IGN UK NFS Shift Review

7.5 - Presentation
While the art design is good there's simply too much going on, and the loading times can test the patience.

9.5 - Graphics
With DiRT 2, Forza 3 and GT5 we're running out of superlatives for racing game's visuals, but this deserves some of its own. In a word, stunning.

9.0 - Sound
Engine notes are wonderfully guttural, and the voiceover's nicely understated - while the music is typical Need for Speed fare.

8.5 - Gameplay
On track it's superb, with handling that offers a nicely exaggerated take on a sim model - but it's sometimes lost under the myriad scoring systems.

8.5 - Lasting Appeal
The single-player's meaty and the multiplayer is considered and well implemented, offering local leaderboards and eight-player races.

I would have thought ad lest 9.5, shift looks good, but must lack the physics engine that Forza 3 has? :)

locos855361d ago

And you've played Forza 3 to know how the physics engine plays?

Milky5361d ago

Isn't this made by the Burnout guys? I might get it if it is.

soxfan20055361d ago

"And you've played Forza 3 to know how the physics engine plays?"

This is N4G - actually playing the games is not required to draw conclusions about games, like the recent game of the year predictions by certain people.

DelbertGrady5361d ago

Slightly Mad Studios — who, under their former name Blimey! Games helped develop GT Legends and GTR 2 together with SimBin Studios—with help of Michael Mann (EP at EA Black Box) and Patrick Söderlund (senior VP of EA Games and head of DICE).

It's made by people from Blimey! and SimBin. Can't go wrong there.

Cwalat5361d ago

My thoughts and personal predictions on the racing games this fall-winter-2010 and what style they have.

I can't possibly know how NFS, Gran Turismo 5, F1 2010 & Forza 3 will end up like but these predictions are from playing previous titles of the franchises and watching/reading previews or interviews.

Dirt 2 - Sim/Rally/Arcade (8.0-9.0 overall)
NFS Shift - Sim/Arcade (8.5-9.0 overall)
Forza 3 - Sim/Race (9.0-9.5 overall +points on physics)
Gran Turismo 5 - Sim/Driving/Race (9.0-10 overall +points on physics)
F1 2010 - Sim/Race (8.5-9.5 overall)

Colin McRae Dirt 2: was one of those regular Rally games and it had nothing extra that you didn't already know about, just a smaller roster of car selection. The feel is just the same as Dirt 1 with slight improvements on physics part of the gameplay. Much better graphics and superb lightning. Some cars have oversteering, but not noticeable if you're used to this type of style, which is Rally.

NFS Shift: looks to be like THE comeback of NFS series with great car lineup and new racing/sim feel. Everything is put to focus on bringing the driver-feel to the game which is very welcoming. It doesn't take the simulator to any new levels but still manages to keep that serious feel of racing games. The tracks are specifically built for tactical racing instead of typical full throttle all the way, throw in ultimate car challenges with classical one-to-one battles and you're all set. Great title. Greater comeback.

Forza 3 and F1 2010: will probably take the simulator implementation one extra step further but the emphesis is still on that racing feel that we love so much in these series. Forza 3 has one of the best physics implementations to driving games since beginning of physics implementations in driving games (=P). The level of customization is unmatched and really keeps you going for hours upon hours, but some think that's not what racing games are about. With visuals surpassing almost every racing game out there, it's pretty hard not to buy this one. F1 doesn't even need to be mentioned it's a beast title and alot of people have been waiting, i believe it will top everyones expectations from top-bottom. Hopefully it won't get released too late into 2010.

Gran Turismo 5: man o man! My personal favorite and i believe it will be the king of all racing games. Along with Forza 3, Gran Turismo 5 has unmatched physics system and level of detail is also never before seen in any other racing game. Words cannot describe how much i've been waiting for this title. Only time will tell if it's really coming out this year or not. Without a doubt my most anticipated racer since GT4.

"The feel is just the same as Dirt 1 with slight improvements on physics part of the gameplay."

RUBBISH. They are chalk and cheese. DiRT2 feels nothing like D1.

Cwalat5361d ago

@Daves

read carefully before you call it RUBBISH.

"My thoughts and pred...."

I've played em both so i think i can decide that by myself, and yep still think they are the same, but again Dirt 2 has slightly better physics.

Disccordia5361d ago

Criterion (Burnout Devs) are making the NFS game that will release next year and Black Box are developing the 2011 release.

Hmm, I'm still getting both DiRT 2 and Shift. They're different games, and we all like different things.

locos855361d ago

I played dirt 2 demo, but I couldn't stay on the track. Rally isn't my thing, but nice game.

DelbertGrady5361d ago

So many great racing games this year. I think I'm going to get both as well.

Perkel5361d ago (Edited 5361d ago )

"There's one area where Need for Speed Shift soundly trumps the competition: its driving is an exceptionally visceral experience, with a sensation of sheer velocity that's unparalleled in the genre. Take a car to its limits and the engine bark shakes the chassis, the colour drains from the screen and the c0ckpit blurs, focusing the driver's attention on the thin ribbon of tarmac ahead. "

No thank you , i don't like fantasy games... ;) Hmm i think Burnout Paradise Trumps all competition in those terms.

btw best year for driving games all times.. :)

gt , forza, nfs, shift, dirt2 ;)

lol @ c0ckpit .. seriously , n4g staff get over with it ;)

Clarence Callahan5361d ago

Good Job EA, for re-igniting the NFS series (more or less :P), now let's hope the next game will be with cops, lol (<i'm serious!)

morkendo5361d ago

next need for speed will have COPS!!! criterion IS MAKING IT!!!! YAHOOOOO-IEEEE might be hotpursuit 3 or highstakes 2

EA is doing what they said, bringing us good titles....

