CVG: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain Interview

A game based on the first Fighting Fantasy book is coming to DS this Christmas. Developed by Big Blue Bubble and published by Aspyr, the DS exclusive has the full co-operation of original authors Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone.

CVG has been told by the publisher that the game is still waiting on final dates for UK, Europe and Asia. Don't worry it will be released over here though. They have got a couple of exclusive screens too. On with the show.

heh well I like the title :) and 4 years to make! Well then glad they did finally get a publisher.

Their comments abouts major publishers does confuse me a bit though. Ubi have at least 2 DS only games coming in the future and they seem to have forgot that Ian Livingstone is at a publisher... a publisher who is now owned by Square Enix....

The intereviewer also did that thing I hate as well in some of the major questions being about putting the games on other platforms....

PS360WII5393d ago

I know I do hate it when the Q&A turns into a bring it to other consoles!

Well publishers don't mind DS only titles but only for certain genres and maybe they saw a potential to pump this game to others as it is based off, I guess, popular series.

That might be it, WRPGs are a big market on the HD consoles now, especially Oblivion style one but it's actually got me concerned about the quality of the game if publishers were refusing to pick it up. I can understand EA and Activion but Ubisoft is bring a new Might & Magic game to the DS and I think it's strange that they'd turn down a DS-only release when they've announced a few DS only releases.

PS360WII5393d ago

yeah hopefully it won't be bad. You have to wonder when they asked those big time publishers. Seeing that it's been in development for 4 years maybe they asked them 2/3 years ago when it was still young and not everyone and their mother wanted to put out a DS title?

But true enough WRPGs are big for the HD consoles right now.

SpoonyRedMage5393d ago

Ahh you could be right, if they went too early there would probably be a big lack of interest. That's the reason they give for lack of a PSP version as well...

On an unrelated note I think it's kind of funny how N4G is the inverse of how the market it is. The DS and Wii getting little attention(and the attention they get is mostly negative), the PSP getting a little more attention than that. The 360 getting quite a lot of attention but the PS3 getting the most.

ha yeah that's the internet for you though ;)

it shows, I'll keep this on my radar.

...I own a PSP, love the books and want to know why I can't play it?

PS360WII5393d ago

Well according to the interview by the time a publisher was somewhat interested in putting this game on the PSP as well the engine was way to DS specific.

SpoonyRedMage5393d ago

I think he means because I said I don't like how reviewers always ask "why's it not on another system?".

My personal problem with it is that it's only ever DS and Wii games that it's asked about because people don't like the DS and Wii and they wasted two questions on the subject. It's also becoming a recurring thing with interviewers even asking 5th Cell about putting Scribblenauts on other platforms...

And as I said it's never done in the opposite way around. For instance I'm a Soul Calibur fan but I don't see reviewers asking Namco why they're not putting Soul Calibur on the DS and if I was doing an interview about Broken Destiny on the PSP I wouldn't ask about a DS version because it's irrelevant to the game.

I do understand your point of view and it's a very valid one, I hope you understand mine.;)

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain Review - Hey Poor Player

HPP: When comes to video games, the term “role-playing game” has become synonymous with anything that involves a fantasy setting, experience, and leveling-up. It’s far removed from the tabletop systems that spawned the term. Sure, there were text adventures and MUDS/MOOS (look it up, kids) but outside of throwing dice around a table, video games haven’t managed to capture that feeling. The Warlock of Firetop Mountain manages to capture that feeling without having to find those pesky friend things people talk about.

BOUGHT!
Now Steve, please, please, please make Autoduel the game somehow someway.
I'm tired of all these combat vehicle games that THINK they are Autoduel but fail miserably.
Thank you.

Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain Stays Faithful To Its Roots

Dan Miller writes: "A first-person shooter version of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain was released on the Nintendo DS several years ago, but this new iteration promises to a far more faithful adaption. Your character progresses through the various dungeons and passageways, pausing every so often when a decision needs to be made. Combat takes place through the custom GridBluff fighting system with both you and your opponents making your moves at the same time – although it’s worth noting an alternative dice rolling combat system is available for purists."
