God of War Collection – Blu-ray Disc Compilation Available This Holiday Season

The fans spoke and we listened.
For those that recall the God of War survey conducted earlier this year, an overwhelming amount of the community suggested the PlayStation 2 experiences of Kratos be brought forth to the PlayStation 3.

Thanks to your feedback, we are excited to announce the God of War Collection for this Holiday Season. Now fans and newcomers to the series can experience the epic journey of God of War and God of War II in 720p HD form. Both titles have been remastered with anti-aliased graphics, running at 60 frames per second for a smooth gameplay experience, only on the PS3 system. Additionally, the Blu-ray Disc compilation will bring the PlayStation Network (PSN) trophy support to the franchise for the very first time.

This is good news indeed. Means I can go back and play the first two GOWs that I never played, before 3 gets here. I did take the rumor with a grain of salt, figuring most likely not. And that I'd have to be content with never playing the first two before GOW3, being as how I wasn't going to go buy another ps2 just for a few games (especially since I have so much to play on my ps3 as it is). Definitely will pick this up at that price to get caught up on the franchise. If they include a demo for GOW3 too, then this thing will sell huge. Either way it should do good with just the upgrade and the trophies for people. Should be a nice incentive for them to do this with other ps2 classics in the future if the sales do in fact do well.

If this GOW collection does well, it actually wouldn't surprise me if Sony did other ps2 hits like this in the future. It would be a work around for BC, plus be a way to put more money in their pocket (since they'll sale) and I wouldn't think the upgrade could be too costly. Wouldn't surprise me really if that's in fact what they're doing here is testing the waters so to speak to see how viable an option this would be.

Though if they did do trophy support I doubt anyone except for the insanely good could get the Trophy (Dante Must Die) probably one of the hardest difficulties I've ever seen in a video game besides Ninja Gaiden 3 on the NES.

I thought God of War 2 was already absolutely stunning, but if they're giving it the Ninja Gaiden Sigma treatment to port it up to current-gen standards, holy hell, that's just wonderful! And trophies, too. I don't care what they do with the rest of their back catalog as long as they bring ICO and SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS to the PS3 in a similar fashion before LAST GUARDIAN ships. I'm curious how they did it. They might use some sort of virtual PS2 (emulation) in its core, but not an exact chip level emulation, hence the improvements and possible rework necessary (I cannot believe they have ported the code, not manually at least). But if they have a technology to "refactor" (or recompile) PS2 games, that would be awesome for other PS2 titles yet to (I'd hope so). I'd like to know if they brushed up assets or they do that in SW only. Geek in me is curious...

Would you rather have a number of top PS2 games get this treatment with HD, trophies and budget prices or would you rather they work on a firmware update for backwards compatibility?

I can't really answer, since my PS3 has BC, but, there's a few "collections" I'd rebuy on Blu-ray if they HD'd 'em and added trophies and so on.

Sony would be making a good profit from putting top PS2 games with HD, trophies, and budget prices versus R&D into making PS3 BC for ALL games. Most are asking BC for the top games. I think they could care less for PS2 Harry Potter titles.

There are a few collections I would re-buy in a heart beat if they remastered them.

I equate this to DVDs getting the special edition and remastered editions or buying the same movie on Blu-ray because its now in HD.

Oh yeah, I'd def get both the Ratchet and Jak series on one blu-ray. For sure.

For a start the PS2 Ratchet series doesn't work on my 60gb, so I'd buy that in a heartbeat. All the Jaks but Jak and Daxter work on my PS3, but I really think that should be taken advantage of. I can really only see it working for first party titles though.

Heh, I'm getting vibes of the awesomeness that Super Mario Allstars had all those years back when I used to play it at a mates house.

Anyway, I think most important would be the Ratchet series so all the Ratchets can be playable on one system.

I think this would be a pretty good alternative to BC. All the things you mentioned would add enough value to buy the games all over again.

It would be like Playstation 2 Greatest Hits Remixed for the PS3. Throw in a few extras like exclusive demos or Home items on the disk like Batman AA and it's money in the bank.

Imo this is an official confirmation again that ps2 games on ps3 will only be released in this special edition way and it makes sense there is alot of work needed to get it running, so while doing that bump the rez and get trophies on there too.

It makes more money and at the same time ppl will love the fact that games will actually look as good as you remember them, topped of with being massive value for new customers I hope this sets a trend for sure.

I think they should make all the Ps3 backward compatible. For the simple reason that, with over 130 million ps2s sold they will NOT stop selling Ps2 games so why not boost the Ps2 game sale by making all Ps3s BC? I am sure not everyone is interested playing old Ps2 games on the Ps3 so for those people come out with these packages! Everyone can be happy at the same time and all bases are covered!