Need for Speed: Carbon, Undercover, and More to Be Removed from Digital Storefronts

EA has announced that Need for Speed Carbon, Need for Speed Undercover, Need for Speed Shift, Need for Speed Shift 2: Unleashed, and Need for Speed The Run will be removed from digital storefronts beginning today, May 31.

Kombatologist1080d ago

From a preservation standpoint, this is the one thing I hate about digital games. And things will get much worse if game streaming becomes the norm.

darthv721080d ago

The games are already preserved. Hence their existence on the digital stores to begin with. This is no different than when Disney put movies in the vault, only to bring them back years later.

spwittbold1080d ago

Not true. Mass Effect re-release trilogy did not have some of the DLC content specifically because the contractor that played a major role in it's development did not preserve it, nor did Bioware.

thejigisup1079d ago

Any idea of when marvel vs capcom 2 is coming back? That's my favorite game of all time and I can't use it on my ps3 as the file is corrupt and can't find an official dualshock or sixaxis to rebuild the database in safe mode. It's really frustrating that I can't use something I paid for that I expected to have forever.

DOMination-1079d ago

At least it is available digitally. They give you a warning, and if you purchase it, then you will still always have access to it. They will also make it available again one day when it makes sense, but right now I imagine that <100 a day play these games.

Good luck buying Need for Speed: Carbon brand new from a store.

All games have a shelf life. These games are three generations old and had massive circulation. I don't think it is EAs problem if you haven't picked them up by now.

Sgt_Slaughter1079d ago

Why defend EA's bad business practice? There's no way to spin this, it's just bad.

Retroman1080d ago (Edited 1080d ago )

NFS Undercover, Carbon,Prostreets, Rivals, 2015 Reboot, Payback , 2012 Mostwanted was no good, far as I'm concerned they can remove Heat too . it doesn't matter anymore if Ea remove them they "All" crap.
Ea went down hill after Blackbox studio left.
Ghost did not improved NFS , Criterion did nothing better and here they are back to screw NFS again. 2022 will be another flop as the first title they made (Burnout for Speed)

DarXyde1080d ago

Not a fan of those games either, but I think you miss the point: even if someone—for whatever reason—wants to buy those games digitally, they can't. And the transition toward digital platforms makes the issue that much worse. Nevermind buying physical at outrageous prices from online sellers, you literally can't play them if you have an all-digital device.

Kombatologist is exactly right: it is an issue from the perspective of preservation that is likely to get worse with the rise of streaming.

Retroman1079d ago

Ah, no. I did Not missed the point. I spoke my personal opinion on those craptastic titles.
Why would anyone in there right mind but those title's Digitally??.......there is a website you can still buy those games around 19.99 I bought the Ratchet and Clank Trilogy PS3 for 19.99 Amazon and EBay price 79.99 wish I remember the name of the site.

strayanalog1080d ago

I wonder what Need for Speed said a decade ago on twitter.

1080d ago
Profchaos1080d ago

I own some of these games does that mean I can no longer download them? Or just purchase?

boing11079d ago

Removed from storefronts so my guess is it's only about digital purchase.

Most wanted 2012 imo was awful, on PS3 the graphics are dreadful, and the crash cam was very annoying. Rival is the worst imo, hated that game. My favourite is Hot Pursuit, great game. Also Shift 1&2 are really good.

OnlyThoseOnTheFence1742d ago

High Stakes will always be my favorite. Great cars, great music, and you could see through the windows which was pretty mind-blowing at the time. Best of all it was ricer-free.

steven83r1742d ago

Lame. The list doesn't even include any of the originals. NFS 1 and NFS hot Pursuit 1998. Must be a youngster who created the list.

CYALTR1741d ago

He clearly stated that being this was an Xbox centered site he was going to limit his list to games that released on some form of Xbox. He also stated he had been playing them since OG PLaystation, so pretty sure he's not a "youngster"

Retroman1742d ago (Edited 1742d ago )

From my personal experience NFS I personally don't like.......
The Worst : Underground 2 , Carbon, Prostreets, Undercover, Porche unleashed, Nitro, NFS World, 2012 Mostwanted, Rivals, 2015 Reboot last but not least Paycrap.
Best NFS I personally like :
All ps1 NFS : HighStakes (the best) including NFS 3 Hotpursuit , ps2 Hotpursuit 2 (Excellent game ) ..Underground ( Best so far)
2005 Mostwanted ( Excellent game) Shift 1/2 (Spectacular) remind me of GT , 2010 Hotpursuit Great game but race Waaaaaaay to long in my personal opinion . Last but not least The Run . these are my favorite NFS titles .
After The Run in my personal opinion NFS went down hill fast with Open world mapping crap, always online, multiplayer crap, alldrive, drifting in every freaking corners, no gripping anymore, autolog. None of this crapfest is NFS original formula. until Ea contract Ghost Games to return the original formula back in NFS it will always be Shitty game.
