I went to pick up Batman Arkham Asylum for PS3 and they had 3 PS3 slims on the ground behind the counter in the same packaging as the guy in the picture is holding. I was soo tempted to buy it as a second PS3.

morganfell5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

I gave in...a few days ago and preordered. I'll be picking up my Batman Collector's Edition from a different shop on the way home.

The Gamestop here wasn't even aware they were coming in early until I called them and asked about arrival. They said 1 September. I said no, Tuesday or Wednesday. They called me back and said it wasn't even in the computer but the shipment came in today all the same.

shingo5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

It is time to believe and free thyself from any constraints.

PS3 Slim awaits thee. Go and pick up one.

Silellak5365d ago

I went to Best Buy at lunch and it was swarming with PS3 Slims. They had an entire area set up for PS3 Slims and Batman.

darthv725365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

I do think the packaging will really help sell the system. It is similar in style and simplicity to the ps2 slim. Maybe those looking to buy lil jonnie a ps2 will see this and think it is the newer model. Plus you got those sales people who all work on commission and will say almost anything to make a sale.

Nothing wrong with talking up the latest and greatest. Especially where consumers arent that informed. Wii is going to have tough competition this xmas.

@below...suuuure twelve. I believe you.

TheTwelve5365d ago

Just bought one "for my wife".

ThatCanadianGuy5365d ago

Damn man...

I want to pick one up SO bad! But after that $1500 ticket i got last week, i'm broke for awhile :(

ultimolu5365d ago

...Dammit, the temptation is too strong for me now. ._.

joydestroy5365d ago

i'm with all you guys. i wanna pick a second one up now too haha

solar5365d ago

i cant wait to not buy one....oh wait.....i like my fatboy better. the Slim looks like a cheap knock off :/

Eddie201015365d ago

I just purchase the PS3 slim and I must say the system looks really good and is very solidly made. Also , I didn't see this in any of the unboxing videos, but it also has a Blu-Ray disc with welcome videos, game videos and Blu-Ray movie trailers.

IdleLeeSiuLung5365d ago

Seeing how Sony first introduced the slim with a price drop scheduled for September 1st. MS responded with a price cut on the Xbox 360 Elite for the same time frame. Sony then responds with allowing the sale of PS3 Slims early....

I guess they are both (Sony and MS) desperate and a win for consumers!!!

evrfighter5365d ago

I actually agree with Solar. As a pc gamer and enthusiast airflow is a very big thing for me. If I can find the fat version of one. I'll probably end up buyin it.

Christopher5365d ago

^^^

Confused at your statement. PS3 Slim produces less heat, and therefore requires less fan use and airflow...

morganfell5365d ago

The early release was announced the afternoon of the PS3 Slim being unveiled at Gamescon. I won't say nice try because it wasn't even that well attempted.

Chris3995365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

- Great form. It doesn't look nearly as cheap as some people think. It has a utilitarian, sophisticated design. It looks right at home in an entertainment center.
- VERY QUIET! Can't stress this enough. My old 60 giger was a beast when both the fan and the blu-ray drive got going. The only real noise is when you first put a disc into the console.
- Still runs hot. Less heat output than my 60 gig, for sure, but enough that you can notice it.
- There's only one vent, at the back, which is nice (as opposed to an the entire machines - sides and rear - to keep clean of dust and debris).
- Much smaller than I thought. About 2/3 the height of a 360, easily 1/2 the height of the older models.

All in all, I am TREMENDOUSLY impressed. The machine really feels like a return to form for Sony. It's beautiful without being too luxurious, striking without being dominating. A fantastically cool piece of kit.

Microsoft Xbox 3605365d ago

Just picked up my slim at BestBuy! F**k Gamestop.

Boody-Bandit5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

I am an impulse shopper with more disposable income then common sense so I am going to avoid retail stores for at least 6 weeks! Who am I kidding? I will have one with in a week tops.

Can someone give me an excuse for WAF?

Edit: What XBR series do you own Morgan? How is it for gaming with motion blur? Just asking because I am thinking about picking up an XBR 9 at Best Buy this week.

If anyone hasn't seen BB has a deal that is almost too good to pass up. A 160g PS3 combo and 32" XBR9 for $1100.

morganfell5365d ago

My 60GB is in the main room with the XBR. 80GB in the den. Clearing and cleaning a space in my computer room now for the Slim.

