Sony rolls out PSP firmware 6.0 beta for developers

QJ.net reports from PSPGen.com : "With the PSP Go release date just around the corner, it seems Sony is pretty determined to prevent the hacking community from tinkering their brand new handheld by releasing various firmwares. Now PSPGen is reporting that Sony has already released a brand spanking new beta version of PSP firmware 6.0 for official developers to test their games and adapt with the brand new firmware."

Please add .avi and .wmv support to the PSP.

That would be great for the PSP!!!

sniper-squeak5392d ago

agreed! =)

It would make it the ultimate portable gaming device in head-on competition with the iPhone...

Would also be great if they had stuff like a calender, stopwatch/timer, world time, alarms, calculator, a memo, music DJ, wider range of USB connections, multi-tasking (like more copy+paste etc.) and all these could be added in through FW updates...

Close_Second5392d ago

...would be great but there are so many variants I wonder which ones it would support.

As for turning the PSP into a PDA (i.e. notes, copy/paste, etc) not really interested in that at all. They should stay focussed on the PSP being the ultimate portable gaming and media device.

sniper-squeak5391d ago

Yh, for copy+paste, I meant like Pictures, Music, Videos... more variety of folders etc. Like whats on the current PS3.

mushroomwig5392d ago

Could the PSP handle something like that? I hope so! XD

mushroomwig5392d ago

It's going to be a great couple of months.

September 1st - Ps3 Slim + Firmware 3.0

Ocbober 1st - PSPGo + Firmware 6.0

I know F/W 6.0 hasn't been given a date yet, but it's pretty obvious they will release it at the same time.

sniper-squeak5392d ago

with all the great games coming out too!

Uncharted 2
Assassins Creed 2
Modern Warefare 2
[MAG]
[GoW III]

Since the number is rounded up i expect a decent update and not just to combat hacking.
I do not agree with hacking or exploiting anything.

mushroomwig5392d ago

Agreed, I hope they are not just making it a X.00 update purely because of the PS3 3.0 update and for stopping those pirates, I'm hoping for some nice new features. :O

It has been a while since the last significant upgrade to the PSP firmware. Most are done to add some stuff that is hard to recognize...but MOSTLY to stop the hackers. I just wonder how much money...in man hours, r & d, testing, etc. Sony has spent on combating the hackers versus the actual amount that they lose due to pirated software!?!? Not that I support pirated anything, but do the ends really justify the means.

I think if sony wanted to prevent hacking on the PSP they should force the update if not you could not go online. Just like they do for the PS3 if you don't update you cant play online.

That would be useless for two reasons :

1 .Even on ps3 there were progs to fool the console into thinking it had the proper firmware . it was pretty much abandonned because there was no real flaws to exploit , so no need to keep the console with old firmware versions .

2. There hasnt been till the Psp go that manycompelling reasons to really go online , unlike the PS3 . Except for Monster hunter fanatics . Adhoc party appeared quite late , and without it there wasnt much reasons or way to play online . Now that the psp go comes along with a choke full store and new features , it's more interesting to go online with a psp .

Sony has been doing what it needed with the appeareance of the 3000 . Hardware security with the new motherboards on newer lite and every psp 3000 . It was cracked in the end thanks to a still present flaw , but took quite a long time and is still bothersome (can't turn off the console , unless you redo the whole process , and cant play yet 5.5 games) .

It's getting quite harder and harder . And you can bet the psp go will feature further hardware+software changes to fight piracy .

iceman065391d ago (Edited 5391d ago )

Most of the custom firmware for the PSP doesn't allow you to go online anyway...well aside from the NEWER ones. No online is a SMALL price to pay versus a FREE game. (from the pirater's point of view)

@Baka
You are correct. The 3000 sku was built to be hacker proof. But, those hackers won't stop until they get it. With the internal battery of PSPgo not being removable they have taken away the "pandorizing". I also heard that they are doing something software related to keep "iso's" from being burned to the PSPgo...But, I am sure in due time that the hackers WILL find a work around.
