IGN: Halo 3: ODST Review

Halo 3: ODST began as an idea for a simple expansion to Halo 3. It would be just a few hours long and help tide the fans over until Halo: Reach is ready in late 2010. That little idea grew to be so much more. The end result is a package that no Halo fan should be without, as it is the definition of fan service. You get a six hour campaign that expands the boundaries of what to expect in a Halo game, an excellent new cooperative mode called Firefight, and an entire second disc filled with adversarial maps. This isn't a full-blown sequel, which might disappoint some people, but you'd do well to take it for what it is: another great game from Bungie.

I don't care what the PS3 fanboys say; I can't wait! I don't have any of Halo 3's map packs, so to me it's actually a good value since I'll be getting $28 worth of DLC. $30 expansion and firefight + $28 DLC = $58 so maybe I'm paying $2 extra but whatever. It's NOT a value for all of my friends who already bought $30 worth of Halo 3 DLC.

BTW the reason I listed the DLC as $28 is because the Heroic map pack is now free, and the Legendary map pack is now only $8 instead of $10.

Just to clarify: I am a NEUTRAL fan and I don't prefer either console to the other, but the PS3 are getting a little out of control about ODST, that's why I mentioned them. Since I praised ODST in the comment, I'm sure I'll go down 1 or 2 bubbles...

Funny how a 6 hour single player experience can garner so high scores without anyone questioning the content. Sure for players who dont have halo3 it is a nice addition with the halo 3 multiplayer. but i swear 90% if not more of the people who buy this game already owns Halo 3. All they get is a 6 hour singleplayer experience + a coop mode. You get about as much content for 20$ on GTA4 DLC.

So what would happen if it turned out Modern Warfare 2 only copied the multiplayer from Modern Warfare 1 and only had a 6 hour single player experience. Would it garner 9/10 scores? I cant tell for sure ofcourse, but i highly doubt it and it certainly wouldnt deserve it.

No Infamous, Heavenly sword, Wipeout, NGS, R&C, Resistance, Flower? (a PSN title?) they are all not Triple A titles good games but not triple A. Aside from uncharted 1 (which IMO was Triple A but couldnt get past the tomb raider compairisons (Remember Dude Raider?) In reality NO Tomb raider is better than Drakes Fortune. I mean we,ve all seen the gears uncharted compairisins and U:DF has some great game play. I feel if Gears 1&2 is Triple A uncharted drakes fortune definately meets the requirements.

In that same light Majority of 360s overhyped titles arent Triple A.

I play what i think is the best. I liked halo until i played COD MW and that game changed my expectations for FPS games and Halo plays like a last gen game after going to COD. Although, Halo's story is better.

It all comes down to preference, play the games that make you happy.

PS: BTW IGN gave resistance 1&2 and Gears 1&2 - 9.5 Uncharted 2 will be better than all four of those games thats why i dont put much stock in reviews.

I do understand your point, but this is N4G where that kind of sense seems to be lost amongst the populous.

We are constantly being reminded by the narrow-minded fanboys on this site what they consider the requirements for a AAA to be title yet these standards seem to somewhat change when it comes to an exclusive game on the opposite system.

At one time someone would consider above 9 the requisite to be called a AAA title, yet in an argument with another about quality of exclusive on a particular platform they would create a list of titles they would say were AAA even though some of them do not meet the demands they set out before.

There exists the double-standard ideal.

I could find a whole host of older titles by browsing through metacritic or gamerankings which were considered great games in their time which did not score above 9, even still some would say they are better than some of the games we play today.

This review concerns me. In it they say you can complete the campaign in 10 hours on Heroic (Halo's equivalent of Hard Mode) when taking your sweet time. So I'm guessing Normal is 6-8 hours. In other words, similar to Heavenly Sword and Uncharted. But wait, there's Firefight! ...with no matchmaking. Great. Especially since I'm not on Live yet, and probably won't be until the new year. So, yeah, I guess that means tough luck. Unless the game allows four players offline. That'd be cool.

The thirty some maps combined with the campaign and Firefight mode is worth the $60 bucks to me, but what about those die hards that already have the packs. They're supposed to pay full price for five new maps, a six hour campaign, and a clone of Horde mode? Well, to be fair, Firefight does sound quite different. I'd like to see this teamwork integration for myself. Nevertheless, $60 for just that?

I'm starting to agree with the rest of the crowd. They should have split up ODST. Campaign and Firefight in one version for $30. The multiplayer maps in a second for the same.

