Their Number One Top reason is

you've already started using Linux or OSX :P

but seriously, i wonder how 7 will treat old/new games

MAR-TYR-DOM5408d ago

i thought one of the reasons may have been, you dont have to UPGRADE to xp if you currently have vista :)

Linux is a headache. I can almost bet my life that Linux will never go mainstream where everyone will use it. It's too complicated for people. Macs on the other hand, well, I'm not a fan of Macs. Overpriced and no gaming support (compared to Widnows), Macs are crud.

Zedux5408d ago

I'M no way buying this spin off OS! Linux is now undoubtedly a much better OS just see Ubuntu and it's for free! I'm putting really high hopes on Google Chrome OS Google's Google Chrome is 100 times better than IE if their OS goes the same route with less than 10 secs start up then it's gonna be a massacre! This is Windows 7 Microsoft's last day (I mean rip off)!!!

AorangePPLE5408d ago (Edited 5408d ago )

Ubuntu is too complicated for the average person to use.
Especially older people that are not used to computers.
And the Google Chrome OS is for netbooks for now.

Zedux5408d ago

@AorangePPLE dont be a fanboy if you really used Ubuntu you know it has all windows ups without the downs plus any 5 year old with a brain can use Ubuntu! Unless you're talking about those 90 years old folks in Florida's golf clubs!!!

AorangePPLE5408d ago (Edited 5408d ago )

Yea but Ubuntu is a big change from Windows.
You can't just put a game CD in and install it. It takes more work then on windows.

Gamertags5408d ago

is a very good OS. So far from my testing, every bit as stable and speedy as XP. TEN TIMES better than Vista....even with SP 2. I installed the RTM version last night and if anyone is curious or has questions please let me know.

I have been running the RC version previously and they have been buggy. So far, with the RTM, very, very good. All the compatibility problems that I experienced with the RC's have been fixed. Not to mention the bugs are no more. I am excited to see how easy it is to set up a network. Vista was pretty darn easy, XP was a beast. Once I use the RTM a bit more and it passes my tests, I will move it to my main desktop. Time to say good bye to XP for good.

@AorangePPLE: I doubt many of those "older" people want to play retail games on their computers.
Using Ubuntu is much easier than using Windows. I've tried it with a lot of neighbours and relatives, and where there aren't any hardware conflicts, Ubuntu rules. You don't have to follow wonky setup routines to install software, everything is updated using a centralized manager (every piece of software, not just the OS), you don't have to worry about malware, and everything is free.
Today, everyone can install Ubuntu. Download, burn, insert disc (in Windows), make some simple choices (language, timezone, etc.), done. AND it doesn't even touch your Windows installation. AND you can later uninstall it from within Windows' Software manager, if you so wish.

But yeah, sadly, most retail games are made for DirectX, and thus don't work on Linux. So, I too, will probably switch to Windows 7 for gaming. But only if DX11 or more than 3.5GB RAM becomes a necessity, otherwise I'll stick to XP.

FOXDIE5408d ago

Eff that man, im sticking with XP all the way baby!

mxdan5408d ago

Macs ftw.

Microsoft is trying to play catch up now to mac.

cherrypie5408d ago

@1.1

Yeah, most (just check the boxes @ the shops) will have the "Free upgrade on W7 release".

I've preordered 3 copies for my home machines. I've been running on W7 RC on all of them already, its a fantastic OS - it's going to be widely adopted, very quickly.

Looks better than Vista, but I'd much rather see a Google OS that's actually compatible with games. Microsoft has too many issues as a company to support forever.

AorangePPLE5408d ago (Edited 5408d ago )

What are these issues?

I've been using Windows 7 since the beta several months ago, and now I'm using the RC client. Windows 7 is very stable and is good for gaming. I can run Oblivion with modern nVIDIA drivers and it's as stable as it is in XP. As well, I can play Street Fighter 4 that came out pretty recently and run it at maximum settings at 1680x1050 at full framerate. I can play the game for over 45 minutes without so much as a single crash. Oblivion, which runs stable in XP runs equally stable in Windows 7. Windows 7 also has native driver support which Windows Vista had almost zero support for. It recognises lower end devices like my Encore wireless n-band card and downloads the necessary drivers for it. On top of that, it connects to my router flawlessly even before it downloads the drivers for my wireless card. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. I will be getting it when it comes out as from my experience, it runs extremely well on my hardware. I've only had the odd blue screen, but that's been because of drivers, not by the OS itself. The interface is fast, logical, and completely functional. Windows 7 is to XP what Windows 95 was to Windows 3.1. Personally, I can't wait for it. Every experience I've had with it is positive, not to mention it's great support for x86 applications.

cherrypie5408d ago

"too many issues as a company to support"

That's why I wont buy Sony products.

They are members of RIAA.
They are members of MPAA.
They install rootkits on audio CDs.
They didnt do *ANYTHING* to take care of PS2 owners with hardware failrues (i had 3 failed PS2s).
They are 100% committed to prevent interoperability; proprietary vendor lock-in is their behaviour at every opportunity.
They spent hundreds-of-millions in back-room deals to kill HDDVD which was a more consumer friendly format.

JD_Shadow5408d ago (Edited 5408d ago )

While I think W7 will be better than Vista, you're really making foolish reasons for why you don't like Sony:

"They are members of RIAA."
EVERY major label is a RIAA member and has been for YEARS! Not really an excuse.

