Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars Review

When you mention the phrase 'Real Time Strategy' the Command and Conquer series is always the first game that comes to mind. In the past their games have gone through hot and cold patches with games like Red Alert 2 taking the PC world by storm and then stumbling with titles such as C&C: Generals. The latest incarnation entitled Command and Conquer 3: The Tiberium Wars is definitely in the hot category and once again PC gamers across the globe were on cloud nine creating stealth tanks and destroying their various foes on and offline. EA knew the success this game would reap and decided to also release it on the Xbox 360 and here we are, with my controller in one hand and this keyboard in the other. EA have already done themselves proud with an RTS title on the 360, in the form of Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth and so they are attempting to recreate the same success but with Tiberium Wars instead.

History of Real-Time Strategy: The Downfall (2004 - 2010)

VGChatz's Taneli Palola: "There's no question that during these years the overall popularity of the genre took a significant hit, as most games within it specialized even further by adding new elements from other types of games into their gameplay loops and consequently became increasingly niche as the years wore on.

However, this doesn't in any way mean that the period was devoid of great games. Quite the contrary, in fact. Arguably some of the greatest RTS titles ever made came out around this time, and much of this was because many developers were increasingly familiar and comfortable with adding new twists and gameplay elements to the familiar formula. As such, even when the genre's popularity dwindled, many studios were still creating excellent and groundbreaking titles almost every year, just for a smaller audience than in years past."

Aside from C&C 4, the other C&C's from EA were all good/great. The genre nose dived once Moba's rose in popularity, even Petroglyph Games (ex-Westwood employees) haven't had a hit since Star Wars: Empire at War (2006), all there games got abandoned after launch.

Command & Conquer Series Throwback

It's been a while since we have seen a new C&C and while it was a brilliant RTS game in it's time is there any hope for the series? For those who didn't know there was going to be a FPS version of C&C but instead we got C&C Generals.

Controller Issues

GamingLives laments the frustrating lack of controller support offered by some PC games.

"Perhaps most importantly for me, If I ever want to experience Oblivion - one of my most loved Xbox 360 games – in all its shiny PC glory, then, for the time being, I’ll have to stick my well-chewed wad of apathy gum under the table and dick about with Xpadder. However, if the mapping goes tits up and I end up attacking Thoronir instead of trying to buy a mortar and pestle, then I’ll be damn annoyed. But not too much. He’s a creepy bastard. Somehow though, I doubt that the Imperial Guard will buy the classic “Sorry, officer, I was asking if he wanted to buy a used primrose when my sword just accidentally went off. It’s never done that before!”