PinkUni5365d ago

its only like 5 days before

people do that kind of shuff all the time

Information Minister5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

@ idlelee
Retailers are breaking street date on the PS3 slim because every day without stock is a day of lost sales. Costumers will simply try to find the product somewhere else. This move by Gamestop has nothing to do with Sony. I remember retailers doing this when the N64 was released.

@canadianguy
How the hell did you get a $1500 ticket?!

ia_studio5365d ago

I got a YLOD only thing I need Is a heat gun to repair it... they don't sell those in my country, the weird thing is that a bunch of other people with launch ps3's are going trough the same problem Is it a strategy from sony to make me buy a slim....?

JoySticksFTW5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

The original 60gb was 200W
The next version was 160W
The latest fatboys were down to 130W

What are the slims down to with the new 45nm cell?

EDIT:

I'm just asking because it's been pretty hot the last few days, and I put a hurting on my 60gb (3 day weekend from work + back into Oblivion IV + fiance that's too busy caught up in wedding planning to care how much time I spend gaming = three straight 14 hr play days). :)

The 60gb stayed whisper quiet. I opened her up and cleaned her out down to the fan and motherboard. Scary stuff - I had three "extra" screws left over. doh...

But anyways, I've been hearing about the Slim's cut in power consumption, and was wondering if it was a dramatic drop from the 60gb to be worth picking one up.

thanks!

EDIT:

Bubbles for the help Sarcasm. Thanks for the correction and the info!

Sarcasm5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

"Apparently Sony, hearing of Microsoft''s rumor price drop which was slated to happen 09-01-2009, the original PS3 Slim release date"

From the article. Do these people live under a rock?

Though Sony did say it'll release the "1st week of Sept" but they also said that it will be 299euros and 29,900Y. But actual prices ended up being 249euros and 29,800Y.

So nothing was set in stone and it seems as soon as retailers get them, they are free to sell it as soon as they liked.

Sarcasm5365d ago

This is the power usage on IGN's Website

PS3:
380w (2006 – 2007)
280w (2008)

PS3 Slim:
250w

morganfell5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

I am downloading all of my add-ons to my new Slim. You won't see that on a 360 with that migrate account crap. I now have my PS3 account on 3 different units.

The Slim doesn't have the traditional power rocker switch on the back. I was surprised to see that. So you sort of sit in the off mode with a red light.

@Brutally honest. I still have a 52 in XBR5 in the main room. But it has a newer type screen in it he he. I had an airtight service plan and when I got a dead pixel line when some movers swung a stack of very wide cardboard and hit the screen hard.

The repairmen came last week and completely replaced the screen right in the living room. The XBR series has a lot of commonality. There was almost no change other than panel backlight for the 6 series. almost no change for the 7 series either. My TV still costs an arm and a leg and runs even in price with the 9 series. When they replaced the screen they looked to see if that was cheaper than getting me a brand new XBR. The screen cost $3600. No doubt, the best TV I have ever owned. Motion Flow is the greatest thing invented since the advent of HDTV. And no problem with motion blur. It happens when it should and looks great.

One other note. Someone posted they have their Slim set up and the new active themes are great. Yes they are except they are not out yet. You can upgrade the new Slim to 2.80 but not 3.0 and 3.0 is what you need for the new themes. That isn't until 1 September. So somebody isn't being honest about having one.

DaTruth5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

Only thing I can guess is driving without insurance. He must live in Ontario, where the maximum fine is like $20000 for a repeat offense, but the second is usually $5000. The insurance companies have the Government wrapped around their fingers!

Information Minister5365d ago

Damn! I got a €250 speeding ticket last year right before Christmas and I thought that was bad. Learned my lesson, though: next time I'll blame it on GTA.

Lifendz5365d ago

Picking up a second PS3? How I envy you. I still haven't picked up my first 360. But kudos to those that could afford to get a slim. I have a 60gb launch sku and I just did my quarterly cleaning of the system. Hopefully I can keep the YLOD from ever rearing its ugly head.

