Level7 (Sweden) : Gran Turismo PSP Review

PA Knutsson writes "With its 800 cars and 35 tracks impresses Gran Turismo in terms of substance, but too far to buy cars and test them on the tracks is missing. There is no reason to run the slow Skrutt cars, something illogical enough is a big minus in my book.
If you can live with the lack of a crowded contrast, there is not much to complain about. For those who want an easy and fast playing racing games Gran Turismo PSP is perfect. Those who want a Gran Turismo game, unfortunately be disappointed."

@YLOD

What was that sound? I think actually heard God laugh at your pathetic attempt at spinning my insult.

Stop describing yourself NegativeCreep. Its creepy for a 40 year old man to be on a site like N4G.

and Lets see the game that Polyphony Digital made:

In Polyphony Digitals own words:

""While it's not possible to fully recreate the very same feeling you get from playing GT in Full HD, a new facet of gaming is opens its possibilities. If you have 15 minutes, if you're in your car, on the bus or on a train, you can turn it on, and play. So instead of recreating the same feeling you get when playing at home, we created a portable Gran Turismo that will offer the same satisfaction you get when playing at home." - Kazunori Yamauchi

"In single player
you have classic tracks, time-attack, drift mode and Mission Challenge. This mode has the familiar things you'd expect in a GT game, including license tests. There are of course elements designed specifically for the PSP, starting with adhoc mode, which will allow 4 players to race each other. In adhoc mode, you can also trade the cars in your garage or you can share them with others. These are unique features found only in GT PSP." - Kazunori Yamauchi"

So why on earth do you review a game for "Those who want a Gran Turismo game"? When its a mobil GT experience. Why not review it for what the game was intended to do, from the start. Be a 15 minute pick up and play party game?

So lets get the order of operations straight:

1. Polyphony says they are making a party/train riding/Gran turismo game without a career mode.

2. Gran Turismo Mobil ships without a career mode.

3. Reviewers who all previewed the game, had nothing but good things to say about it, and knew there was no career mode/updgrades.

4. Reviewers review the game low for having no career mode/upgrades. And at the same time say its great for anyone who want an easy portable psp game, says the physics are great, as are the visuals.

7/10

Really?

Polluted5359d ago

Maybe the reviewer just didn't have that much fun with it. Is that so wrong?

thor5359d ago

Can't attach a score to a game which is great for some and disappointing for others.

I personally wasn't aware that this is what they were doing with GT PSP. For that reason it seems like a disappointment. Especially when other games are coming out (Motorstorm: Arctic Edge) with 10 cars on the track at the same time, decent AI, and a full campaign mode. This game is ALSO able to be played as a casual game, but also has a sense of progression.

Don't forget also that GT PSP does have flaws like poor AI, only 4 cars per race, no online, no leaderboards, no damage, dealerships only available on certain days. These ruin its value even when considered as a casual game.

I'm gonna try to say this in the most non-fanboyish way possible...

Let them whine all the want, you tell someone ahead of time what to expect and instead of working with that they would rather go and downplay just because it doesn't have what they want. I'm still going to buy this not because of the name, or because I'm a fan of the series, because It will feel nice to have some sort of decent racer that I can carry around with me when there's nothing to play at the moment.

And for the record I found a factory sealed PSP 2000 series.....you can fill in the blanks

happyface5359d ago (Edited 5359d ago )

After GT psp and GT prologue review scores its hard to say if Gran Turismo is still a AAA franchise. I have a feeling GT5 wont be getting high reviews (9 or better ) either.

edit: Wow, GT4 wasn't AAA either on metacritic. So their last 3 games have failed to live up to their first 3 games and each one keeps dropping more and more

thor5359d ago

Exactly my view.

Others will point out the fact that neither of those games were "full" experiences.

But I say that the poor reviews of both games indicate that Polyphony's standards are slipping. It shows that just because it's Gran Turismo it might not turn out that great. They're not the perfectionists many thought they were; they simply take a lot of time to do what they do because they're not actually very good.

happyface5359d ago

I think they are good devs, just have their priorities wrong. They waste too much time modeling lots of cars instead of putting time into the actual game.

negative comments from you on anything ps3 related, it's hard to take your comments seriously. it's like 1up reviewing warhawk with points deducted for not having single player but knowing full well the game wouldn't release with single player.

also, gt5p is a sample of a full game. not the full gt5 release.is rally in gt5p? is nascar in gt5p? wake us up when you know better.

SoapShoes5359d ago

What are you talking about? Most reviews peg it at the 80% range, that is far above "poor". Basically the game is great, but some don't like the game being tailored for a handheld. Fine, that's absolutely fine, but if you want a great racing game this is as good as it gets on PSP.

Do you honestly think a game limited to PSP hardware and a prologue is some indicator of GT5? All you have to do is look at the history of the franchise to know that is not true. GT4: Prologue got average reviews but the final game got very high reviews just like the ones before it. The fact that GT4: Prologue did not have a career mode or tuning did not effect the final game which did.

a gran turismo game.
I hope there will soon be a price cut for that "half gt game". :)

butterfinger5359d ago

I'm hoping that Forza 3 will be around $25 dollars since it will have less than half the cars of Gran Turismo 5. I mean, it's only logical.

kasasensei5359d ago

You are funny. :)
People are waiting for a "gran turismo" game when they look to buy "gran turismo psp", which it is not*.
But, when they are looking after forza3, they are looking for a great game like forza2 was, but with even better things in it, you know... Better (and new) cars, more (and new) tracks, lot of tuning possibilities (mechanical parts, stickers, colors, racing kits...)
Forza3 wont disappoint people that are looking for a forzalike game. ;)

(*read the reviews, especially the cons and come back when it's done to apologize about your remark)

butterfinger5359d ago

it looks like Forza 2 still to me. I think I'll just stick with that until the price comes down to about $12.99 like Forza 2's price.

kasasensei5359d ago

I see that you dont have argument anymore. :)

butterfinger5359d ago

with blind fanboyism. You can thank Sony and Polyphony Digital for their even being a Forza series to begin with, though.
