Activision has released the first 4 screenshots for Tony Hawk's Proving, which is set to be released on the Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii and DS.
Ninty’s clamshell handheld turns 10: here’s a look at some of the best adrenaline pumping games from the back catalogue.
G4TV's Sterling McGarvery Writes:
I still remember the Sunday afternoon in October 1999 when I caught a subway to a Blockbuster Video to rent Tony Hawk's Pro Skater based on a neighbor's recommendation. Little did I realize that it would spark a love affair that would start before the Birdman Bandwagon fired up and would last well beyond the point at which "Downhill Jam" wasn't just a spin-off, it was a pithy descriptor of the series.
PS University writes "Our Top 8 lists make a triumphant return this week and I've decided to do this one up a little differently than normal. While most of our readers cry about how we never included other consoles exclusive titles, we're going to do so now. We may represent PlayStation, but I guess it's only fair to let the other guy compete for our spots in the Top 8 countdown. We're also going to start listing the Top 8 in reverse order and start off at number 8. This Top 8 is all about those franchises that have been going on for a little bit too long now and it's about time the developer and publisher behind the title give it a rest. It's almost as though the team behind the scenes aren't comfortable creating something new and fresh this generation and instead look forward to feeding us the same title we've been playing for the last 10 to 15 years.
Chances are, if you're a gamer and you have a favorite franchise, this list will piss you off and I think that's just something you need to deal with on a personal level. When it gets to the point that you're trying to shove soda down our throats while advertising a game that has already had far too many iterations as it is, it goes too far. When we walk into a retail outlet and the opportunity to buy clothes for your over-produced titles is there, it's time to think of a new IP. Let's try and push gaming forward with something new and exciting. Watching a video game legend have to wear hand me downs year after year is getting a little tiring. If you don't understand the point of the list by now, you're a lost gamer. So without much else to say, let's start the list."
Is anyone suprised that Halo and Mario are on this list?
Honestly I want Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon to die unless
Naughty Dog gets the rights back and actually make a good Crash game
again, and same complaint for Spyro with Insomniac Games
These companies are ruining the Crash and Spyro series, give them
back to their creators :-/
I'm all for a few new IP myself too-and though I've been a Resi fan from the first moments of the series I'm sure it needs to be at least put away, if not killed off after changing beyond all recognition over the past two games AND going all crap in RE5, killing off it's best, most iconic character and running away from the SH genre while doing nothing to embrace it's new found action direction(i.e if you wanna be an action game chnage the controls and if you wanna be Resi provide some scares and , above all, stop with trying MP til your game suits it).
Too many issues, too much water under the bridge and I just wish now that RE4 had been allowed to be it's glorious swansong rather than RE5 propelling the series towards a nondescript and tawdry end. Shoot it like a mangey dog!
Wow Mastiff, no clue why but I completely let Resident Evil slip my mind. I couldn't agree more. I felt the same way as you about the last two titles. They changed the franchise entirely and while both were good games in their own right, they didn't feel like "Resident Evil" anymore.
Dumb article. No game franchise needs to die. As long as people enjoy the games what does it matter if they make 10 or 100? Honestly, you just write these articles to stir up controversy to get hits on your lame ass site, right?
Actually, I write them because I enjoy writing them. I also enjoy seeing how other people would change a list or what titles they'd include themselves. Not everything has to be hardcore news, trailers, reviews and previews.
Lightened discussion about gaming topics like this are a nice change of pace and create good discussion sometimes. If it's not your cup of tea, just don't read it. You're obviously not the demographic I'm trying to reach with my Top 8 lists. They're not for everyone, but that doesn't make them "dumb" or anything else.
They're here for entertainment purposes, which is why they're listed as "articles" and not news. If you can't enjoy something for what it is, that's your own problem.
FINAL FANTASY ANYONE?
After 13 main games, numerous remales, portables and films..
I believe the series deserves a quick clean death.
insomniac sold the spyro franchise but they're still makin awesome platformer games now with ratchet & clank. tools of destruction is dope (just started playin it) and i cant wait to pick up a crack in time.
as for crash, same story. naughty dog sold crash and we now have uncharted which is IMO the best new franchise of this gen. i wouldnt say no to a PS3 crash game made by naughty dog but as long as they keep bringin awesome NEW games, its all good for us players.
