Pachter's Wii HD is a reality - it's the PS3

Nick @ PS3Center writes:

In a lot of respects, Pachter is spot on. With HDTVs predicted to become a majority in 2010 in the US and 2012 in Europe, prospective buyers will become more aware of HD content and the Wii will begin to look even more dated. Consumers will still want their innovative motion control gameplay but they'll want it in something that can show off the muscle in their new home theater set ups. And at that point, consumers will turn to Michael Pachter's fabled Wii HD. Luckily for them, the Wii HD will become reality in 2010, but it won't be Nintendo delivering the product to these end users. Rather, it will be Sony and their PlayStation 3.

i'm not hating, but i need a controller in my hand, something to hold, and definitely buttons.. just moving my arms and legs without holding anything might be the weak point of Natal..

gauntletpython5345d ago

The thing is with Natal, it's not like the Wii, so it won't be as familiar to the Wii crowd as the PS3's wands would be. Not dismissing Natal, it's way more innovative than Sony's wand is, but it just doesn't have as many options to do Wii/PS3 type games because it's a different set up.

gaffyh5345d ago

Natal is more like Eyetoy HD really, PS3 motion controller is a lot like the Wii, except with much more power, and therefore WiiHD.

I'm not big on motion control, but that's mostly to do with how much I hated the Wiimote. My wife was the first to point out "I'm not going to have to point this stupid thing at the screen the entire time, am I?"

I hated that it had to be pointed at the screen the entire time. I hated the "put the Wiimote on your shoulder and now it's a rocket launcher!". I hated a simple button press being replaced by a wiggle when a button press would do. I hated how the Wii couldn't track the controller near the edges of the screen. I hated how the Wii-mote, once off the screen took you a few seconds to regain your bearings on the screen again and by that time...oh, look at that. You're dead.

Fun for party games. Lame ass for everything else, which is why I sold my launch Wii before Christmas last year.

I'm hopeful for Sony Motion control because the tracking is millimeter accurate, that should take care of what I hated about the Wiimote, but I won't be sold on it until I see how games start implementing the tech.

Hoolock5345d ago

The PS3 wands work in a very similar way to the Nintendo Wii except more accurate. The PS3 has Very good visuals so the statement that the PS3 is the Wii HD is actually very true. And @1 you can have a pad in your hand to use natal, its the one you have now except you can get all the extra depth that cant be done with buttons now with your body. Controller free doesn't work for hardcore gamers and that's why you wont see many shooters that don't need a pad, instead you will see shooters that have extra functions, features and interactivity that could never be done with just a pad or controller.

Hoolock5345d ago

the idea of PSeye and Natal is the exact same but the technology is very different. PSeye was limited by its inability to sense depth in a scene. For example imagine a free kick football mini game. PSeye could sense the leg coming in for the strike as it can see contrast but it would not be able to sense the angle of the foot hitting the ball or the y axis speed of the leg as it came in to strike. Natal is the technological step in the right direction. PSeye was the original idea for cameras and games but Natal is the tech that works

StayHigh5345d ago (Edited 5345d ago )

so true i want actually controllers to hold in my hands..Dont get me wrong im not hating on Natal but its so similar to the eye toy..Why do 360 fanboys think Natal is so innovative? waving your hands up and down while standing suppose to be fun?.. It hurts me watching that guy play katmari on the Natal..ouch..

imagine wii games coming to the PS3!! In full hd glory that be awesome

Hoolock5345d ago

Neither Natal or the Wands are very innovative, the fact both Sony fans and Microsoft fans like them is because they work better than the original outings of the technology. The wands are a much better Wiimote and Natal is a much better PSeye. Plus I think the major problem with the hardcore gamers reception of the Natal system and the wands is the fact neither company has yet to show how they can expand our experiences in hardcore games. All we've seen from Natal is social fun games and all we have seen from the wands is the replacement of one of my analogue sticks for Resi 5. All we are left with currently is our ability to guess how these technologies will make hardcore games fun and unfortunately many people are unable to see past current stage demo's.

thedisagreefairy5345d ago

said that when the last article of wii hd came out.

Sarcasm5345d ago

All we know is that the games industry is going into an interesting change by next year.

BLuKhaos5345d ago

The PS wand is a combination of both the Wiimote and the Eyetoy( you know the thing Natal was ripped from), so how can Natal be more innovative than the PS wand when it is based on the PS wand's predecessor?

Syronicus5344d ago

Future Proof.

They did it then and are showing the benefits of their strategy now.

Sony's Motion control> Wii motion plus> Natal

shadowfox5345d ago

I think the biggest concern is fragmenting the PS3 userbase. If this takes off in a big way, you're still going to be stuck with a sizable percent of the userbase without the motion controller.

Although, I guess in reality it isn't a whole lot different than what Nintendo did with Wii Motion+, except that's a whole lot easier to bundle... And if they did release a Wii HD, that would just further fragment the Wii base too.

Siesser5345d ago

Not really different than worrying about the number of users that have a PSeye - it's a niche, but motion's by no means going to become a standard in games, I'd imagine. Or if so, it'd be something that enhances rather than alters how the game's played - like Burnout allowing you to take pics for license and online and stuff. I think there'll be a lot of specifically designed games, downloadable games, and the rest to accentuate regular releases.

xc7x5345d ago

then i played the Wii and it wasn't so bad but i hate the Wii's graphics,so i will be on board the PS3 motion control bandwagon come next Spring.

gaffyh5345d ago

Same here, but it's also just that Wii games have horrible coding. For example they have stupid checkpoint systems, and save systems. i only like playing WiiSports, but even then I haven't played my Wii in 4/5 months.

shadowfox5345d ago

Yea, there's nothing I hate about motion controls... I just feel there downright unnecessary at some points. Like if a game uses good motion controls, I'm all for that, I just don't like gimmicky stuff.

PS3 only does everything.

Soon we will be able to play true hardcore games like RE5, LBP but also on new games.

Microsoft once tried to nab LittleBigPlanet from Sony after a few drinks

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow6d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1825d ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie4d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere4d ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow3d ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

OtterX5d ago

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney3d ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno5d ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno5d ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

4d ago
fsfsxii4d ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno4d ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?