Regardless, this is a great offer for someone like me, but the 9.0 for such a highly priced expansion irks me. The campaign better be as good as Heavenly Sword or Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. If so, Bungie <3. If not... GRRR!

Well for me this game would be a tough one to review. If you're reviewing value, then for me this would be a really tough one, because I'm 100% against the idea that you can't buy Firefight Mode and the ODST campaign without also buying all of the Halo 3 multiplayer stuff those people have already bought, but at the same time it's a great value for those that never bought the Halo 3 content.

If you're just reviewing quality with no reference to value, then a 9 seems like a fine score. I mean, at least in my opinion I would agree that all of the content that comes with ODST is great. Bungie's games are always top-notch in terms of presentation. The soundtrack and is always epic. The campaigns in the Halo games are never perfect, but always fun. The multiplayer is always a great time.

And in reference to the comments that a sub-HD game from 2007 can't get a 9 in graphics, well . . . I don't know about you, but I think the 2D Castlevania games (from Symphony of the Night thru to the GBA and DS ones) are absolutely gorgeous to look at, and those games range from the late 90's and none of them are in HD. Sometimes art style can go a long way to make a game qualify as "pretty" even if the technology its running is out-dated, so I wouldn't discredit them just yet because of a silly thing like a "9 for graphics."

That all said, I do own the Halo 3 multiplayer that comes on ODST's second disc, so value IS important to me as a consumer and as a gamer, and the fact that I can't get to the new stuff without also re-purchasing the old stuff is a deal breaker for me. No, I'm not buying this game right now, I'll wait until I can get it cheaper down the line.

Halo: ODST will score well with the critics. Unfortunately, people make the mistake of comparing it with rival games like Uncharted 2, when in reality, they're not even rivals. Uncharted 2 is a full game, while Halo: ODST is more of an expansion. It's still going to kick ass, no doubt, but it's unfair to compare games that are on two different levels. Fortunately, Halo:ODST will be bringing in loads of money and on that's what's important. Game development is all about finances, I may not like it but it's true. Really seems like IGN are trying to play it safe. And for the fools saying not to compare it to UC2 because it's on a different console, well that's just the stupidest thing I've ever heard. PS3 and 360 consoles are directly competing with each other. All games are measured on the same scale and scored relative to each other, regardless of the platform.(or at least they should) So to give ODST a 9 for graphics when compared the 10 UC2 and KZ2 received, there's clearly something wrong here.

Again, I've not saying ODST is a bad game, in fact it will most likely be a blast to play, but judging from the video's and screen shots I think it's very unprofessional of IGN to give the graphics a 9. I'm very disappointed and now I will have to take all their future reviews with skepticism.

too many graphic nerds are dumbly obssessed with photo-realism to flex their epeen however it's not the end-all, be-all.

most great artists shun photo-realistic styles because it's generally bland. Halo 3 is still one of the best looking games out there because of it's great art direction and creativity.

While I disagree with packaging the DLC maps for $60 for people who only want the SP, should be $30 for sp and $30 for just MP and $60 for both. I'm sure the game deserves the scores it's garnered so far. Halo 3 was a good game and this is just a fresh take on the world of Halo. For the haters mocking the 9 in graphics be a realist for once. Halo 3's graphics are not as bad as some of you try to make them out to be. Halo 3 still has very impressive water and lighting effects to this DAY. The game is not getting a 9 in GFX because it's got impressive textures and HDR lighting and all the tech stuff from UC2. It's getting a 9 in GFX because Bungie has INCREDIBLE artists, while the graphics are dated, artistically it looks very good.

Well, that's a bit harsh. I understand seeing anything Halo-related score well will get a PS3 fanboy's panties in a bunch, but stilll.
Bungie giving their fans what they want and giving them a quality fresh take on the Halo universe doesn't just get to be counted as trash, like you'd apparently like it to be.

People relax, we have great games for both the 360 and ps3 this fall. I will enjoy ODST, I will enjoy uncharted 2. Uncharted will most likely win GOTY. ODST is an expansion. Halo sound has always been good, the score is top notch stuff. From the videos and reviews so far uncharted 2 will not be touched in graphics by any games for a few months.

If you don't have a PS3 you're missing out, if you don't have a 360 you're missing out.

It has a campaign, it has firefight mode, it adds a few maps to the Halo 3 MP experience, and there's also the forthcoming Reach beta.

