New motion controllers, set to form a central part of Microsoft and Sony's offering at the Tokyo Games Show this week, may have a limited effect on game console sales, according to one of Japan's top video-game executives.
"Present game machines already have a lot of functions: they are a network terminal, a Blu-ray or DVD player, and a gaming machine. Compared to these three pillars, the [new motion] controllers are quite limited, so the impact may be small. They are an extension of the gaming function," said Yoichi Wada, chief executive of game publisher Square Enix, in an interview with the Financial Times.
The dramatic success of Nintendo's Wii - which has a controller that users can wave around to play a game - has prompted Sony and Microsoft to develop motion controllers of their own, which are expected to be released next year.
