The Matrix Online - Where It All Went Wrong

Gamer Limit writes "With all of the build up to E3, Sony did try to sneak the downfall of The Matrix Online past us. As an avid fan of The Matrix Trilogy and a long time player of MxO myself, the news that MxO was going to be unplugged definitely served as a downer for me."

Feels somewhat a shame I never got into this game, as I quite like MMOs (even bad ones) would have been nice to see what the fuss was before it all went the way of the dodo.

The Matrix5403d ago

Being a small fan of The Matrix myself I would love to see the trilogy get a video game deserving of it's amazingness.

Chubear5403d ago

I had always hoped this would find a home on current gen consoles but alas..

vhero5403d ago

Played and maxed out my character when it very first started and for the first 2 month the weekly events were enough to keep me playing. When they made them fortnightly and less interesteing as well as killing off Morpheus I stopped playing as there was no links to the movies or the magic of the films anymore.

Maddens Raiders5402d ago

"what happened to “They got Morpheus so lets get all of the guns, shoot all the dudes, blow up their place, and go back to the ship for lunch”? I guess before Neo’s Truce and Matrix Revolutions the Matrix Universe was pretty much the wild west, and the post Truce universe turned everything into C-Span."

LMAO - damn I hate that they killed it....

It surely wasn't the best, but I enjoyed the Matrix MMO, simply because I loved the Matrix universe, I'm willing to put up with a bad game if i'm a fan of the name and universe.

StartWars5403d ago

It was indeed a dismal effort from what I've heard, but then so was Enter The Matrix.

TheGameLlama5403d ago

I never got to play it either... In fact, I thought MxO disappeared a long time ago like Sims Online. But, looking from the outside in hindsight, it seems fairly obvious that the lack of listening to the people who ACTUALLY PLAY YOUR GAME was a poor choice.

Way to go, SOE! Let's take down EverQuest next!

Tony P5403d ago (Edited 5403d ago )

SOE has attached their names to some pretty decent MMOs and some pretty disappointing ones. But I don't think they even developed most of them, just published.

The most disappointing MMO they have actually made is probably Star Wars: Galaxies.

Edit: Tbh, I'm not sure who is actually maintaining the content after the game launches, developer or publisher. Or both.

Eiffel5403d ago

Star Wars Galaxies was pretty fun but a bit broken..

Baka-akaB5403d ago

Again it was a sega game (done by monolith studios) , and Sony is hardly responsible for it being pretty much unfixable crap to begin with .

free2game3655403d ago

Monolith originally made the game and then it was sold over to SOE. They maintained and ran the game into the ground. Star Wars: Galaxies was an even worse case, it started out as extremely promising and even added space combat, then it was broken and casualized after WoW came out.

MagicAccent5403d ago

Actually, SWG was a very good mmo. Before the stupid Combat Upgrade, followed by the killing blow of the New Game "Enhancements".

Fans Deserve a New Matrix Game Too

Gaming culture as a whole has always been one of the main sources of inspiration for the whole Matrix universe, and it’s only fair that, upon the franchise’s return to the big screen, gamers should get a piece of the green-tinted action too.

Just remake path of neo, that would be awesome

isarai960d ago

Path of Neo is so underrated

Magog960d ago

I don't recall the old one being any good. Just play Control.

Eamon960d ago

Imagine Hideo Kojima made a Matrix game?

JokerBoy129960d ago

Just remaster or remake Path of Neo. That game was amazing!

Ranking the Matrix Games From Worst To Best

Considering its status as a pop culture icon that spawned half a million memes and imitators, it’s quite surprising how few Matrix games there are.

I don’t remember any of them really being that good tbh lol

roadkillers969d ago

You are mistaken, we just wanted a good Matrix game so bad that we said it was great.

FPS_D3TH969d ago

Idk I think it was the best matrix game, but it was still pretty average

Eamon969d ago

roadkillers is so correct.

It remains a mystery how a great Matrix game has yet to be made...

Outlawzz969d ago

Perfect opportunity to right this wrong committed so many years ago ! Lol bring us a matrix game worthy of the one himself !

DaReapa969d ago (Edited 969d ago )

I would kill to see Remedy (Control) develop a remake of Path of Neo. If ever there was a case for a game being remade, PoN couldn't be more deserving. Well, that and maybe the original Metal Gear 1 & 2.

I loved Enter The Matrix but was probably the minority and being a teenager with lower gaming standards probably helped.

CaptainHenry916969d ago

Will there ever be a new Matrix game? Probably not

plmkoh969d ago

The best Matrix game is Conkers Bad fur day

masterfox969d ago

There was a Matrix game pretty damn good that I played from start to finish, I think it was the path of Neo I think that was the one. :D

Abnor_Mal969d ago

I did not like the Enter the Matrix game with Ghost and Niobi, but played the heck out of Path of Neo.

We Need A New Matrix Game

Hours before the first official look at The Matrix Resurrections, Sam thinks back on past Matrix game attempts. Is it time for a new title?

Enter the matrix was an awesome game. It would be nice to have a new one but it would have to really push the boundaries of physics and animation to be any different this time around.

0hMyGandhi974d ago

I remember really wanting to love Enter the Matrix. For a movie licensed game, it was also super hard to buy at the time, and there was a insatiable itch to scratch in being able to enter that universe in playable fashion.
I remember it being okay, but also very buggy.
