FFXIV: Tretton didn't say "launch timing" exclusive at E3, says Tanaka

VG247: The words "launch timing" were "cut out" of SCEA boss Jack Tretton's FFXIV exclusivity announcement FFXIV at E3, producer Hiromichi Tanaka told VG247 at GamesCom today.

When they started going downhill is very obvious. It's when Squaresoft and Enix joined to make Squenix. When they were separate companies, some of the best games of all time were made. Once they joined up, they lost a lot of their competition and while they have made some good/decent games as Squenix, everything they make isn't good (or even average) like it used to be.

In my opinion, the best Squenix released game was Dragon Quest 8, and they didn't even make it. The Kingdom Hearts series, DQ8/9, FFXII (some will disagree, but I think people are WAY too harsh on it), FFVII Crisis Core, FFIV remake, and maybe a couple others that I am forgetting are the only games worth mentioning from Squenix, and that means, at least in my opinion, they've released probably 20-30 games that I feel are average or worse.

When the two companies were separate, it was rare and memorable for them to release an average/bad game. It's such a shame that now it's the complete opposite.

I for one played FFXI for 6 years straight. People who talk crap about that game A) didn't play it B) played it for 10 mins and stopped since their brain can't handle a game where the more work you put into it then the bigger your reward back to feel like you accomplished something.

FFXIV is far from just a prettier FFXI. They added the same races and re did them a bit then all the sudden it's a prettier port? Come the hell on you dipsticks. I for one having been following all the news I can get on this game since it's my most anticipated game this console generation and other than the races it is NOTHING like FFXI.

Everyone needs to stop posting or acting like they give a crap about this game when you know you don't even plan to give it a chance. This is now the new punching bag by fanboys to keep that console war alive.

Wanna know who won the console war? The guys who got all the consoles. Now would you kindly go kill yourself if you aren't in that category and do nothing but find ways to spin everything in favor of a company who doesn't give 2 sh*ts about you.

Completely agree.

Since the merger of SquareSoft and Enix they seem to have lost the plot.

Their whole strategy appears to be 'Must sell more games in the West'. And they seem to be trying to do this by dumbing down and 'Westernising' their IP's.

What SquareEnix seem to have failed to grasp is that a huge part of their appeal is that their games are NOT specifically tailored to a Western audience!

So SE have gone from a great JRPG maker who sold loads of titles, to just A.N.Other developer making fairly mediocre titles while we wait for the big one.

I can understand it to a certain degree - with the HD era it's taking longer to make games and their production is getting much more expensive - so SE need to launch a lot of other titles to keep the production of FFXIII going and to keep the balance sheet ticking over.

Unfortunately the easiest way to do this is to milk their established IP's and take advantage of the devoted fan base - which results in more and more dilution of their brands and more and more mediocre 'filler' titles.

If not they have some strange business practices, hell sales didn't starting tanking until all the bad games and delayed releasing of the FF's (most of thier PS2 library, FFXII delay, FFXIII delay, delay of every ****ing thing else, DQ kind went downhill in sales in America long ago)

2-3 mil a ff is pretty good considering the ps2 was the most pirated console ever. id imagine another 1mil(understatment) copies would have been sold if piracy wasn't there.

if i were the head of SE id would be pumping out smaller 20-30 hour of lesser graphical quailty, games with amazing story and gameplay. less flash more quality. a great story trumps amazing graphics any day. just look at the early ps2 games, suikoden 3 is hand down one of the best stories ive played but the graphics are disgusting.

well im not into the FF series,
i played Kingdom Hearts and its awsome, thats why im waiting for FF VS (the game is goin to have a gameplay style like KH)