You're damn right I'm not the demographic you're trying to reach. These type of articles only cause fanboy wars or are just plain dumb. Maybe you or people who read these articles should realize that maybe they have a favorite game that may never see a sequel again. How about you try and convince them a franchise needs to die? Tell that to Shenmue fans or Chrono Trigger fans. Hell, I can think of a bunch of games I may never see a sequel too again. And honestly, we see about 15 articles a week with a top ten this, or a top 5 that, it gets boring. Write about something useful.
1. Finish Peace Walker
2. Cancel Rising
3. NO MORE AC!D GAMES
4. Make a game about Zanzibarland (Solid Snake vs. Big Boss)
5. End the series
This would complete the entire series and answer all the questions that still need to be answered without truely milking it. Rising, from what I've heard, is just a filler that is not needed at all. Plus, I just want to see Grey Fox blow up in a mine field!!! xD
The new Super Mario is the only game on the Wii that I wish I could play.
Halo / GTA rakes in to much money to die anytime soon.
Metal Gear should have stopped at 4. No Kajimi = no true Metal Gear
Tomb Raider is on its death bed, especially with the Uncharted series stepping it up.
"I'll write a Top 8 Games that Deserve a Sequel tomorrow for you ;)"
It's already been done....numerous times.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by this, do you mean the games are getting bad so they should die off? or they are just getting old and too many games? well either way I would say that sonic should die off already, I mean i'm going to give him one more chance with this new 2D sonic but all of his games since 2000 have been awful, and a new sonic game has came out almost like one a year, but they have all been bad so I don't see how Sonic didn't make the list.
The list is pretty good and although from a PS site its not biased which is good to see as it has the MGS series on their.
Sonic needs to die.
Final Fantasy is different though. Versus will hopefully revitalize the franchise with it's gameplay and mature blah blah. Kingdom Hearts gameplay FTW!
Good thing there was no more FFX-2 sequel... that was just lame.
Why is Final Fantasy not on the list?
I know they all have different stories, but they are all just as gay.
Normally I would disagree with that. But with each new final fantasy that main character looks more and more like a chick. So I'm going to have to agree.
aye,
havnt seen a good FF since FFX. x-2 (which the main was actually a girl), FFXI,FFXII all were... stupendous.
if FFXIII n FFXIII vs dont save SQ nothing can. I'mma boycott if they screw these up. I cant wait for another 10 years for them to pull crappy FF games out of their asses.
Madden needs to go too =/ but i guess its the best football franchise around.. so its kewl.
I disagree with MGS series.
Even though the story of Solid Snake has been covered we got alot of story holes I'd like to get filled up from The Big Boss etc etc. and i hope it comes to next-gen consoles, i dont like PSP mgs -.-
no one talks about ff like that its the best rpg game ever
the best ff game is ffvii then ffiv i hope that ffiv:the after years come out soon, thanks.
I am starting to agree with that FF should stop now but if S-E just released another RPG what would be the difference?? It would only sell less nothing more. So they will stick the FF name on it and use it to sell like hotcakes. FF name is no more than a branding nowadays its not a series like all the other franchises on the list.
I agree, but some of those games contain classic gameplay elements or characters that make the fans keep picking it up. In a away, they are keeping gaming alive. Pokemon should of been on that list too.
You could say FF but they're all different games.
I was going to include Pokemon, but wanted to really limit this to console-specific titles -- and felt Pokemon is more of a handheld production (though I know they do have some console titles).
Final Fantasy wasn't included because of the fact each game could be titled differently and it would still sell and make sense. If FF was 15 continuous sequels with the same characters like the titles mentioned in the list, it would have came in at #1 or #2 easily.
ah point taken. I guess its not really a franchise vs just a title to put on like saying Kojima Productions... in a way
I was hoping that MGS would die with MGS4. The game is best at what it does and the best ending for all the great characters.