To the people that bought the slim and already owned a PS3, do you plan on selling your old one at any point? There are a lot of games coming out this year and I can't help but think that an extra 200-250 would be beneficial.

morganfell5364d ago

Absolutely not. I now have my PSN account on 3 machines. And I can go online on anyone of them at will with no account migration necessary. You know, that hour and a half (or more) process that takes place if you put you account on a different 360? Doesn't exist on the PS3. I just went to my past downloads and pulled in all my purchases such all the Killzone 2 map packs, R&C QFB, Resistance 2 additions, etc.

I also pulled in the new SOCOM patch and that game just became the best online shooter around.

Yeah there are a lot of games coming out but I don't have to worry about cost. I know everyone isn't in that boat. But neighbors drop by and hop on one of the other PS3s and we jump online and have a blast. No, I am keeping them all.

Lifendz5364d ago

sounds like a charmed life my friend. If you're in NYC I'd like to come by and bask in the glory of three PS3s. That is unless you're this guy:

kagon015365d ago

I have the old 60gig model. Still kicking...

morganfell5365d ago

Same here. I upgraded the drive and it is my main PS3. But I couldn't turn down another one.

nycredude5365d ago

I am right behind you guys. The only thing is my wife is balking about it! Good thing it doesn't look the same as the phatty and the logo is hard to see so I can just tell here it's a new upconverting dvd player! :)

randomwiz5365d ago

Im so thankful I have a fully loaded 60gb(now a 64gb SSD) that can run linux, play all ps2 games, and is more shiny than the other fat ps3's.

Guido5365d ago

I have the "Pretty, Hot, and Tempting" PS3 and have two of the Slims on pre-order. Just because you own the PHAT PS3, getting a second is not cheating whatsoever.

LordMarius5365d ago

I dont need another one
I specially feel bad because I'm wasting all my money buying books when I could be buying this

For some reason since I paid $500 for my PS3, $299 seems like a steal and tempting

The_Zeitgeist5365d ago

The old phat PS3 looks sleeker. I would never take the slim over the old design. I love my old design. Plus the ability to run windows and linux kicks ass. It's like having two computers in my room now. But hey congrats to all the people that didn't have a PS3 and now just got one. You are going to love it. Be sure to set up a media server with your PC. That way you can watch all your torrents on your TV :)

Aquarius5365d ago

me too :(

it looks so futuristic :p
I wonder if SONY will add a FW update so we can time-travel. lol jk.

Christopher5365d ago

I want to get one, but my wife would kill me for buying a third :(

Hopefully I'll find an excuse to 'lend' the one in our bedroom to someone for an 'indefinite' amount of time.

why do stores always break street date common there's a reason we have a date of launch Sony should just send it when it's 1 or 2 days before launch so shops can stop breaking street date it happened to KZ2 & inFAMOUS

lokiroo4205365d ago

How is getting it early a bad thing?

randomwiz5365d ago (Edited 5365d ago )

my local gamestop said that there was no street date, and they could sell them as soon as they arrive

DevilsJoker5365d ago

The reason its a bad thing is because now PS3 phats and PS3 slims are about for the same price. So the whole clearout has been shortened and so now sony are up sh*t creek because they have loads of obselete stock at the exact same price.

lokiroo4205365d ago

@devil

really the comments alone on this story show the demand for the old ps3, let alone the stories of stores selling out of the old, and to think selling a week early is going to effect sale is a bit naive.

PS3 Update 4.91 Released and Does What You Expect This Feb. 27

You read that headline right! It's not a typo, as Sony has released PS3 update 4.91 this Feb. 27 2024, and it does what players might expect.

darthv7266d ago

It says it is for an updated Blueray key but we all know its to also try and patch the exploits that were found in 4.90. And soon this one will be exploited and released as CFW 4.91

Pyrofire9565d ago (Edited 65d ago )

One day the PS3 is gonna be the most STABLE OS every created.
I think I might as well look into some Homebrew at this point. There's probably a cool scene on it.

aaronaton65d ago

I play my PS3 on a CRT @576i. There is a clear bug that Trophies aren't popping up once earned, you hear the noise, but they do not appear at the top right.

CobraKai65d ago

You hold on to that CRT for as long as you can.

anast65d ago

They are still supporting the PS3 that's one reason why people prefer Sony gaming.

FinalFantasyFanatic65d ago

I only finished Xenogears on it in January, nice to see it's still getting the ocassional update.

Whatever Happened To Virtua Tennis?