My guess is that we will have both options in the future. I'll try to explain myself, as i'm not english, and it's not easy for me.

Most relevant strategy concerned in recent GowCompilation move is about Backwards Copatibility. It's a good opportunity to us, people that closely follow everything related Sony to guess their future moves.

Sony is still selling PS2 systems, generating profit in each system sold. It's clearly not a good idea to discontinue this product. Universal BC would most probably have an adverse effect on the number of ps2s sold. If ps2 market is weakened it risks to disappear, as many retailers will not want to use space on a low revenue almost non sold machine. If this happens, many users will transition to wii or xbox arcade due to lower price points compared to ps3. So Sony still has some time to improve ps3, it's catalog, it's features and it's price to make it more attractive to the ps2 only owners.
But only some time.

Meanwhile they have to develop a truly universal software based solution , which could be not as easy as all of us may think. I mean, maybe this software still doesn't exist.
Side note for those that dont know: europan ps3 is not exclusively software based, as first consoles didnt have the emotion engine but had the ps2 graphics chip, so it had partial compatibility.

As a conclusion i think Sony is greatly interested in implementing universal BC, but at the right moment, and they will do it 100% SURE. With the 299 price point, state of the catalog, and big ads campaign, personally i still don't discard some surprises in the near future. But if it's not possible this year, it will be true next year.

Now, more specifically to answer your question:

Facelift Ports Pros for the gamer:
Added value to the original product (HD, AA, Trophies) And some more ideas: dynamic themes, wallpapers, soundtracks...
Availability of old titles that you missed (not everybody has the originals)
Are presented in very interesting prices, similar to PSN quality downloads, but made physical to attain a major share of the market.

Facelift Ports Pros for Sony:
Extra income with no big development investment
Increase brand value of owned IPs
Generate anticipation of a new game (clearly in GOW case)

BC Pros for the gamer:
Play all your collection
Ocasional option to buy some new niche ps2 game (i.e. 2008 was Persona 4)

BC Pros for Sony:
Eases transition from PS2 to PS3, but caution as i already theorized it could also "kill" the ps2.

I didn't have a PS2, so I missed out on a lot of good franchises that I would buy in a heartbeat if they were offered in HD, like GoW (check), ico/sotc, maybe twisted medal, jak, ratchet, kingdom hearts, etc...

I might eventually get a PS2 and buy those games, but Sony would probably make more money if I bought the remastered versions.

I've said elsewhere that this might be a good marketing ploy for Sony with a few upcoming games and does point to a possoble reason for continuing the lack of B/C.

They could bendle the two team Ico games at 720p pre the release of TLG which really could boost interest in the team of developers, introduce newcomers to theur work and hupe the new game while making some pin money too. Think of the possibilties for Sony-a new LoD game? Release a shiny remake. Syphon Filter to return? Same again. They might even want to do deals with thirds like Konami and release a remastered MGS2 to heighten interest in the PS3 version of Rising and I, for one, would LOVE oto see Sony push the boat oput, secure KH3 as an exclusive and work with SE on a remastered bundle of the first two KH games-like the GOW games they still look pretty cool on PS2 and would take to 720p and 60fps amazingly well and would sell pretty nigh numbers while hyping the new game again.

Twisted Metal , to me, would make more sense than ANY of the other series to do this with in my eyes. In the UK, and mopst non US countries IIRC, TM wasn't ever a big franchise-many of my mates(all gamers)have NEVER seen a copy let alone played a game with Sweet tooth in it! So an introduction to the series could be essubtial if Sony have put much into a new one.

Whatever, IDK what, if anything, this has to do with BC but I do see the great options it might give Sony depending on the cost of remastering these games and the sales they might garner-esp from those without NC opr that missed them the first time round.

To be honest I had forgotten about the franchise untill they showcased GoW 3.
From there on I started to get more interested in it, and seeing the feed backs and hype about the franchise as a whole this serves me really well.

This doesn't emulate PS3 software though. The game is built up for the PS3, which is why it runs at a higher resolution, faster frame rate, with anti-aliasing, and trophy support. It's a port, updating the games for current generation technology.

i love god of war, but they should of did thid when part 3 is released and sold it for like 80 bucks or something. part 1 and 2 on 1 disc and part 3 on its own. that would of been sick...

The reason I haven't finished 1 and didn't bother buying 2, is cause I upgraded from a 32 inch LCD Samsung HDTV to 52 inch LCD Sony Bravia. I must say that my new tv while playing certain PS2 titles and 1 titles on my 60 gig. It's EXTREMELY strenuous on my eyes with the bluriness of textures and what not. It's unbearable to finish even 1 level.

Now with this I can finally play and finish both titles, and see what is raved about with this franchise!

I must admit though that Im thoroughly disappointed it's not coming with the GOW3 demo though!