I hate the fact that there is a MGS:R. Those of you that have played MGS4 would understand that a new MGS is not needed.
I hope its a prequel to MGS4, that way it still wouldn't ruin the MGS4 ending.
I'm pretty sure it is a prequel.
I agree with you though. They should have at least dropped the "Solid" and started a new Metal Gear series without Kojima. I feel like they have him locked in a cage over there and only feed him if he gives them more Metal Gear.
I would say RE should just die off, it is just a mere shell of what it was, the core game play and atmosphere are gone and is just another action shooter. I would also say Sonic belongs on that list. And even though GTA IV was garbage I don't think GTA should be on the list nor should MGS.

So -- This either means that you want us to die after about 147 other sites do or we're too low of a priority to worry about.
Either one is cool ;)
Think flies at a picnic and you'll get the picture...
Also this will most certainly help:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
I'm happy if Mario Die, really I hate him is everywhere in every N game, I expect more dignity from a whore...
What a bad list. Once a series starts to lose quality, then it is too long. come back when mario games stop being a blast
they put mario on there but not sonic the hedgehog that game franchise perfectly fits your descrption a whored out franchise that lost its quality years ago i mean really sonic hasnt been in a good game in almost TEN YEARS and seeing how many sonic games we've seen in that time period thats saying alot, sonic is on life support but its time to pull the plug.
Mario and Halo will never die because those games is what sells both the Xbox and Nintendo consoles, they literally made the Xbox/Nintendo platform what it is today and to an extent I think both M$ and Nintendo are very dependent on their mascot franchises, so I don't ever seeing them go away.
The GTA series is getting a little stale to me because GTA4 just got boring so quickly, but a future GTA game that had everything San Andreas had and more OUT OF THE BOX (not added in via DLC), would be more than enough to reinvigorate my past love for the franchise.
The Storylines in the MGS series to me are just too amazing and memorable to just kill off the franchise anytime soon.... I'd love to see MGS live on for many, many years to come. The Stealth genre is almost non-existent this gen., so I have to get my "Tactical Espionage Action" fix somehow, and MGS gives me that... I doubt Rising will be a "Tactical Espionage" Stealth game, but at least I can count on Peace Walker.
Halo.
Please Microsoft, stop bombarding us with crappy Halo games, we all know the 1 and only reason you keep making them is because you know it makes you lots of money, want to work on something good? put more effort into Fable. Fable II, now THAT was a great video game :)
Street Fighter should die now.
edit: also dance dance revolution should and guitar games should die
You realize that DDR is probably going to come back huge with Natal.
I'm blaming it on you if it happens.
I do agree with the MGS series. Snake's story is over. No need for fillers or wannabe Gray Fox's.
Just carry on my MEME. It is all I ask for
Well both of your brothers are gone, so I don't know how far Metal Gear can go without them we'll see how well your father and your son can hold up
I agree with most of that list. I know everyone has their own taste and are still enjoying those games so they are going nowhere for a while yet. I just don't care much for them myself. Just like everyone's obssession with X-factor and how I never want to hear of it again!
Mario shouldn't be on the list. You have to actually suck in order to be on a list like this.
Really GTA, MGS, GH all used to be Playstation exclusive and came or r soon to come to xbox. Halo and mario are other console exclusives and the other franchises arent PS3 exclusives either. Shocker. I remember the days news was never biased(not really)
Wtf are you talking about? Yes, some of these games used to be exclusive. & That's what made them so great IN THE PAST. Great games are ruined when they go multi-plat. The reason developers go multi-plat is to rake in the cash, not please us.
I really wouldnt mind a new pixelated mario game...go back to the basics.
I dont know about other people but I dont like that new super mario bros and mario playing basketball etc.
a super mario bros 3 style game with tons of new levels and enemies wouldnt hurt for me.
...falling in love with the MGS series. I mean I love the PS brand so much and maybe I just don't like that type of game (didn't love any splinter cell either) but I think that GOW 1/2, UC, SotC, etc. are better games. I think they control better than MGS 1-3 and I think MGS' story is way too overrated. I'd be cool with Kojima working on something different and Bungie working on something different as well.
