Uncharted 2 vs Uncharted 1: Graphics Comparison

I love the game, its a must buy and I cant wait for it to come out. However this is the upgrade I was expecting, pretty much an Uncharted 1.5 when it comes to graphics. It aint Nathan Drake leaps and bounds ahead of uncharted 1 in the graphics department, thats for sure. Everything else, multiplayer, machinima, story and action is though. Truly one of the greatest games this gen.

To be fair those screens dont make UC2 justice. I mean the difference between UC1 and UC2 is much bigger than those screenshosts show. UC1 looks fairly good but, just as a reference, KZ2 blows it out the water with ease, and we know UC2 is already topping KZ2 in the visual department.

That said, as a 2007 title UC1 got groundbreaking graphics, alongside with Heavenly Sword, and they still hold pretty well, better than any UE3 game to date in any console.

ND has made a pretty awesome job with both titles.

UC2 needs to be on the big screen for one to see all the fantastic details. Best looking game this generation if you ask me. Even beats KZ2 by an inch or two.

-Allow me to answer this one... the reason it looks so much better on your plasma is because of a few things... (the reason I know this is because I have been researching a Plasma I'm about to buy, the Samsung PN50B650 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV)

and what I found is this, plasma's tend to have a much higher hertz then your LCD for example the one I want has 600hz compared to 120 or 240hz on a high end LCD. -(let's just say 600hz is life like)

So the picture tends to be more Life like... also Plasma's use glass where LCD's use a plastic type of screen.. and this plasma has -3,000,000:1 Mega Contrast - which is just insane compared to LCD 1200-really low to high end 150,000:1 - still really low compared to plasma.

The response time is much higher and life like on a Plasma for example this one has a 0.001ms pixel-response time. (let's just say there is no lag your eye will be able to see, where LCD has like 8ms or 6ms on high end LCD... you can notice the lag.

So a plasma is closer to a TV or CRT monitor in terms of life like picture Quality.. -But it's in HD-full 720 or 1080p so it is showing 3 times the detail or a regular TV.

So compared to your TV or even an LCD -the game will look best on a Plasma or a CRT Monitor that does HD. -These two are the best way to really see the true detail of the game. The new top LCD's are not bad but they will not compare to the picture of a good plasma.

So enjoy, because if you noticed it looks better on your plasma you have one of the good ones...

ive been researching that plasma tv aswell.. the specs blow the LCDs away and its perfect for gaming with the refresh rate and everything but im not really sure if i should get it or not.. i mean its bigger and cheaper than the LCD ive been looking into.. but still people seem to like LCDs better and the burn-in thing on plasmas kinda scares me..

i just dont wanna blow my money and be disappointed.. but 50' inches 1080p 600hz .001 response time sure are tempting.

Wow I can't believe people on here are saying U2 looks better than KZ2! A lot of KZ2 literally looks REAL like the lighting and guns. U2 looks amazing but none of it looks REAL. So much stuff in KZ2 looks as if you can reach out and touch but there's nothing like that in U2. Again, U2 looks amazing but KZ2 looks better... a lot better. You guys are so hyped for U2 than you're going blind. I'm super excited for U2 just as much as anyone else but c'mon. I'm not saying that KZ2 is a better game than U2, I'm just saying KZ2 has better graphics than U2.

KZ2 is #1 in graphics and U2 is #2.

Show me a screenshot of U2 that looks better than this.. or even close for that matter. This screenshot doesn't even do KZ2 justice but U2 still can't match it.

I agree, its pretty hard to top greatness, and Uncharted one was exactly that. As a complete package though, Uncharted 2 is insanly better then Uncharted 1. Naughty dog are easily one of the best devs around and show that they got the PS3 tech down to an art.

I just hope people put the Gears 1 and Gear 2 graphics comparision in perspective when it comes to comparing Uncharted 1 and 2. However, if people want to compare Gears of War games and the Uncharted games, the clear winner is the Uncharted games, they truly show the Ps3`s power and look so much better then Gears. Not that it matters though, as long as they are two great games, and they are.

