Is Batman: Arkham Asylum Overrated?

Batman: Arkham Asylum's score in the upper 90% from many reviewers, implies that it is of the calibre of such titles as Metal Gear Solid, Gears of War, Mario Galaxy and Resident Evil.

BAA is a very good game, a game that any Batman fan will be happy with. Unfortunately such review score systems bring with them the misunderstanding that all gamers need to play this game. People with little interest in The Dark Knight universe may find themselves baffled at how this game could find itself in the company of Half-Life and Grand Theft Auto.

I don't think it is. It's a very good game and definitely amongst the best this year. Great job rocksteady.

josuttis5370d ago

Good game. Among the year's best? No way.

Very nice art and presentation.

Horrible graphics. The character models all look like rigid pieces of shiny plastic. And it has that irritating every thing out of the foreground smeared with Vaseline blur going on to cover up the lack of detail in the scenes

The cut scenes's character animation voice acting and animation are laughably bad.

The fighting is primitive and unremarkable.

The rest of the game is just a colectathon.

Rental or wait for it to drop in price. You pretty much just plod through the game until the end.

The silly gaming media hype for the game reminds me of the laughably absurd GTA4 reviews and stories.

raztad5370d ago (Edited 5370d ago )

@josut

You made a very accurate description of the UE3 in action.

I feel that Batman:AA is overrated as well, the combat is way too simple but in no way this game is overrated in the same level of GTA4.

G3TDOWN5370d ago

I like the game though !

Anything between 8.0 to 8.9

wUTTer5370d ago

It deserves all the attention it's been getting, but to say it's GOTY, I'm not sure about that.

Uncharted 2 is already guaranteed '09 and after that Heavy Rain '10.

NoBias5370d ago

My answer is no. That was innovative as hell. And freaky. The game is a LOT of fun.

Sev5370d ago

I don't think it's overrated. The variety and depth is amazing. Graphics aren't everything.

It's one of the most enjoyable video games I've ever played. And I normally hate superhero games.

Sarcasm5370d ago

This website isn't getting the point.

It's THE best Batman game of all time. And there are a LOT of Batman fans.

So obviously the non-Batman fans won't see all the hype.

Just like non-half-life fans won't see it's hype.

Or non-MGS fans won't see it's hype.

Or non-GTA fans won't see it's hype.

That's why we have different things in the world. Not everybody likes "ONE THING" and because one person doesn't like it, doesn't mean that something is "overrated" or "sucks" because you don't like it.

deadreckoning6665370d ago (Edited 5370d ago )

Its definitely overrated, but I wouldn't say its bad. Sarcasm hit it right on the head. Not everyone likes the same things. I'll use MGS4 and Mass Effect as an example. High review scores, yet many people didn't see what all the hype was about. Everyone is different and has different preferences.

PinkUni5370d ago

even if the gamplay isn't the best

what they've accomplished graphically, with all that detail is enough to give it the status that it has

5370d ago
Grown Folks Talk5370d ago

but a completely wasted point on this site. How dare somebody not think the same games are the best?

topdawg1225370d ago

This game is not overrated at all. I'm not a huge batman fan or comic fan at all, but this game delivers on all fronts. Great story, gameplay, atmosphere, and it truly does make you feel like batman. Totally deserves to be rated as high as it is and anyone who gets a chance should really try it out.
Combat is a little easy, only thing i found wrong with it, but shouldn't deflect the score it deserves.

Jmlopezbr5370d ago

No it isn't. I actually feel like batman, and I love how when you die the boss you fought or the joker taunts you, I even killed myself a few times to see the scenes xD

Batman was a great game. I agree that the characters look a little unnatural, but at least when you play as Batman, its only his chin that is that way ^_^

and character designs were great. I loved how they changed the designs of the characters like Ivy and Scarecrow.

And I love how the joker in the joker dlc was a lot more challenging because he can't do as much as Batman can. But it didn't feel like I was the joker then >.> and I wish you could have kept the crazy glasses on

PandemicPrawn05370d ago

"a very good game and definitely amongst the best this year."

