The Evolution of Gran Turismo

PlayStation LifeStyle:
"The Gran Turismo series debuted in late 1997 with the original PlayStation 1 game, Gran Turismo. The game sported an unprecedented 180 cars, 11 race tracks, and high-quality visuals. It was quickly sold out in Japan, and developer Polyphony Digital raced to produce both North American and European versions of the game. The original Gran Turismo was very well-received not only due to the quantity in the game but also due to the quality racing simulation gameplay. Eventually, Gran Turismo would become the highest-selling game ever on the PlayStation 1 platform."

free3sixty5366d ago

And lol @ 1000 cars...

also this is your LAST GT this gen so you must get 1000 cars, hahaha. I mean you already waited 2.5 years while 360 owners jumped in!

But wait until!

Speak2theHand5366d ago

While i am looking forward to this game. I just have to reply to numbnuts up there.

@N4G king
And how many of those 1,000 cars are truly going to drive 50-100 maybe. I would much rather have more tracks than more cars. Lets be sensible at put the fanboy stuff aside a minute. Nobody can't say they would rather have more cars than more tracks.

ElementX5366d ago

"As for tracks, GT5 will feature 20 distinct raceways, but there will be up to 60 different layouts of them."

http://www.1up.com/do/newsS...

So more than 20 if you count "layouts" but what are the "layouts"?

Utalkin2me5366d ago

Well it does not have 60 distinct tracks, 20 distinct track that will split into different sections. So basically 1 track is going to count for 3 tracks in a sense.

rockleex5366d ago (Edited 5366d ago )

And they'll say its the cars and the unique realistic handling of each car.

People make fun of Polyphony for including different models of the same type of cars, but fans actually ask Polyphony for more!

Why? Because we want to be able to drive the exact same model of a car that we actually have in real life. We want to try and tune it up as much as we can.

We want to test out other models of the same car to see which model handles better, takes corners better, has the best top speed, etc. This is why the amount of cars matter.

In fact, a lot of my friends were still complaining about GT4, and its crazy amount of cars, for not having the exact year model of a certain car that they wanted!

Gran Turismo and its fans has always been about the little details.

If you're not into all that, then Gran Turismo isn't the series for you. Go check out Forza or Need For Speed.

LazyDevs5366d ago

That is fine to mess around with different cars and such. But you always have a few cars that are the bread and butter that you will always use. There is not a single person that will drive even half of those cars. Having great cars and cars that handle great is a must but having alot of tracks with alot of variety is a must also. You can't tell me you wouldnt have been happier with say 40 distinct tracks instead of 20 and say 500 cars.

rockleex5366d ago

I'm one of those fans. So I care more about the cars.

Sure, I'm not ever gonna drive all the cars they offer.

But why do you think GT has such a wide audience? Because they offer the most cars. There's cars for everyone, no matter your taste.

Qazdaz5366d ago

I have heard a few different interpretations of what PD put up on their website. Another one I read said that there will be 80.I'd wait until we get some hard facts rather than jumping to conclusions

Greywulf5366d ago

So with 400 including SUV's and old Pos's, i guess that means you're going to only drive 1/2 right? Whats the glaring double standard that will have Forza3 owners seemingly using all 400 vehicles again?

The track list hasn't been confirmed either, and last time I checked. F2 counted reverse-alternate routes as multiple tracks. NFS shift could have 200 tracks, it wouldn't matter because its not GT. Much like Forza could have unique 100 tracks, it would still be forza & not GT.

phosphor1125366d ago

Anyway, here are my thoughts:

1000 cars? Awesome. I will probably only use 500 AT MOST (throughout the whole life cycle of the game) but different people prefer different cars, so the option of choosing the 500 most favorite cars will differ from person to person. I unlocked over 300 cars on GT4, and I don't even own the game, so that tells you something.

80 tracks so far is cool, I hope they announce more. There are enough WRC, Nascar, and the standard race course to be over 100 courses. *crosses fingers*.

I'm kind of sad damage isn't on all cars, nor do we have any idea how the FINISHED version of the damage will look. Hopefully it will be something worth while, even for only a fraction of the cars. Even then, damage has never been a necessity. It's only to cater to those who want it. If I wan't damage, I would like it like GTR and other PC sims. 1 bump and you are done, of course that will never happen, but oh well.