Uncharted does not look better than Gears of War. I've seen every game that has great graphics on any console. But in my opinion no game looks visually more impressive than Gears of War 2. The level design and art style is simply unique and great.

I hate to break it to you but technicaly speaking Gears of war is not better then Uncharted and that it pretty much what I was talking about. If you want to talk art style, that is a whole other discussion and I would agree with you on that one, I do prefer the Gear of war look. The problem with copmparing Gears and Uncharted`s art style though is that it is subjective.

for example, Aion is technically superior to World of Warcraft and I do think it has its moments of greatness compared to WoW, however I prefer Blizzards art style and the end product is much more appealing to me, especially for a 7+ year old graphics engine. Its not how many coloring crayons you have, its what you draw with them that counts. And whether you like what has been drawn or not is all subjective.

and UC still looks real good, its great because we thought at the time it would be difficult to top and Naughty Dog has accomplished that and much more, added multiplayer, co-op, better graphics, better gameplay mechanics, they've just done so well, i love that studio!

edit: i think it'd be great if like naughty dog, insomniac and GG combined for a one off project, imagine the outcome! I can dream...

If you had actually beaten Uncharted, you'd have seen in the credits that both Geurilla Games and Insomniac helped Naughty Dog with their technology. (If my memory serves me correctly, that is.)

That's the beauty of first and second party developers; they can exchange technology for the greater good.

Thats a tough comparison because in all honesty part 2 looks about the same as 1 with some lighting upgrades. Looks amazing but I seriously don't see a true difference in these shots.

Hm, looks like they have taken some details out in some areas (textures/polys on the environment/leaves/trees) and added some in other areas (e.g. character models are more detailed, etc).

BTW: This game has already improved from the closed beta to the demo. I mean a lot. Jaggies in the first, and absolutely smooth visuals in the public demo. Great level of polish, an other then the jungle levels, I have the feeling it has a higher polycount in general.

The environment is different and so is the water in every country and they've done it well.

the first game had a mass ocean so the depth and density of the water will look and feel different.

Improvements I've noticed from playing the new multi-player demo:

1. Skybox now features moving clouds. Clouds in the first game were simply static images.
2. Explosions are much more visceral and pronounced and the weird mushroom cloud effect is no longer present.
3. Screen tearing and texture pop-in have been eliminated. I've been playing the multi-player demo for hours now -- if the demo is representative of what to expect from the full game -- and haven't experienced any of these issues. These technical faults were never that prevalent in the first game, but did crop up from time to time.
4. Character movements are smoother and the transitions between actions more realistic.
5. Textures appear to be slightly better than the first game.

What impresses me the most is how rock solid the frame rate is even when the action heats up with several characters on screen at once. This is the most noticeable improvement from the first game.

I really hope they release a full tech interview like they did with the first game.

One thing that is immediately noticeable is the addition of real-time SSAO (screen space ambient occlusion) to Uncharted 2. You can see this by examining the shadows underneath Nathan's straps on his back.

Thing is when you take a screenshot, like you can do in the beta and play around with different settings.

And guess what, alot of people don't realize there are alot of modes and maps in the beta.

I played for a few hours last night.

Some good players, some bad.

One team i was on, didn't even know what to do with the gold.

But at least it shows new players trying it out etc.

On the note of graphics, i've noticed when you take a screenshot you lose some detail. Compression.

But I fking love the ice caves Mp gold!!!!

Yeah, the skies have been improved considerably. Also, detail is just off the wall. The tiles and such that they use are very very good and they are everywhere. Also, just the level of polish is amazing. The first game tore frames a lot I would say as much as 10 percent and this one is just looking unbelievable.

Yeah cool thing is they managed to v-sync Uncharted 2, so no screen tearing =)