A PS site wants to kill the main franchises for the other console makers... Who didnt see that one coming. but its ok for FF to have 30 something games in 20 years, It's completely wrong to have 1 Mario platformer a generation....Oh wait this gen we get 3 of them and 1 is completely different from the other 2. I think SMBWii is as different from SMG is as FF1 is from FF2. Oh well PS site so what more can you expect
List should be..
1. Guitar Hero
2. Madden
3. NFS
4. Final Fantasy
5. Rock Band
6. Sonic
7. Pokemon
8. COD
The yearly releases should be all over this list. Kinda makes me wonder if this guy is an actual gamer or just made the list to take shots at Halo and Mario
If you take the word 'fanboy' out of your post you basically just say "I disagree...here is my list".
It is actually a much more compelling read that way...just so you know.
Could you please show me where "fanboy" is anywhere in my post? I reread it twice. never saw it once.
I've noticed when talking about Mario that "Super Mario" was mentioned rather than just plain Mario on the title. Interesting. Just saying.
Killing of top tier franchises that have shown very little low quality rather than franchise that have truly seen better days, and need to be kill in cold blood for the sake of what's left of the good reputation it had (Sonic the Hedgehog is a perfect example).
Teh. But whatever, I can't really take this article seriously after seeing where it came from.
Why do popular game series that sell well need to die? If people buy them, it means that people like them. Supply & demand.
Shi**y, opinionated list.
First of, by your logic FF should be on top, lulz. Second of all, Mario should die, but no Sonic? wow.
now TR games get better and better since 2006's Legend. I'd say more like Lara Croft today is everything she should've been in the 90s.. and last I checked there's practically no exploration in that TR clone you've mentioned. no plausible puzzles either. Not to mention that the next TR is going to be a reboot.
Mario and Gaylo for need to be put down, there nothing in the franchise we haven't seen
FF should definitely be there. I'm a fan of the series, but now the name is nothing more than an obvious cash cow for stories that are only tangentially linked at best.
@Rmagnus
Of course I did. And I enjoy most of the games which make up the series as it is today. But my point is I don't want the series to devolve into Final Fantasy XXVIII§: Crystal Babies. I played FF11 for 3+ years only to have it forgotten about by SE for a new mmo with the FF name slapped on it. Let's be honest - the name "rapture" wouldn't get half the players that "Final Fantasy 14" would get - and it doesn't even have most of the class types which have been seen since early FF games (the FF11 classes were included but basically as just a marketing gimmick).
" Final Fantasy wasn't included because of the fact each game could be titled differently and it would still sell and make sense. "
No it would not. Chrono Trigger was basically FF, but 6 outsold it 4:1.
Letting final fantasy die is utter nonsense. Its a million seller.
Also FF is a lose concept. No sequel has to be anything like the previous game. Up to square and peoples expectations really.
I totally agree with that list besides tombraider and mario.
While i hate mario games i have to admit he is too damn iconic of a character to let him die. Also games have always been decent. Think of all the weeping japanese kids before you kill him off :p
shouldnt just be WAW COD should be COD period...and every other game in the beyond ran into the ground played out FPS genre.....its all been done same stuff different day
I wasn't surprised to see Halo on this list from a site called PLAYSTATIONUNIVERSITY.COM, but okay?
i'm freaking sick and tired of mario. i've been around since his inception and all i see is him being whored out for any type of gimmick out in the planet. i think he has literally been in over 100 hundreds of games.
for me, mgs needs to continue just a little longer. i think mgs1,mgs2, mgs3, and mgs4 are the main titles of the mgs series and the rest are just spin offs (even though portable ops is canon.)
we definitely need more halo, but is has to go through a lot of enhancements and upgrades in the engine before i start liking it again.
1. Sonic
2. Sonic
3. Sonic
4. Spyro
5. Crash
6. Halo
7. Guitar Hero
8. WWII CoD
Agree/Disagree?
(1-3) Don't stop sonic yet. Wait till Sonic 4 comes out, then do as you please.
(4-5) Sure, they have been bad since Insomniac/Naughty Dog left.
