Tim Schafer Speaks on Brutal Legend (Interview - 1/2)

Last week at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con PlanetXbox360.com's very own James Pikover had a chance to sit down with the insane mind behind one of the most anticipated games of 2009, Brutal Legend. During the interview (which will be posted over two consecutive parts) Tim Schafer reveals a ton of new information on the third-person action game including some exclusive details on the rumored multiplayer mode as well as how the studio dealt with censorship in such a brutal video game. Brutal Legend looks epic, nice interview.....Tim Schafer seems like a man who knows what he's doing; only a few more months til we get to find out!

This is the silver lining to all the AAA titles that got delayed. Brutal Legend & Borderlands became Day 1 purchases. The fact that Mr. Schafer considers Black Sabbath's Sabotage as one of the genre's best albums EVER further lends credibility to the IP. Seriously, it's a top 5 metal (hell, rock-N-roll) all-time album. I got goosebumps just thinking of firing up either console in Rocktober and hearing "Symptom of the Universe" actually incorporated into the gameplay :) Recording Ozzy's voiceovers would've been hilarious to hear and the censored beeping option with the black-n-red logo is purely '80s metal at its finest.

This game...holy heck. Makes me feel old.

I loved that game. Unlocked every song

MadLad770d ago

Liked the aesthetic, tone, humor, and action combat.
Didn't care for the RTS elements.

Never cared to finish it.

Yeah they marketed the game like it was a Heavy Metal GTA-ish adventure. And at the beginning of the game that's what it was. The game fell apart when the half-baked RTS stuff came in. I'd be interested in a reboot or sequel, but just go full action adventure and ditch the RTS. There really is something there with the Heavy Metal theme.

I feel you. I just hacked the game to have infinite life/RTS resources

PS360 gen was special, then again it was still the mid 2000s. Everything went to shite in the teens

I think that was the breaker for Doublefine's creative ambitions and their mixing of genres (which was getting kinda stale). It was a nice to look at but it was more of a tribute to the many things Tim loves, was influenced by and has great admiration for....but the forced RTS stuff was like a drinking buddy's "great idea" that never should have come to light. The game seemed a lot more vast, but it ended pretty quickly too. And Jack Black. As much as I don't care for him as an actor (annoying and requires constant attention), this was absolutely made with him in mind and it worked. I mean come on, Tenacious D? For as Metal as this game was trying to be, even comically, it did little more than meow.