"They are members of MPAA."
I don't like the MPAA, either, but again, ALL major motion picture labels are in the same umbrella. Not an excuse.

"They install rootkits on audio CDs."
No, they USED to. I follow stuff like this (hell, I have gotten EFF newsletters for YEARS now, and they were following that whole thing), and they no longer DO that (the EFF is following that closely).

"They didnt do *ANYTHING* to take care of PS2 owners with hardware failrues (i had 3 failed PS2s)."
And how many failed 360 have you gone through THIS generation?

"They are 100% committed to prevent interoperability; proprietary vendor lock-in is their behaviour at every opportunity."
Not quite sure what you even SAID here, but I assume you mean that you can't use anything besides Sony branded products with Sony branded products, which is NOT the case at all. In fact, Microsoft does this with the 360, and Apple does this with pretty much EVERYTHING they make. I have a WD 500GB HD in my PS3 right now.

"They spent hundreds-of-millions in back-room deals to kill HDDVD which was a more consumer friendly format."
Your proof of this is WHAT, exactly? And it's not like MS is exactly INNOCENT in doing things like that, either. Oh, and what about HD-DVD was more "user-friendly"? How more "user-friendly" can you get?

Lucky me, I have a whole brain. Which is why I'm keeping a positive eye on W7. But I don't plan to get it right away like I did Vista. That was pretty much my first time following an OS from beta to release and I've learned from it. Since I used it for such a long while, I'm familiar with the many positives of Vista. But I'm also familiar with the negatives of being an early adopter. So I'll let W7 marinate for a few months before signing on. Even if it means forgoing my reduced cost upgrade.

I've seen and heard largely good things about W7 though so I have no distrust of its quality and improvements over Vista. But if it's all the same, I'll wait a bit.

Zedux5408d ago

the only positive thing about Vista is the fact you can get if for free just google vista and the word torrent so it's a no compromise affair! but if you ever used Ubuntu Vista just seems to be the worse thing since Microsoft was bought by Mr. Bill $$!!

cherrypie5408d ago

Vista had many behind-the-scenes changes over XP. New Networking, new Video, new audio and all manner of architecture changes.

The "Problems" vista had were vendor's not updating their drivers. At one time, something like 2/3rd of all vista crashes (reported to MS) were a result of Nvidia video drivers alone(!) -- MS released this info, and nvidia quickly got their stuff up-to-speed.

Windows 7 is a more "user experience" scale update -- the W7 Beta program has

I ran Vista in the Beta and adopted it day 1, I was very clear to keep my drivers up-to-date and that solved most problems easily.

With W7, this isnt giong to be an issue.

If you ran the W7 Beta (RC) you'd know that W7 is 100% ready for complete adoption.

It's shown 100% ready to go, and everyone knows it.

HDgamer5408d ago

If you really got a brain you would know they use the same excuses with Vista. Fooled me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. I'll stick with XP until Vista and 7 disappear then a new OS appears, the Windows Apricot.

dirthurts5408d ago

I built my computer for vista. Fast, simple, sleek.
Never had a crash unless I was overclocking or something.
These people how hate Vista so much, I always question their ability to adapt to new environments.
No joke, I have a friend (computer major) who thought vista couldn't shut down...he was hitting the "power button" and putting his computer to sleep. Never knew about the little drop down box beside it to shut your computer down. I mean really...
come on people. Vista is sweet. Multi GPU support, mutli core support, Dx10, which actually works well.
I expect windows 7 to be as good, probably better.
Vista did suck at first, especially for all those people trying to upgrade to it. But the wrinkles are gone.

Tony P5408d ago

I respect both those opinions. But I personally like to judge the product itself on its merits. Judging what I haven't used (an OS esp.) isn't something that makes any sense to me.

mythamp5408d ago (Edited 5408d ago )

I must admit that i was an early adopter of vista and I really dont understand how many people are considering win7 to be so much better than vista. It takes the same amount of resources, it is as snappy as vista, it looks like vista and feels like vista. I seriously do not understand why people diss vista and are glorifying win7, they are truly identical. The honest main difference between them is TIME, when vista launched 3 years back people didnt have the resources in their pc's to run it so they complained, win7 is just vista 1.1, and now that people have upgraded their pc's are hailing it to be the next greatest invention after sliced bread.

Accept it, you didnt like vista cause you never had the pc powerful enough to run it back then, so stop complaining.

EDIT: Must admit if you are true fan of XP, you should stick to it, vista/win7 is just a sugar coat on top it which eats up alot of your resources. I respect genuine XP users who use it for its performance and stay loyal to it.

DevastationEve5408d ago

I have mine preordered already but if you haven't that's cool. You don't really need to buy the OS unless you plan on building your own system or upgrading to 7 from your old OS. Most of you will be just fine getting it preinstalled via OEM.

...I've actually gotten along so well with Vista that I really don't see a reason (personally) to upgrade to it right away, though I've already done my fair share of testing with the betas and the RC.

Just keep a dual boot honestly. Keep your sacred partition intact and just shrink some space for Windows 7. Give it a try and see if you like it. If you don't then just leave it as is or wipe the partition and add it back to your main partition.
