The computer game that destroys your files

Wired: Lose/Lose is the sort of computer game most people will be too afraid to install. In fact, I was slightly nervous just watching the online video (below). From the website:

"Lose/Lose is a video-game with real life consequences. Each alien in the game is created based on a random file on the player's computer. If the player kills the alien, the file it is based on is deleted. If the player's ship is destroyed, the application itself is deleted."

If you think they're kidding, the game reinforces the message at the title screen in large red capital letters. Only the brave, or those playing on someone else's computer, should continue. Gameplay resembles a classic top-down shoot-em-up, with aliens racing down towards your tiny intergalactic ship, menacing yet vulnerable to your pew-pew laser. Each alien destroyed explodes into tiny bits, which seems appropriate. You aren't even told which file you just killed – only the file extension gives any indication.

What kind of sadist would actually download and play this "game"? LOL

CadDad5332d ago

Is it wrong that the first thing I thought about was trying it out....

I mean I can easily back up and restore my hard-drive, but I'm strange like that and I don't think I want to miss playing a game like this.

It's called masochist, not sadist.

Virtualization is a way to go. You have nothing to lose that way.

Nineball21125332d ago

@ zagibu... You are correct sir! I guess since I'm not into either of those, I get them confused. LOL...

Why do I imagine there will be ppl who try to dl and play this game at work or at someone ELSE's house. LOL

im def gonna trick one of my friends into playing this game

Proxy5332d ago

If you play it on Vista does it pop up a permission prompt every time you kill an alien?

Raz5332d ago

Seems like an entertaining way to wipe your HDD...funny thing is if you win the game, you lose every file on your computer.

Lose/Lose is the perfect name for this game. Somebody had a lot of time on their hands...

Mandate Radio: Ep. 6 (10/30/2013)

"Pete and Frank are back and at it once again to talk games, games, and a little life. Joining them this week is a very special mystery guest, who is certain he can be taken and seized and ride that seizure all the way to the top. He also plays DOTA, which the guys talk a bit more about. Pete brings ‘Dungeons Dashers’ and ‘Castles in the Sky’ in for discussion and Frank talks about ‘War of the Roses’, ‘Lose Lose’ from Zach Gage, and passively mentions Whale Trail. The guys then talk news and have a heated Rando discussion which sparks some debate between Pete and our very special guest."

PC game labelled malware by anti-virus software

An independent PC and Mac game has been tagged as malicious by anti-virus software Symantec.

The game, called Lose/Lose, stays true to its name by deleting files from your hard drive every time you shoot an enemy ship. It begins with an explicit warning that this will be the case.

But Symantec claims that this is not enough for it not to be classed as a malicious application.

In a statement, Symantec stated: "There's nothing stopping someone with more malicious intentions from modifying it slightly and then passing it on to unsuspecting users, causing significant damage to a computer."
