarius5322d ago (Edited 5322d ago )

What if M$ announces a Xbox 3? M$ did classed NATAL as a new console launch. Or they can juggle the 360 and 720NATALCASUAL together like SONY is currently doing with the three PS' on the market.

But I can't see that happening since they will be losing too much money which I won't list why.

P.s. I'm glad SONY patented it. SONY had motion before Wii or Xbox on PS2 but the public obviously wasn't ready. At least we can at least get some good games out of SONY's because the public is thinking NATAL did it first and that is wrong. All it is, is HYPE (with no esscence behind it).

EDIT: @bigpappy. I'm going to let someone else OWN you. I thought I put my point across the best way I could :[

Bigpappy5322d ago

The camera hasn't changed look and its still horribly un-responsive(laggy), did you forget?
Do you guys just make this up or do you have a link. To take the slight delay and post is as horrible un-responsive, is like calling a 2 foot waive a tsunami. You don't have to be a straight up liar to make your point do you? I have be paying close attention to comments of the people who actually had hands on with Natal. Not one of the hands-on's said anything about being unresponsive. I have played tennis games with a controller where the time you hit at the ball and the time it actually get there is a bit off. But, you get use to it if the delay is not too long. Most people who played where able to make the adjustment. Keep in mind that what they have shown so far are also tech demos. The Wii mote is not near perfect in this area, yet millions enjoy that.

Kinect Technical Specifications & Xbox 360 Requirements Revealed

The most notable reveal would perhaps by the requirements of the Xbox 360 console itself. While Microsoft has insisted since the original unveiling of Kinect at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 2009, then known as Project NATAL, that the device would be compatible with all Xbox 360 consoles, the revelation of a dedicated port included on the newly redesigned Xbox 360 model has sparked rumours of incompatibility, which were quickly debunked.

odd, i was led to believe it lacked an internal processor and so also needed a core to itself, if not 1-2 processing threads.

Wikkid6665053d ago

The article says nothing about whether the processor is internal or it uses the 360s.

darthv725052d ago

Also, the notion of a dedicated port really lends nothing to the idea of older units being incompatible. I believe the kinect port is a custom usb port (think the original xbox controller ports) but one that will feed power and data.

Older models will require a splitter that will run off a single usb port (prob the back one) that will work for the data but not the power. That is why they keep saying it will have an external power for those systems.

As for the processor, combo of both makes sense. Using 360 cpu/gpu power to help calculate the finished product on screen along with the cpu in the kinect.

Remember people...this is not a cheap usb web cam (like the original live vision).

Inside_out5053d ago (Edited 5053d ago )

They say they are using 10-15% of one 360 P4 cores. I know that the Kinect we see today is a watered down version of the patented tech they bought and own. Maybe one day the " real " tech will be cost effective. It still is very impressive tech even without a super computer running it.

wicked5053d ago

No, the previous artical said they removed a processor, but I would guess that it had more than 1 to start with. So it will have some form of processor still within it. Arm9 or Cortex M3, all dirt cheap now but powerful.

IdleLeeSiuLung5053d ago

Does it matter? They showed Forza Kinect that looked amazing working with Kinect real time!

callahan095053d ago

Are you just talking about how the graphics are able to look amazing while working with Kinect? If that's what you're talking about, ok. The game itself, though, well... I think I'll stick with the real Forza, with an Xbox 360 control pad. The limited-control Kinect Forza they showed doesn't look like it's worth any attention, in my opinion. Why would anyone want to control a car like that, with hands held out and holding onto nothing, with no control over acceleration or braking? Just seems totally pointless to me.

CrawFail5053d ago

lol real time? I don't quite think it was real time.

Bigpappy5052d ago

You guy know that the motion tech is from prime sense right? Please go to their web site primesense.com,and have a look at what they say the tech can do. It can read fingers well enough to type with each finger and can be used while sitting. No one ever said it has to scan the entire body to work. What we have seen from kinect so far is not all it is capable of.

Reading these specs and trying to compare them to PSeye is pointless, because they are different types of cameras and provide completely differnt types of info to the consoles (Kinect is a 3D camera and provides 3D images. PSeye is a 2D camera and provides 2D images). Per Primsense, the camera is capable of providing video at 60fps, but the 3D is 30fps. The specs for 2 players active is for full body scans. There are no specs given for people sitting and just using their hands.

This tech is obviously a work in progress and has yet to be fleshed out. I suggest all you N4G Kinect experts, research before you post you doom and gloom so you atleast have solid facts for you skepticism. You can also relax and see what M$ does with the tech insteat of pretending to know more that the people developing the tech.