Sega's prominent tennis sim just couldn't be beat. And then vanished without a trace. Why?

thegamebutler.com
ApocalypseShadow543d ago

Answer: Sega.

You could change the name of the game in the title that was awesome in its day, could still be around today because of its fun factor with a remake, remaster or sequel, that's in their huge back catalog, that's no longer being produced as a franchise. And the answer would still be the same: Sega.

As much as I love their games and their spunky attitude. That Sega no longer exists that I grew up with. The current company is a mere shadow of its former self with only a few moments of grandeur. Which is why owning their previous consoles like Dreamcast, is a necessary thing if you want to continue playing games like Virtua Tennis. The reason why I have two of them just in case one stops working. And of course emulation on the go. Wink. Dreams do come in red.

Terry_B542d ago

Virtua Tennis 3 and 4 didnt sell well. Thats all.

senorfartcushion542d ago

Both Virtua Tennis and Top Spin have gone. It’s annoying for tennis game players.

CBaoth542d ago (Edited 542d ago )

Yeah....all 5 of them. Obviously, game budgets now outweigh profit for what essentially boils down to Pong. I'm not talking about coders but licensing costs. Boxing, golf, etc...all fall in this category where real life athletes far supersede their worth in video games. Same thing occurred to Sony's Playstation All-stars. Sony spent 2 generations helping to cultivate all these 3rd party mascots into recognizable assets but when it came to license them for a game, they didn't want to pay the exorbitant fee. That game's 1 million sales didn't warrant a sequel and I very much doubt ANY tennis game could reach that sales plateau

senorfartcushion542d ago

It’s funny how you’re over the age of 3 and don’t know how to read properly 😅😅 Why the bizarre response?

Yi-Long542d ago

I couldn’t care less about licensing in a tennis or golf game. I don't need real-life players or locations/tournaments.

Just give me some fun cool characters, some courts/courses in varied gorgeous locations, and use the Virtua Tennis or Everybody’s Golf gameplay. That’s it.

ActualEngineer542d ago

I used to play tennis IRL and in videogames. My 2-cents is that a boring game that was simulating an extremely boring sport, was thrown under the rug, now that the devs can produce more complex and interesting games.

It's like the tetris-like games and games like space-invaders, that stopped being produced ... it is because they were good and simple to make in the early days of commercial videogame development but they are just not as interesting as, let's say, an open-world coop arpg ...

Five Video Game Console Launches That Went Terribly Wrong

Yet they all turned out to be great systems with lots of gems, except for Jaguar. Wii U was a criminally underrated system. The Gamepad implementation of Zelda Twilight Princess was incredible! I was so disappointed they removed it altogether for Breath of the Wild because they wanted "parity" with the Switch version. Its a shame and it was a lame excuse.

You can tell BotW was designed around the gamepad usage, with all that menu navigation. That item management and weapon switching would have been 100x better with the gamepad. The worst part was they never let the wii U players know they were removing it! I got the game for Wii U at launch and was disappointed it wasnt there.

PS3 was a mess at first but what a turnaround! That was a crazy generation. Uncharted 1,2,3, Infamous 1 & 2, God of War 3, Last of Us, MGS4, Ratchet and Clank series, Little Big Planet, Modnation Racers, Killzone, Resistance. My god they were so on point later in that generation it was crazy!

TheEnigma313604d ago

Nintendo Screwed themselves using the Wii name again. And the jaguar was straight doo doo; I still have it.

darthv72604d ago

I had it too... Jag could have been something great considering how good the ST games were. And now many of those have been ported but it was too little too late. The CD was just plain unreliable (apart from being an obvious design flaw). The thing about the Jag was it was just too Euro. given that Atari was built initially a US brand and then it later became more European and you could tell from the games. There is just something that stands out with EU created games vs NA or JP ones. Alien vs Predator was cool but def needed a better frame rate. At least 30fps instead of the 15-20 it was.

Im actually surprised nobody has gone back and tried to remaster that one for other platforms. It was a pretty good game.

PS3 had a buggered up launch but Sony was able to turn things around with the PS3. I still say the XB360 had a terrible launch half the systems cooked themselves and the RROD would appear. Then the 3DO, CDI, Pippin, the Amiga, 32X the list can go on and on with systems with terrible launches.
