TGS 09: Team ICO's Fumito Ueda on The Last Guardian

Though Ueda-san wasn't up for spilling *too many* details on the upcoming The Last Guardian, he did give some interesting insight into the way he and his team make games. He also hints that maybe we don't know how this game is going to play out, after all.

If I only have enough money to buy one game for the rest of this generation until the next Team ICO game, it would be this. These games are easy to describe to people in term of game and story. But the feeling you get from playing Team Ico games are difficult to explain because people have to play them to experience them.

I too totally agree, and feel just the same....

My most anticipated game.In the little we have seen from the game, along with what we expect from Ueda the game already oozes style and ambiance.

I cannot wait to see more gameplay and details, but already expect nothing but excellence...

Very true, trying to explain to someone who has never played a team ico game why their game were so great would just make you look nuts.

Cant wait for their next project tho.

eagle215340d ago

This is on top of my 2010 list. Bubbles for all you guys. :p

I would have to agree with you. Ueda and his team makes things that are more than just games. They are experiences that move a person. The world that he has created in them allow him to tug at the emotions in ways that games never could.

Nikuma5340d ago

Can't wait for this game. ICO games are some of the few that truly move me. People who say video games can't be art have never played a Team ICO game.

TLG is the only game that could surpass MGS4 this gen for me.

Edit:@ABizzel1. Thats what i think as well. The last gaurdian is actually the kid who is suppose to look after the Eagle. There is a curse on people of the land in which they are slowly turning into stone (reference the stone soldiers). The eagle is suppose to be sacrafice to lift the curse however the gaurdian, the kid grew too attach to the eagle and tried to free it which is the main objective of the game similar to ICO and the opposite of SOTC. Ueda said TLG will be similar to ICO.

However in the end the eagle understands that the gaurdian is slowly truning into stone as well similar to how Wander turned in SOTC with every clossi he fell. The eagle will sacrafice himself to save the kid but instead of turning completely into stone the eagle turns into living stone linking it to SOTC. Weather dormin will have a role i am not sure but this is my best guess knowing Ueda and his amazing games. The only game that topped ICO last gen for me is MGS3. Ueda and Kojima are tow of a kind. Ueda is a minimilist though which is why i respect him alot.

This game is going to test those gamers who truly care about what's going on with the game. I'm already sad, because I too think the beast is going to die in the end.

Maybe he'll pull a tie in like SOTC and ICO. Oooooooooh maybe the beast the last living Colossi how's that for a twist.

Besides the fact that they made 2 previous amazing games. Its obvious that they are great developers. He clearly says why he doesn't want to make a sequel to the other games. It wouldn't be as amazing as the first two. Hes probably right. Not that they can't they obviously can make it better we have seen their work but sequels aren't always as great as the first one.

that creatures too cute...i want it :)

lowcarb5340d ago

This game is going to be so fraking amazing. Really I applaud developers working on PS3 for working hard at pushing boundaries like graphics emotion and immersion. There's a lot of great games out there and coming but there needs to be a standard.

The Wood5340d ago

It helps that sony has so many. Games dont have to be rushed out like they would of if there were large gaps in releases. It also helps when there are relative flops as there are other games around to cushion the blow

Sunny_D5340d ago

Very nice. So the story isn't going to play out like everyone was saying.(Griffin dies to save boy, or vice versa)

I've played 15, and I wouldn't consider any of those underrated TBH. Some of them are pretty high rated.

banger88156d ago

That's amazing, Gamingbolt actually put all 15 games on the same page.

shinoff2183155d ago

I. Not seeing anything on that list underrated. I never played concrete genie, the ASTRO vr,and one other but I forgot the name already. Nothing on there was underrated at all imo.

persona4chie154d ago

There’s only 4 of those games I never played, and no most of those aren’t underrated.

The Last Guardian Is One of Gaming’s Most Beautiful Depictions of Friendship

Friendship is hard to depict accurately, but The Last Guardian does a good job of showing all its ups and downs through Trico and the boy.

Technical issues aside, this is easily one of my favorite games from last gen.

ClayRules2012839d ago (Edited 839d ago )

I couldn’t agree more. I’ll never forget the emotional experience I had with this game. After waiting all those years, and than to finally play it. It was a visual beauty, along with offering a story/friendship between the 2 characters that was unique and unforgettable. Far surpassed my expectations. A masterpiece!

Technical issues aside, never have I played anything quite like it!

Magog839d ago

I enjoyed the game but it started out too simple and easy. If the entire game was as intense and challenging as the last 20% it would have been a 10/10 experience.

EvertonFC839d ago

Great game, so underrated. One of my favourites and top 20 games of all time

Phoenix76839d ago

I managed to grab the collectors edition for £40 about a year after it released. Was an enjoyable game, but I had just finished Shadow of the colossus, and whilst I enjoyed it, it was not as good when compared.

Making Sense of Trico: The Last Guardian's Misunderstood Hero

To better understand why The Last Guardian's Trico clicked with some gamers and annoyed others, this article will explore the story behind the beast to see what makes it tick.