Not bad for that obsolete UE3 engine eh?

Arkham5370d ago

You're just a troll who doesn't like Batman.

In your case it's "2 strikes -- You're out."

Save your sophomoric analysis for the junior high cafeteria.

andron5370d ago

That's all that matters to me...

nnotdead5370d ago

i have only played the demo, and i liked it. the only thing i find strange is the fighting. a lot of people seem to really like the fighting, and i think its very similar to Assassins Creed(which i liked). i remember people really hating the combat in AC. going so far as naming combat as one of the main reasons why they disliked the game.

i could be way off base, not playing the full game yet, but i dont understand why this isnt getting brought up more.

Eddie201015370d ago

Well worth the price of admission, the Scare crow parts blew my mind. It is a triple A tittle, even if your not into BatMan.

Defectiv3_Detectiv35369d ago

Its a good game, but I think its only great for those people who are fans of batman/comics in general. I found it a little repetitive, personally, I'm holding out for NG2sigma instead, I really want to check out the co-op, and NG is more 'hardcore' shall we say...

ia_studio5369d ago

"Horrible graphics. The character models all look like rigid pieces of shiny plastic. And it has that irritating every thing out of the foreground smeared with Vaseline blur going on to cover up the lack of detail in the scenes"

"They have a very strange and unnatural look and design about them. Like they are carved out of a solid block. And the entire surface of characters all have that annoying shiny covering them.
"

It's based in a comic book god! it's incredibly stylised, and I f your not picking a game because of it's graphics you're trully not a gamer the game is fun.

Nikuma5369d ago (Edited 5369d ago )

I think it's an awesome game but my only gripe is that it seems almost to easy. I mean when you die the game basically tells you what to do to win, and for me that really takes away the satisfaction of beating a boss by figuring out what to do. When what to do is just spelled out for you there really isn't much accomplishment, for me anyway.

You Already Know5369d ago

Sarcasm....you assume he doesn't like the game because you didn't weeeead the article...

you're the one who doesn't get it..

the game got 9.2 overall scores like it's a classic that everyone must own...

a game like MGS4 is in that category....or inFAMOUS which received scores lower than Batman: AA at times..

he says the truth...and that's Batman AA is a great game, it's worth at least an 8.0 at worst, but shouldn't be considered in the league of say MGS4 or inFAMOUS...

raztad5369d ago

@above

I think you made a good point. inFAMOUS is a game that deserved to have an overall metacritic closer to 9 but it struggled to keep in the mid 8, why? because teh jaggiezz, teh repetitive == it is only on the PS3.

Batman on the other hand is multiplat (obvious advantage) and it is a good game but come on, 9.2? universal appeal? a truly classic? for sure it is overrated.

I enjoy the superior PS3 version with superior graphics and the exclusive FREE Joker DLC

MGSR THE HD VERSION5370d ago

"superior PS3 version"

that's not what IGN said.

kapedkrusader5370d ago

...under Turbographix 16 and Colecovision. Bias, maybe?

Trey4Lyfe5370d ago (Edited 5370d ago )

"If you have to choose between both versions, I'd go with the PS3 edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum."

http://ps3.ign.com/articles...

The welfare BOTS can't read, M$ should buy some time exclusive Hooked on phonics for the betabox360

7ero H3LL5370d ago (Edited 5370d ago )

360 version holds technical edge.

joker dlc is meh, http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Trey4Lyfe5370d ago

"Although we’re pretty sure you’re gonna be happy with buying Batman: Arkham Asylum on either console, we believe the PlayStation 3 is the better game even if it wasn’t a perfect win."

http://www.lensoftruth.com/...

Why so serious BOTS??????

Let's put a smile on that face!

MGSR THE HD VERSION5370d ago (Edited 5370d ago )

both use G@Y multiplayer DLC as a pore excuse for a win.

ps3 version better, lol.

ps3 needs a 1.3 gb mandatory installation.....why, what for?

ps3's version is lacking AA and SSAO, with screen tearing up the ass.