IdleLeeSiuLung5051d ago

The game was available for people to try on the show floor at E3 so yes it was real time. Wetter you like it for Forza or not wasn't my point.

That is up to the developer to figure out.

So pretty much the same spec as the PS Eye, although I thought the eye went up to 120 Hertz...

Theonik5053d ago

The eye goes to 60Hz i think. Regardless the eye should be capable to do any Kinect shown so far with less lag. (they revolve on a 2D axis and only use the depth tracking to separate players.) I am really disappointed by the tech and how it is utilised thus far.

shoddy5052d ago

More or less powerful we need to see the product.
So far it seem the pseye can do anything kinect can do.
2d 3d I not yet see the advantage.

IHateYouFanboys5052d ago

no, the PSEye cannot do 3D tracking. Kinect can.

the PSEye does 2D motion recognition, Kinect does 3D motion tracking. they are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT things.

Sheikh Yerbouti5052d ago

Going from alkaline to lithium was a significant step for batteries, but at the end of the day it is just a battery. PSEye and Kinect are kind of the same way. At the end of the day it is a game camera - with camera games.

IHateYouFanboys5052d ago

@Sheikh Yerbouti: your example is not really on the same scale of difference as PSEye/Kinect.

a better example using batteries would be the jump from standard batteries to rechargable batteries. theyre both doing the same thing - being batteries - but one of them does things that the other one cannot possibly do, which is be recharged and used again. it does everything the standard battery does, and more.

Kinect does everything the PSEye does (2D motion recognition), and more (3D motion tracking). no amount of software updates can change the hardware in the PSEye, and the hardware is not capable of 3D motion tracking as it lacks infra-red.

IaMs125052d ago

Yes i see your point but how you guys feel about the PS3 can be said the same way.

The PS3 may produce better graphics and be more powerful then the Xbox360, but by the end of they day its still only a console. Also inferior to PC :)

PirosThe4th5052d ago

... PSeye can do 3d as you say... even eyetoy... they used shadows and other stuff to recognize it.
Move is also 3d...

Sheikh Yerbouti5052d ago

Lithium batteries are rechargeable batteries.

Kinect isn't a true 3D camera - it can't render a picture of your butt if you are always facing front. It makes an approximate 3D model using visual cues. The PSEye can do the same, although it will be cruder.

Plus, just because the technology is different, doesn't necessarily mean gameplay will be.

@lams12
Yes, you're right. Similarly Kinect will have some good games, different from PSEye, only if Microsoft makes them. But they haven't made games too different from the PSEye.

Theonik5052d ago

Which is what i meant from the start. None of the games they have shown so far could not have been on the PS Eye.

Sheikh Yerbouti5052d ago (Edited 5052d ago )

Only room for two anyway when you think about it...
but it can keep track of six people during a game in regards to facial recognition. I think that's impressive.

I would love to have Kinect built into my laptop, so only I can get in even without a password. Why is Microsoft wasting this on the XBox again?

Ilikegames765052d ago

still couldn't play it sitting down. Honestly, some guys are so easily impressed by copy cat technology.

blackpanther255052d ago

i was at the engadget show and kudo showed its 3d tracking and when two people where on screen......one person would be red while the other would be green.......but as soon as a third person steped into the camera view two people automatically turned gray and it couldnt read their movements well.

what i took away from that event is that the kinect is pretty kool but for right now it can only work with two people(they could still be working on it)

Hey Microsoft, Where Are The Core Games For Kinect?

Meodia writes, "So about a year ago when Project Natal was first starting off, many Xbox 360 and even other gamers were worried about the future of their console. A local shovelware dumping ground didn't sound quite appealing and Natal looked like it would serve extra servings of it. But Microsoft reassured us, holding our hands and telling us that everything would be alright. Since then, nothing has changed. After that "conference" at E3, we were shown nothing but how to please little girls."

And in the mean time enjoy my controller on games like Gears 3, Reach, Fable 3, Kingdoms, Black Ops, etc etc on the 360.. Not even going to mention my plate for the other systems I own.. Child of Eden is a multiplat, and do you have any gameplay vids of Sonic (I honestly want to see how it works).

@Orange Juice, Ah, I see. Looks kinda simple though. wouldn't really call it a core game.

@Arnon, if that's the case then Kinect really does have the edge in that game... but that's just one game. MS needs to show a LOT more.