Also, only fanboys will completely deny Forza or GT over the other. Racing fans will accept both (assuming they have both consoles). That being said, I PREFER GT over Forza. GT has always had this sort of "classy" feel to it that other games simply don't give you. It's this sort of elegance and portrayal of professionalism that makes it so appealing, so far from looking at GT5: Prologue, it seems to be keeping that unique feel, and I'm looking forward to the full release.

cranium5366d ago

If you guys would rather have thousands of tracks and only a few cars to drive, then that means that ModNation Racers will be your most anticipated racer of all time, right?

That’s cool! Knowing me I woulda still done the tests, but awesome they had cheats

Deathdeliverer404d ago

The article SHOULD say, “BLAST FROM THE PAST! Old school gamers in awe as GT4 cheat codes are discovered after 2 decades. These “cheats” offered free treats for gamers added time savers, additional ways to play, and more. Some magazines had sections or complete issues dedicated to them. Sound strange? Gamers today know them by another name, DLC or Downloadable content…

PhillyDillyDee403d ago

Sounds like a different article. You should write it. Can you do blogs on this site?

vTuro24403d ago

GT4 was my first ps2 game. I loved it, but the disc stopped working before I could complete it and I never got it replaced feelsbadman.

PlayStation 3: chasing the 1080p dream, part three - Gran Turismo 5 and the indie explosion

From Digital Foundry: "Welcome to the third part in the biggest DF Retro episode we've ever produced - a year-by-year look at how 1080p gaming fared on the PlayStation 3. Launched in 2007 touting its then-exclusive HDMI digital interface, Sony layered full HD gaming on top of its Cell processor and RSX 'Reality Synthesizer' as key selling points for its third generation console. Of course, we all know how that turned out - both Sony and Microsoft machines routinely ran the most advanced titles at sub-720p resolutions, often with questionable performance, so what happened to the 1080p dream?

In the first two parts of John Linneman's investigation, we've covered off the first four years of the Triple's lifecycle and moving into 2010, the overall fortunes of the PlayStation 3 continued to improve. The platform holder released - what was then - the most advanced motion controller in the console space, backed up by experiments with stereoscopic 3D, which turned out to be a short-lived but still formidable pairing. Combined with a strong E3 showing, PS3 was looking good.

However, it's fair to say that it was a fallow year for 1080p gaming on the system, with only Scott Pilgrim Saves The World's razor-sharp pixel art upscaling, Castle Crashers and Soldner X2's 3D/FMV stylings accommodating full HD output - alongside a wonderful Monkey Island remaster."

Just remember ladies and gentlemen, Sony never said all games would be 1080p. Only that the system would support games up to 1080p in a survey before the system was released.
https://spong.com/article/9...
And as we saw, some games did support it, some games tried their best to support it and some games didn't or never reached it.

Is a higher resolution great to have if you can do it? Sure. Is it necessary for a fun game? No

But what I find interesting is Eurogamer. Are they really talking about HD and PS3 in their article or are they really pushing their 4.50 Euros 4K video download subscription? Seems one is being used to sell the other. Just look at the bottom of the article.

Michiel1989649d ago

thats what every company tries to do, push for people to buy their products. Are you really gonna blame them for that?

ApocalypseShadow649d ago

Not all articles are about selling. They're about informing or entertaining.

Maybe I'm supposed to watch the video instead of reading. But I shouldn't have to click. But the article lazily tells us some games did hit 1080p and some didn't. I didn't learn anything new as I own the console. Then, they push a Patreon subscription.

Are you saying every opinion, preview, review and rant article requires a push to buy something now? Tell me which sites are prone to do so so that I can avoid them in the future.

Michiel1989649d ago

not everyone played during the ps3 era. I started during snes era but loved seeing articles/videos about how gaming evolved before that.

i dont think this article is trying to push you to get that patreon sub, it doesnt for me at least. I dont think theres anything wrong putting an ad at the bottom of the article. all the regular DF videos are free already.

SonyStyled649d ago

Wipeout HD on PS3, a remake of the PS1 game was 1080p 60fps. And that released in 2007-08

Christopher649d ago

This really feels like a filler article. I don't feel like I learned anything notable or substantial from this. I feel they could have reduced the unnecessary intro and over-explanation of things and put the whole series in one article for a more substantial and possibly informative piece rather than piece-mealing it out as they have.

dumahim649d ago

It's more about the video. DF Retro videos are for Patreon members first, and I think the whole thing was one big video. For the youtube channel, it gets chopped up and released weekly.

ApocalypseShadow649d ago

Chris is actually right on this one. Something known already was just kind of washed over in the article. Unless you're supposed to get more in the video. If more is in the video, then more could have been said in the article.

Only thing I learned new was that they are selling a subscription. My point though is that you gain more viewers by having better articles and content.
