PS4 or Xbox 720 or Wii 2 – Who Comes First?

Gameplayer analyses the comment made by John Carmack that the PS4 will be the first next-generation console to market, running through the reasons why this may not occur in order to establish a likely pattern of release for the three upcoming consoles.

i totally agree that I do not want to see any new console until at least Christmas 2012. Maybe even 2013... it feels like we are only just starting to get into this generation now.

I agree completely! This console gen was so expensive compared to previous years. Not to mention I feel I've barely made a dent in this gen. and feel the graphics are at such a high, how can you improve. I'm pretty satisfied and don't want to see more expensive things coming to market for along time. Until 80% of the games push these consoles like kz2 and we see more MAXING OUT of the systems then we can talk next next gen.

I agree. The fact MS got the jump on them this gen and the earlier than last gen(if the rumours are the cert they seem)arrival of this gens slim would point ot an eager Sony, imo.

Thing is Wii is pretty weak(comparatively) and will need a move to HD at some point and MG now know the benefit(and pitfalls) of an early release so it might be a hell of a race once the recession buggers off!

Both MS and Sony have both worked out that they cannot give the other a head-start, which means they will come out at exactly the same time.

so: 1st Wii HD then xbox 2.0 (since x360 is xbox 1.5) and then finally PS4D

I don't know exactly what order they will come, but I do expect Sony and Microsoft to be battling to be first to market.

As for date 2011 and no later before at least 1 console will hit the market. Anything else is just bull. Yeah PS3 got late start. X360 and PS3 will be around til 2015-2016. Don't worry about their future proofing or lifespan. Fact is fact and 4 or 5 APIs are releasing in 2010. Caustic RT, Intel's API, NVIDIA's, ATI's, and DirectX 11. All set to debut by or in the year 2010. Within one year hardware will be ready to support them. At least one console will be ready with that hardware in 2011. As the race to get the next graphical leap onto a console will begin. 2010 will be a buzz with rumors. Should be a fun year. Microsoft already has Project Phoenix on the table. Sony already has its timeline set for 2011 with its 5/10 year console lifespan. They have not announced any changes to it so its safe to assume it will continue as planned.

I don't often agree with you Mooey, but I think you're right in this case.

I am rooting for Xbox to win the console war, but one thing I don't like about its success is that part of the reason it's successful is because it was first to market. And believe me, all of the companies know this. What I'm trying to say is, I hope the drive to be first to market doesn't negatively affect the quality of the consoles.

Sony had problems with the PS2, and the PS3 is very well built. I am hoping that after MS's tough time with the 360, they have learned their lesson as well for future consoles.

I think:

Xbox 720 = 2013
Wii 2 = 2013
Playstation 4 = 2016. Why 2016? Because then Sony gets better graphic and more... + Playstation 3 gets more games and more sales then Xbox 720 and both Wii and Xbox 720 fails because everything all good games sales on PS3

I can't see the next generation of console games looking a whole lot better. I mean, if they match crysis, then they all look slightly better than KZ2, which in my opinion, isn't a huge jump. GT5 is looking pretty damn photo realistic already, and it'll only be released during the 3rd/4th year of the console's planned 10 year lifecycle. Aside from firmware updates and some additions/overhauls to services, what is left for the next gen after this one is done? Crysis graphics? We have that now.

Edit: Oh... and as for who will come first, probably Nintendo, if they still have a following. If not them, Microsoft for sure. They saw what happens when you come early to the market. But like I said above, how much better will the next xbox/wii/ps3 be compared to the current ones, by the end of their lifecycles? Will it warrant a completely new generation? Or just a fancy update?

xbox will be the first one to go as most developers have said 360 is pushed to the max and it already tapped out with gears of war2 nintendo i think they will replace thte wii at least late 2010 with hi def wii or whatever wii 2 maybe a launch in 2011 ps4 ive think about 2014 launch that would bbe 7 years after ps3 launched but i did hear something about wii 2 coming by xmas 2010 and m$ is going to be launching well ahead of hte xbox 720 around 2011 and ps4 2018

Nintendo hedged their bets that everyone wouldn't jump on the HD bandwagon right away and all at once, buying flat screens, Blu-ray or HD consoles. Pitching a console to people who may not even be interested in sinking a grand into a TV has worked out for them.

But prices are coming down. You can't even find SDTV's in some stores now. I'd wager you'll see a new Nintendo console first.

After that? Microsoft released first and has had their console out the longest, so they have no incentive to wait around, really. Sony does. They're invested in their "10 year strategy."

This all assumes this gen will last about as long as the last one, of course...

It's NOT just about the graphics though. More processing power is required for a true jump in game AI and physics, lighting etc etc...

In the high point of the NEXT-gen consoles... you'll see some really amazing games... and the hardware running those games will have much more processing power and memory than the PS3 or 360 in order to push those games.

The generation AFTER the next-gen consoles will probably have Lord of the Ring-type in-game graphics... then you can ask what's left?

i would like to think that sony would not want to stay behind and release their console on par with the microsoft but in all fairness the xbox 360 or the wii would have to release first seeing as they both got or are missing future hardware. the ps3 clearly has the advantage in longetivity. Blu-ray, wifi, bluetooth, and HDMI. Granted MS did add some of these features and made others optional, it did screw early adopters into buying another console for features it should have in the first place. i see ms releasing a new console earlier again due to progression in the next few years. i dont expect nintendo to get fancy since they have always produced the budget console.
