David Jaffe: My Response to Gamespot

As of now, here's what we're looking at:

IGN: 8/5/10
1UP: 8/10
GAMESPOT: 6.7/10

The first two I can live with, they feel fair and make sense. I am very, very proud of those reviews. Although, I have to say, when I hear the 1up guys on the podcast saying the game is the best on PSN AND saying that it's closing in on being one of the top 3 download games out there, it does seem 8 is a bit low...but what the hell...8 is good in my book, so thank you guys!

I'm not so keen on the GAMESPOT review, and who would be? It simply feels unfair and simply wrong. Granted, why would I not say that? I am the director of the game they are saying is simply 'fair'. So take my opinion with a grain of salt.

...and this is one of those times. Reviewers are people, and people have differing opinions. At the end of the day, the gamer's opinion is what really matters ; if it sells and makes a nice profit, that's all that should matter.
Fact is, gamers and reviewers (who are also gamers) alike will tend to expect more from the PS3....even the budget titles....because Sony pushed the "superior" CELL down everyone's throats for so long. This is a game that does NOTHING NEW, and certainly doesn't make the CELL, or the reknowned creator of God of War look great.
The reviews are fair ; if they'd been 9's and 10's, it would have wreaked of bias.

He means, look at the reviews. Notice how they;re lal similar except one? Gamespot is sucks ass. For crying out loud watch the wii sports video review. The asshat is sitting down playing all the games while reviewing it :|

Granted, I have not played the game nor will I probably ever play the game considering the fact that I have no plans on ever purchasing a PS3.

I can understand why Jaffe is confused by the review. Especially considering the difference between an 8 and a 6 when it comes to game reviews is a pretty significan difference, IMO of course!

The one thing that needs to be addressed is that 1up and IGN are technically the same company. So having the scores so close doesn't suprise me.

Gamespot on the other hand is totally seperate. And they have been very very critical in recent reviews. IMO Twilight Pricess on the Wii should have never received a score lower than a 9.5 yet Gamestop was the only major review site that gave the game a score lower than 9 (8.8 to be exact).

I do think its nice to hear a developers feeling about how their game was reviewed. IMO, I think developers should be more outspoken considering the fact that many people are turned away from a potentially good game due to the score it receieves from a review.

I see no problem with a developer backing up their hard work with a little rebuttle.

The only problem I think it could pose is eventually we may have developers trying to back up what is truly a huge pile of donkey dung for a video game.

im glad jaffe did this gamespot is bein run by microsoft jus look at all the high score they given the 360 and it sucks..callin all cars isnt even a full blown game..and its 10 dollars not freaken 60 dollars..for a psn game its great.

It's out for the PS3...they're not gonna give it a good review. It's like finding a good PS3 review on X-Play. It seems Morgan and Adam hate the PS3...or, at least, are paid to hate it.

Jaffe's pretty BA...and this game looks really good. I'll probably get it when it comes out. I still want Tecmo Bowl on the PSN though...

Games usualy have more then 10 cars and 4 maps not because they are big budgeteers .. but because that is the sweet spot, that is how much cars you need to please most tastes .. that is how much maps you need to suit the kind of playing/visual taste of most players ..

If you are going to do less then what makes a good game, it doesn't matter if you are charging less, just don't do it .. or charge more and make it good enough.

I can think of 20 or more FREEWARE games with as much effort and quality as this one. To be fair, most of well done downloadable games DO COST more then 10 bucks .. but that is how much they need to cost to have "enough" content .. (Say, Gish .. for 19.)

I think I would agree that Gamespot favors the 360. I would also like to point out that IGN favors the playstation. I think that's why I like reading review from Gamespot. I'm sure that most of the playstation folks love the IGN reviews. I presonally think they are horrible, but that's because I totally dig the games that they give 7's to. No one site is perfect. Every site has people that like one console over another. They have opinions and prefernces just like everyone on this site. If most sites give the game you are looking for a 9 and one site gives it a 5. Forget the 5, get the game and enjoy it.

the thing with ign is that they give the high score if it deserve it.they dont favor no system..heck i admit that fear on the ps3 flopped.. gamespot ign and 1up given it a low score.i dont know if gamespot is bein serious with their reviews or they just want attention. if u go to there site u basically only see high scores for only 360 games..

That means for 10 bucks, they think the game should only be worth 5 bucks? With 4 maps, online play, single player, and multiplayer split screen? Eh...I think they should've given the value higher but whatever, I'm still downloading.

I could see the score being what it is if the game was a lot of money but en bucks is cheap and I for one think the game looks fun.

I never thought this was going to be a AAA game but mini games are not to be that way they are just games to make you have fun and this one looks like it has all the making of a great game.

So Jaffe only has to worry about if the game does not sell well and not about GS not liking the game.

I wish David Jaffe reviewed some of my reviews on PSu...lol we actually have a hands on review of the game. I played Calling All Cars at GDC and I thought it was hella fun. Especially when playing with friends.

Jaffe obviously disagree's with Gamespots review score but he never called them biased.....AMAZING, he even admits that he at least understands their criticism but that basicly its sort of unfair given that it was intended to have a short single player mode since the main focus was to make a trash talking fun multiplayer/party game....and although I haven't played this game yet, if this is indeed where it succeeds then I totally agree with him that Gamespot should have maybe judged it more on that aspect. Whats really AMAZING is that instead of crying that they are bias because of this or that, Jaffe gives a very reasonable response about why he disagree's with Gamespot....I for one have so much respect for this guy, he speaks his mind and its just cool to see a developer defend his game without crying to his fanbase and calling those who don't agree with him bias. -Don't complain buy the game!

a 6.7 is a pretty low score, go back to gamespot archives and dig up another game that received a 6.7..

I think u would agreed with me that CAC is worth more than 6.7... GS down at this moment i can't go dig up anything, but i do remember i didn't buy anything on the lower than 8 list...for ps2

I agree with you, like I said although I haven't played the game for myself somehow after reading Jaffe's response I do think its most likely better than 6.7 -still its one reviewer's opinion, Gamers are smart enough to read several reviews and ultimately decide for themselves if a game is worth their money.

The man with balls has spoken and he is right:
GameSpot MISSED the whole thing about CAC. In opinions case, people who dont like that type of game have to stay away from it. If you dont like multiplayer, you dont go out and give Counter Strike 3 out of 10.

And CAC is no CS. Its a little fun game that could have been multi only but a single player is always welcome like fighting games. And for 10 bucks, CAC has more content than most of other DL games out there.

And last problem with GameSpot review is that Alex Navarro should have reviewed the game because he understands the fun more than others on that site and is also the most mature reviewer of GS.

This is what happens once you go hollywood. When they started out, they were decent gamers who game fair reveals and other things. But they've gotten so big for their own damn good. they feel the have the right to say and downplay other people work. If it was zelda they would give it a 11/10 and why is that ? because is zelda.