(6) *sigh*
(7) Without GH, Rock Bands quality will decrease.
(8) CoD games during WWII are already dead. Infinity Ward has Modern Warfare and Treyarch is making a Cold War - CoD game. Because 1 CoD game comes out every year and MW3 should be a PS4/720 launch title, it will be a while before you see a CoD game set during WWII.
I know this article (same one I read two years ago) should be on that list. The only difference in most of these Top Whatever articles is the number representing the article. Can sites like this at least attempt to be original?
Ok course they want Halo and Super Mario killed. Those franchises are brutalizing the PS.
How about no more Final Fantasy?
I hear it more often now on the internet about people talking about franchises getting milked and them deserving to die. The franchise doesn't deserve to die if the games remain fresh. I enjoyed the RTS Halo Wars and ODST's different perspective, every single GTA and Metal Gear have improved over the last one and there are so many stories to be told in both of those games universes. A Mario RPG was just released and a new "Back to basics" Super Mario Bros. is being released soon. And honestly even if I didn't like Mario, I wouldn't want him to die, he is an icon for video games just like Mickey Mouse to animated films.
Okay, maybe Halo doesn't need to COMPLETELY die. But it would be nice if we didn't get THREE Halo games in the space of a year and a half. Seriously? At this rate, Halo will become no different than Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, and the EA sporta games.
Microsoft are trying so hard to shove Halo down everybody's throats, when they SHOULD be trying to get more first-party studios so that they can get more exclusives and new IPs. And no, I don't mean 360 exclusive as in a downgraded port of a PC game. I mean the real 360 exclusives, like PGR, Forza and Fable.
That's the difference between Sony and Microsoft. No, the PS3 doesn't have one franchise that's as ridiculously popular as Halo (except maybe Gran Turismo), but at the same time it doesn't live or die on one game. Even if a new LBP game wasn't made until 2020, there would still be Resistance, Killzone, Uncharted, R&C, MotorStorm... Even Nintendo have Metroid, Zelda, F-Zero and Star Fox.
But with Micosoft, it seems that it's just going to be Halo Halo Halo from here on out.
Resitance...Flop
Killzone....Flop
Your other mentions are good exclusives.
Xbox 360:
Mass Effect
Splinter Cell
Crackdown
Alan Wake
Fable
Forza
Gears of War
I don't see how these aren't good exclusives. I even left out LfD2.
And if we are going to talk about old recycled games getting shoved down our throats lets talk about God of War. The first two games were exactly the same game with a little better graphics from 1 to 2.
Do you really think GoW3 is going to be any different? No it wont. Plus they are "shoveling" the first two games in a set to you for PS3, and do you really think its not about the the money?
At least ODST is new and different.
"Top 8 Gaming Franchises that Need to Die" jeez a little harsh gta4 may have not been the best one in the series but it was still a good game.and Mario wont be going any where,do you really want to live in a world with no Mario i mean i grew up with Mario and I'm sure a lot of people have, out of a lot of games i can still go back and play Mario and have some fun, that new Mario game looks really good to me the one that's in the classic Mario style. But i do want new ips just like everyone else. and I'm just going to add ... DEMON'S SOULS RULES!!!!!
Seriously, what did this guy do? Pick the top eight non-football related franchises and say "HURR, TOO MANY SEQUELS!!!1"?
HALO!? GTA?!
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHA
I can't believe this website....................... ......oh..................wait a sec........................... .PLAYSTATION website....................... ........HAHAHAHAH.
No wonder you're bit*hing about those titles cause you lost most of them as exclusives to the XBOX 360, so seriously stop bit*hing.
To the editor of this article: you are a DUMBASS that shouldn't be writing anything relevant about video games. Ever. Go die. Now.
The sad thing is that these franchises dont affect him in any way.
People still enjoy those titles, regardless of his reasoning.
Perhaps he should die?! =D
I try and read the write up and a pop up comes up and it sends me to some google page with dell on it, lol???? Tried 4 times, said forget it.
Sorry, we couldn't find http://static.addtoany/menu... Here are some related websites:
Why do any gaming franchises "need to die" anyway?