That's a better value than single player only Heavenly Sword, inFamous, Uncharted, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Dead Space and any other SP only game that retailed for $60.

I would also like for people to quit crying about the gfx. Halo 3's gfx are highly under-rated. It isn't supposed to be uber-realistic. It stands out from a lot of other games, and it is in fact a great looking game. It is leaps and bounds better looking than Halo 2. Calling it Halo 2 in HD is far from accurate. Go compare the Scarab in Halo 2, to the Scarabs in Halo 3 and tell me there's little no difference.

This game will be awesome, and I can't wait to play it.

I mean, look at the truth of it. Reach has been announced. Maybe not the internet, but definitely N4G, this website has got to be the worst website in the entire world for fanboys, especially Playstation ones, it'd ridiculous.

Two minutes ago i was reading a article in the 360 section for a 360 exclusive game, but you wouldn't of guessed so with the over whelming amount of Sony fans in here.

I think its sad how desperately these tards want Halo to fail because they know it's one of or maybe the most successful games franchises in gaming history. It's success is just a gimps of its greatness, the Playstation will never have a game like Halo, nor will the Xbox again, the community for Halo is just outstanding!

Halo 3: ODST, got a 9/10 on IGN, and the game wasn't even in development for a year. Just goes to show how good Bungie really are.

You guys do have a right and an opinion to support whatever it is you want, but does that mean you have to bash the competition so much?!

I look at sites like IGN, Gamespot and their reviews as more of a guide and way to get info on the game. I never take their reviews to heart.
I usually disagree with them. Even the smallest things.
I just like reading/watching reviews because they show a bit of the game before I buy it. And sometimes they do tell you a few things to watch out for. Which is cool.
But I'm not going to sit and argue about what score they gave the game. I can't believe how many people are doing that. Get out more!!!

People will review the same material in many different ways. One mans garbage is another mans treasure. What you have to do is let go of external influences and get youself into a certain mindset to be able to appreciated what you are experiencing. If the source material is part of or a continuation of an existing experience then you can bring that into the decision.

Some people have a lack of imagination, some are selfish some are defensive / offensive / immature / intellectual / comedic etc, each type of person will have a different experience when playing a certain type of game. Some hate sci-fi some hate action, some people dont have the first clue about art appreciation, doesn't make them wrong, just narrow minded, and under developed. One has to have the desire to learn and to experience new things in order to grow and to be able to sensibly communicate or contribute.

Alas, this site does not bring out the best in most people, we hide behind our avatars and monikers, ganging up on the minorities and massaging each others ego's. Sensible debate and discussion is akin to finding a needle in a haystack on this website. The chest beating and sh1t throwing only seems to stop when the odds are vastly out numbered in favor of one community. I have seen many posters able to be sociable when the source material hits the right spot for them but then digress into animals when an alternative medium is being praised that they do not believe in.

Maybe some day this site will be a true community, for the moment there are just to many insecure people who have no self respect, the hate will no doubt continue to spread.

I however will remain optimistic and hope that certain people on this site will some day be able to open their minds and experience the true meaning of being a gamer and not forever remain socially inept.

Well now that we're seeing a lot of the these "safe" reviews coming out with 9's (which is BS and everyone know it), I really do hope it sells well.

It will send a message loud and clear to all developers that you can get away with this sort of thing. Why bother making full games anymore? DLC for full price is perfectly acceptable to bots and you know what? If this is what you accept from game developers, they will gladly give it to you. Don't come crying later when quality titles are fewer and farther in between.

As long as devs continue making full games on PS3 and they keep that full price DLC sh*t on the 360, I'll be happy.

The only reason i want this is for the Firefight mode, its sounds like alot of fun and looks it too. The main reason people really want it is for the Halo:Reach beta... which takes place before the events of Halo:Combat Evolved.. Dont get me wrong im a huge xbox fan but to give this game a 9/10 is a joke to me.All it is,is an expansion pack for $69.3 new multiplayer maps and a short new nightfire story.To me its a slap in the face by bungie and microsoft just to make a profit and fool everyone to believe its a full campaign, and to add further insult there going to but the Reach demo in there to make people buy it just for that.No offense but this bothers me so much.This is why there are so many problems with the xbox.Plzzzz come out with something new and fresh and stop giving us crap.Halo is dead time to move on to bigger and better games that will past our time. IGN compared games based on the console and other games in that genre. Im not a big Halo fan but, it is better than alot of other FPS titles.
Not better than KZ2 or Timesplitters but still good, imo.
