Exclusive: First Details of U.S. PS3 Slim Marketing Blitz

SCEA is working on a brand new marketing campaign to promote the $299 price of the redesigned slim PS3. Unlike previous ads from Sony, some which involved creepy robot babies crying, this campaign is meant to be humorous and less abstract.

That one crying baby video was hilarious xD

Chris3995374d ago

It's pretty catchy.

I remember Shuhei saying something earlier about how they were treating this almost like a launch. It seems that way. Let's just hope that they keep the ball rolling with smart ads like this.

It's a brilliant machine, just a shame that more people aren't informed of that.

Raf1k15374d ago

If' only it did. It'd be pretty good if you could use it as a hard drive recorder for TV.

Poirot95373d ago

I'm pretty sure you CAN use it as PVR (your "hard drive recorder for TV").

I live in Canada and I know that the service isn't available here (at least not yet), but I'm pretty sure that, somewhere in Europe (Britain, maybe?) you can buy an attachment for the PS3 that allows you to use it as a PVR.

I'm too lazy to look this up, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

deadreckoning6665373d ago

Great turn around for Sony. M$ ill have ta start showin early vids of Natal in action to build up hype.

Close_Second5373d ago

See if you can use the PlayTV where you live. We're supposed to be getting it in NZ end of this year.

PlayTV turns your PS3 into a HDD recorder for the free to air digital service.

Willio5373d ago

"Director of Rumor Confirmation." haha priceless title.

Bubble Buddy5373d ago

Good to see hopefully finally marketing wisely. Keep up the good work Sony :)

C_SoL5373d ago

I thought the first PS3 ads were the sh!t.

They were unique and beyond.

Which I personally like.

JL5373d ago

I actually went to Best Buy today (picking up some movies). While I was there I ventured over to the games section. Noticed this ad campaign going on there. On one of the end pieces they had a big set-up and display going on advertising the Slim and had that "It only does EVERYTHING" tagline heading the display. Gave me a bit of a chuckle. Should be real good for Sony if they treat this like some relaunch to really get behind with some advertising.

Andronix5373d ago (Edited 5373d ago )

In the UK and Europe, free TV has begun the phasing out of analogue broadcast, and changing to digital broadcasts. In the UK this means that the 5 main channels and a whole lot more (not all good) are available for free if you have a 'Freeview' digital set-top box, which is built into most new tvs.

The PlayTV is an advanced 'Freeview' attachment for the PS3. Using the PS3's hdd for storage it allows you to record one tv channel whilst watching another, or even whilst playing a PS3/PS1 game. Kind of like Tivo.

One of the best features is the PSP connectivity. If you have a PSP (and an internet connection) you can watch live TV broadcasts & library recordings sent from your PS3. That means that any where there is Wi-Fi you can watch TV. Recordings to take up a lot of HDD space so it is good to upgrade to a 500gb. But I use one and it is a nifty bit of kit!

Guido5373d ago

Oh so true. It is the complete media and gaming hub - PERIOD. Others might try but they fail to do what Sony is doing. Kudos Sony for the PS3.

duplissi5373d ago

it only does everyhing!

lol those ads are exactly what sony needs to be putting out

A. NINTENDO Wii has the lamest gfx and motion sensing controller.
-Online gaming cost u NOTHING, but piracy helps WII sales.
-PAST: 3RD fastest selling console. (gamecube released at later time)
-NOW: 1ST fastest selling console @ $249 (waw)

B. XBOX 360 has the common RROD failure.
-Online gaming cost u $50/yr, but piracy helps XBOX 360 sales.
-PAST: 2ND fastest selling console.
-NOW: 2ND fastest selling console @ $199-$299

C. PLAYSTATION 3 has the unified breaking heart failure of fangirls.
-Online gaming cost u NOTHING, but no piracy turns PS3 sales down
-PAST: 1ST fastest selling console. (waw)
-NOW: 3RD fastest selling console @ $299 (it really hurts fangirls)

ODDS:
1. PLAYSTATION 3 end up at 3RD PLACE in sales due to SONY'S FAILURE to debut the PS3 ahead of time. But the fangirls love to put the blame on it's competitors for releasing XBOX 360 and WII one year earlier.

2. PS3 EXCLUSIVE games is the only weapon for SONY to counter-attack MULTIFORMAT games that play better on XBOX 360. Also, first-party/exclusive games generate more revenues to SONY than third-party/multi-format games do.

CONCLUSION:
DO NOT buy the American console (XBOX 360), buy $299 SONY PLAYSTATION 3 - the Mighty Japan Console. Americans shouldn't need to proud of their XBOX 360. That's why we used a blond character in the ad to fool you Americans to make profit the foreign company.

meatnormous5373d ago

The Wii and ps3 launched almost the same time.

Poirot95373d ago

I know most people on this site are exceedingly quick to point out that the PS3 is in no need of course correction and that everything about it is perfect, but let's face it: it's not perfect (don't worry, I myself am a huge PS3 and am going somewhere with this). While I love almost everything about my ps3, from the games, to the blu-ray, to the psn, to everything else, I am more than willing to admit that Sony has f'ed up in the marketing/promotional department.

And a re-launch is the perfect opportunity to correct this issue. While maintaining the same technology, games and level of service we've come to know and love, this re-launch provides Sony with the opportunity to re-brand the PS3. This may seem obvious, but I think they should really, REALLY go overboard on their advertisements. Buy as many prime time TV spots as possible. Get on all the hero spots of the main web pages. Do EVERYTHING. If two of your commercials come on one after the other, so what! Even better! It makes no sense for the PS3 to spread out its marketing money over a month long period. They should blow all their marketing wad, so to speak, in a one week period just after the slim releases. Then trickle off to almost nothing for a few months, then come back strong a week or so before Black Friday.

As for the nature of their ads, I agree with the article in that this comedic, easy to understand approach is a huge step in the right direction for the PS3 (over crying babies and puddle reflections and stuff). I still think that they should try and hammer home the multi-functionality of the device. The "it only does everything" slogan is a good start, but I would do more. Make the PS3 sexy, an object of desire, something that even regular people are willing to shell out 300$ for. I'm not sure if you remember, but a while back Sony ran an ad where the PS3 was like a swiss army knife and all of its features were its "tools". And there was a wicked rock song in the background. More of that stuff.

Phew. Sorry for waxing on so long. Thoughts anyone?

insomnium5373d ago

Me thinks you are very special. It's not everyday you see a PS3 posting in n4g ("I myself am a huge PS3"). LOL

No but seriously I agree. Sony should advertise the h*ll out of the new price.

Poirot95373d ago

Well played. I didn't notice that. I won't edit it so everyone can enjoy my idiocy!

Mu5afir5373d ago

They could have done a lot better with sales. People just don't realize all the things the PS3 is capable of. If only they had the slogan "It can only do everything," from the start.. Bahh.. better late then never.

Football season is just getting started here in the USA. Be a good time to show it off along with some Madden Madden 10 :D

Microsoft once tried to nab LittleBigPlanet from Sony after a few drinks

It turns out that many moons ago, Microsoft once had its eye on the Sony published LittleBigPlanet series.

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Cacabunga2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow3d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1822d ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie2d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere2d ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow1d 11h ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney1d 6h ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno2d ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno2d ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

2d ago
fsfsxii2d ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno2d ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?