If you don't like a particular game or type of game then just don't bother with it and only play the ones you do like.
If a franchise is still up and running then obviously some people out there are buying it and enjoying it so leave it to them and concentrate on the ones you want.
There are plenty of games I don't like; I don't buy them, I don't play them, so they really don't bother me. Some other people obviously do like them though so I don't see why I'd have the right to start saying they are finished.
There's so many different games out, and coming out that I really don't get the mentality of people who bother complaining about the ones they don't like!
I'm starting to wonder if any of the people saying Final Fantasy should be on the list have actually played the games. They all have different stories and different settings for the most part. Final Fantasy is more like a brand name than a franchise.
I am truly sick and tired of reading uninformed articles by illiterate pseudo journalist inciting flame-bait hysteria thus provoking socially and emotionally stunted fan-boys into "my console is better than your console" battles simply to get web hits.
But I am furious when people complain about GTA IV having none of the fluff that was on San Andreas.
San Andreas was the 3rd iteration of a game engine (GTA III, GTA: Vice City then and GTA San Andreas). By the time they'd got to San Andreas they had perfected the game engine and were reduced to increasing the game map and adding bits of fluff to make it different. Do you really need to spend hours picking out clothes for your character or do you want to build your empire and kill your enemies? Would you rather spend your hours bashing a button in an imaginary gym or would you prefer to drive at 150mph while weaving through traffic?
GTA IV is a COMPLETELY new game engine and as such they have concentrated on the most important stuff, making the game work, making the characters believable, making AI interaction work, and creating the most beautiful city in which to shoot, stab, punch and drive.
When GTA IV: Chicago/Miami/London/Paris/Pok ipsee or wherever comes out it will have some of the fluff you're so clearly missing, like a child at Christmas complaining because the expensive bike they was give didn’t have spoke reflectors, so learn to see what GTA IV is really about and stop whining because you can’t buy your character a pink puffa jacket!
I for one have repeatedly played GTA IV and enjoyed it every time! I look forward to the next game with the same anticipation that I had for this one and if GTA IV is anything to go by then the series is in very good hands!
I agree completely, GTAIV for me is the best GTA, hands down. Not just because of the graphics and physics, but the superior gameplay and storyline.
unless it has started producing bad games. You can't tell Mario to die if all of the Mario platformers are still extremely good - same with GTA, MGS and other ones too..
If you are bored from these games on your list then DON'T buy them!
You might did not notice but since we got in this new generation, it brought with it new IPs (Gears of War, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Modern Warfare). It is not like you are restricted to buy old franchises!
And on defending old franchises: Imagine if MGS:Peace Walker/Rising were the last titles on MGS universe and lets skip 10 years agead, that's when PS5 or X-Box1080 comes out and alot of new super IPs come out and they are great and all but what about us, old gamers who kept the gaming community alive since the days of NES or even before? I lived with Snake and Mario and I can't abandon them or the makers behind them. Every time I see a character or game I love, to me it feel like a reunion with an old pal of yours. If these franchises ever died then I might as well step away from gaming.
I agree every gen needs new version of the last gens classic games. I have no problem with more MGS or Mario's. I agree with a dude above though. The Resident Evil series just needs to say goodbye. Or at the very least go back to its roots and be scary again.
I would LOVE for any of Activisions series to die because they quite frankly are overrated, over hyped, generic and are milked every year. Yes COD series is complete generic crap. I cant stand this series more than any gaming series to date.
Super mario???? So are you saying games like mario galaxy are bad for the industy?? what a shmuck
Looks a bit dull to me. Activision just negate releasing one year and put that time towards making a truly great game. Surely the environments can look a lot better than this?
I just hope that the wii version isn't identical to the PS2 version.
They should make a Tony Hawks movie, that would be cool.
skate is the game to buy out if this genre to me.........
I gave up on skating games a long time ago, and this only reinforces that decision. Thanks, Activision.
I wonder why it doesn't surprise me that this just doesn't impress me. O, i know. Activision has decided to put out the essentially same game for the past 4 years.
Way to go Activision.