Trey4Lyfe5370d ago

lens of truth gave the Graphics Edge to PS3 :)

MGSR THE HD VERSION5370d ago

Game trailers, eurogamer, and IGN gave 360 version technical edge, 3 to 1.

and lends of truth's pics depicted 360's version to be better.

OmarJA5370d ago

IGN also said that GTAIV was better on the PS3...

LMAO!

Mo0eY5370d ago

MGSR's avatar holds true to his personality:
Whiney little b!tch.

Look dude, you can post those screenshots all day long if you'd like, but I could do the same for PS3 if I wanted to stare endlessly at PIXELS, ZEROES, AND ONES. In the end, it comes down to what's the value worth (and by value worth - I mean quality not crappy DLCs) for each game, and in this game, the PS3 is better thanks to the Joker DLC. Same goes for any multiplatform game - if they have more to offer, they caught my eye (unless it's a Wii game, a Halo game, or a GTA game).

BX815369d ago

Geez! Talk about being on a piece of plastics nuttz. You can't stay off of them for one comment. I'm sure your mom is proud of you.

foreverflame5369d ago (Edited 5369d ago )

I've i had more fun playing a Virtual boy then a PS3

AngryTypingGuy5369d ago

Nearly every source but Lens of Truth gave the graphical edge to the 360. After MGSR the HD Version posted all of those comparison pics, let me ask you people...WHAT DO YOUR OWN EYES tell you? The 360 version is clearly the better looking version.

If you have both consoles, the PS3 version would be the way to go because graphics aren't everything - the Joker levels give it the edge. But if you think the PS3 version offers better graphics, especially after looking at differences in the comparison pics, then you are clearly in denial.

What kind off crack are you taking did you forgot to take your meds

I outa slap you for saying sumthing like that

DRIIV5370d ago

you do know that there is a a reply button that you use to reply to comments like Saaking's. And know to be more on topic, the joker being a free DLC does make it better in my opinion, and GI gave the PS3 version the edge.

mistajeff5370d ago

I'm amused by the fact that after reading an article that tries to trash this game, I'm already itching to go back and play its relentless awesomeness. Too bad my tv's occupied right now.. although there's an upstairs overlook down to my living room, maybe I can just do a quick glide kick...

Axis5370d ago

I really don't think he's trying to trash the game, as he owns it and loves it.

The point he's making here is the game should not be held in high regard compared to other titles.

LtSkittles5370d ago

I've played through it twice, and loved it both times. I love the stealth, but have yet to get used to the combat. The acting is very awesome if you have ever seen B:TAS, and Hamill does a very good job as the Joker, and it's fun when he taunts you. The boss fights were all different, and were fun(especially ScareCrow).

I'm sure R* knows the Nintendo Switch install base and probably dont really care to port over more R* games to the Nintendo Switch tho i gotta say playing GTA4 & RDR1 on the go on the Nintendo Switch would be dope

Knightofelemia674d ago

I would buy Lollipop Chainsaw, Alice Madness Returns, Enslaved, Splatter House, Brutal Legends, Dante's Inferno, and Dead Space for sure if they were ported to the Switch.

Mobis-New-Nest674d ago

Deus Ex Human Revolution would be a great title to The Holy Grail of All Consoles aka The Nintendo Switch*. Also Haze Remastered, Grand Theft Auto 4 and 5 Remastered, Silent Hill HD Collection, Max Payne 3 Remastered, Call of Duty World At War Remastered, The Orange Box Remastered, Halo Master Chief Collection, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 Remastered, Metal Gear Solid 4 Remastered, Afro Samurai Remastered, Demons Souls Remastered, Xmen Destiny Remastered, Jack and Daxter Collection, Def Jam Icon Remake, Folklore Remastered, Spiderman Edge of Time Remastered, Persona 5 remastered, the list goes on. (*Best Selling Console of All Time)

MontyeKristo674d ago (Edited 674d ago )

Can we just get a Bully 2? 😒

iplay1up2674d ago

Seriously? Isn't it time Nintendo make a Switch successor? I mean they have the sales and money.
