PlayStation Eye Camera - Coming to Europe

The next generation of Sony EyeToy has been provisionally dated as having a release of 'Summer' in Europe. Possibly to coincide with the release of the PlayStation 3 version of Singstar which will make use of many of its features.

Designed specifically to work with the next generation of social gaming titles and new services being developed for PS3, key features of the PLAYSTATION Eye include:

• A sophisticated microphone with the ability to reduce background noise and focus on the spoken word for smoother, more accurate speech recognition and transfer

• The ability to capture videos and audio clips directly to your PS3's hard disk drive

• Engineered to perform well even in low-light conditions

• A range of different capturing modes, including slow motion and time-lapse

• Faster frame rate for improved tracking, responsiveness and smoothness

• Two position zoom lens for close-up and full body options

• A range of eye-catching visual effects to apply to photos and videos

• Bundled with EyeCreate editing software, which allows users to save and edit photos, video and audio clips

At this stage it is unconfirmed whether the camera will be different from that used with the upcoming PS3 card game Eye of Judgement.

I thought they would have made it better than they have.

techie6217d ago

dude they're hiding what it can do. You won't believe it when you know what it can do. It's crazy

BrotherSic6217d ago

I agree that it will have some impressive 'games' but i thought the spec of the overall camera would be better. Its not much better than a standard web cam.

The mic seems decent though.

Hopefully this will push MS to start creating games for the Live cam

techie6217d ago

No dude these aren't all the specs. Let's just say that it can track the smallest amount of movement...say eye movement...join that with powerful software...

Karebear6217d ago

If this is some of what they have been hinting at in articles like this:
http://www.gamespot.com/new...

Then this could be very very interesting.

Snake_Doctor6217d ago

Wii, I mean 3ee sports without a controller? Forget that - STARING CONTEST... Blink sucka BLINK. lol

Sounds cool will this be out in time for singstar?

The Sad State Of Augmented Reality Video Games (Modojo)

Chris Buffa (Modojo): Augmented reality is a simulated version of the real world that has become a staple of television broadcasts, most notably as the yellow first down marker in football games. You've also seen it on the news and reality shows like American Idol and Dancing with the Stars, whenever the overlay appears, urging you to vote. Suffice to say, it's improved the viewing experience tenfold.

NukaCola4703d ago

Vita should do good for Aug Reality. The new fighting game looks cool. I would love to have a ghost hunting camera game. Like a Fatal Frame.

plmkoh4703d ago

AR has seen relatively low success because of mainly two reasons:

1. Low key marketing attempts.
2. Limitations: Low interactivity or bound by physical glyphs cards.

However Sony did show off an impressive tech demo that showcased AR that properly reads real world spatial data, which might lead to better interactivity and applications. The fact that it was demonstrated on a mobile phone means greater audience reach.

AR has really only caught on in the last 4-5 year and it's popularity gradually rising. It's still too early to start comparing it to traditional video game mediums when that has had over 30 years to mature.

jujubee884703d ago

Invizimals is not really a "blip", it is actually pretty popular and has arguably the largest community for an AR game ever (due to the fact it's got multiplayer).

AR games are not to different in nature from motion controls in that they require movement from the players side. In that respect, stuff like Mario on the Wii might have done well but, there are still many IP's that work and sell nicely on motion control gaming like Wii or Move so, I don't buy that AR needs an old IP to do well.

Also, the guy stated how silly one would look playing an AR game on the 3DS than states how cool a Pokemon game would look. That is either bias or inconsistency in his/her argument. xD

Joystiq Hands-on: PlayStation Eye's Kung-Fu Live

Kung-Fu Live sounds almost exactly like a Project Natal game. With the aid of a camera, your image is placed directly into the game, and real movements are translated into in-game actions. As the concept trailer above shows, you'll be able to kick and punch wildly into the air to take down virtual baddies. But Kung-Fu Live isn't destined for Project Natal. Instead, it's coming exclusively to the PlayStation Network.

sinncross5100d ago

lol looked like mortal kombat in a few instances.

i suppose for a psn game its a neat piece of software.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5100d ago (Edited 5100d ago )

It would be good to grab some enemies, would be a fight more deeply.

Is good to know the Developers are supporting more the PS Eye, with full Body Recognition.

There are coming more games to play without controllers too.

Trollimite5100d ago

i could totally see that. specially when he was doing the high punch thing.

Godmars2905100d ago

It is nice to see that Sony - might - directly support the PSeye. Make it seem less of an add-on to Move.

ChozenWoan5100d ago

And this shows that Sony's motion control system can do pretty much 90% of what Natal can do... even without the PSMove.

Now if they make it online multiplayer, that would be an...
ULTRA ULTRA UUUUUUUUUUULTIMATE COOOOOMBOOOOOO!

IdleLeeSiuLung5100d ago (Edited 5100d ago )

Except the additional 10% is what is what makes the experience significantly different. From the article:

"However, this doesn't negate the fact that I'm staring at the TV and punching and kicking the air. Because of the 2D orientation of the game, you'll be facing forward, but moving side to side, which is simply not as intuitive as facing the screen and moving in the same direction."

Yup, still a 2D camera.

ChozenWoan5100d ago

But that does prove that Natal is not as revolutionary as it's made out to be.

Also, add in the PSMove and you get 110% more... thanks to this thing we call buttons. LOL.. but for real, the PSMove takes mocap beyond what even Natal can do. Sony has shown a fighting game that is in 3D and forward facing. Although it's currently gesture based, it can just as easily be made to be 1:1 with gestures for the special moves. All without sacrificing 30% of the hardware capabilities of the console.

Sony's got the best of Natal and Wiimotes all in one system. There is no denying that it will be the most ground breaking mocap system this console generation. But don't take my word for it, just watch and see.

IdleLeeSiuLung5100d ago (Edited 5100d ago )

Was the ipod revolutionary? Was the iphone revolutionary? Was the Playstation 1 or 2 revolutionary? Was the Wii revolutionary?

My point being that most technology is built on existing technology applied in some way that distinguishes it from other products that others put more value on. That is the revolution, not the technical capabilities. With that said, I still believe that the skeleton mapping and recognition that Natal is doing is revolutionary in the sense that nobody else has shown me something as versatile as what I have seen with Natal.

Getting the computer to understand what you see is a research subject for a long long time that predates even the first Playstation.

The idea that something is revolutionary is BS though. Most products that are revolutionary fail and with a second, third or x number of tries does it succeed. That is what we are looking for, because most new products aren't revolutionary mostly improvements (large or small).

fooltheman5100d ago

Well that looks promising ^^
And under 15 bucks it's cheap too
