Fight Night Round 4 to get button controls via DLC?

OXM UK writes: "EA is considering adding button-mapped controls to Fight Night Round 4 via DLC.

As it stands, the only way to play Fight Night Round 4 is using the analogue sticks to swing punches. However, producer Brian Hayes says "there is no option for face button punching in the final version, but we are investigating providing the option via DLC."

If he means free DLC, that would be fine. If you ended up having to pay for the option to use button-mapped controls, it's exactly the sort of thing that will whip the internet into a frenzy and unleash their hatred EA's way. To say it wouldn't be the smartest of moves would be an understatement..."

Admiral_Benson5436d ago

Using the sticks encourages some degree of skill, by adding face buttons FNR4's online will just descend into mindless button bashing.

FNR4 should be treated as a boxing sim, not just another souless mash-em-up!

kingdavid5436d ago

As it stands, it is a mashup.

There is no precision at all with the analog stick. You try and hook and you end up uppercutting or jabbing.

So what this forces is the player to just hit anything they can or spam haymakers.

Youd actually have precision and stategies if you had the buttons in there and you could easily own people who just button mash.

Perjoss5436d ago

I dont understand all the complaints, I have only minimal problems pulling off the exact punch I want. 360 controller.

Tarasque5436d ago

That is one of the reason's i did not buy the game cause of the game being played on nothing but analog sticks. And really i could care less if they do add it, cause at this point i still will not buy it cause it should have been there day 1, and for 2 UFC09 is so much better.

StanLee5436d ago

The gameplay has too much depth to be successful using button controls. If you're not committed to learning the total punch controls, don't play this game. It's not for you, with or without button controls.

Utalkin2me5436d ago

/\/\/\/\/\
I am sorry but the game is not very in depth at all, don't get me wrong i enjoyed FNR3 but not so much 4 and it has to do with the lazy stick controls. And i agree with Tarasque UFC is so much better of a game it isn't funny. If you want a in depth game then that is it.

ceedubya95436d ago

But even still, the more options there are for people to play the games they have the way THEY WANT TO, then there's nothing wrong with that.

Lekumkee5436d ago (Edited 5436d ago )

I really hate when people use the button masher defense for this game or any other fighting game for that matter. The game isn't all about punching you gotta duck and weave, block and counter. If you are so skilled as you say then a button masher would be no problem for you to defeat. If you stand there and get your face punched in all day by a button user, well you deserve to lose.
I personally hate using the TPC scheme and it all boils down to choice, which FN4 doesn't give you. Looks like it's UFC 09 all they way for me this year. It's a shame cause I LOVED FN3 and until FN4 adds face button controls I won't be playing it again.... ever.

The Dark Knight5435d ago

i love it when someone trys to make a game better, worthless so called "gamers" cant take a change.

Well i dont know how un-skilled yous people really are but the stick is fine as it is

YogiBear5435d ago

Well if you like TPC all 5 of you playing online should enjoy yourselves then.

RJD1805435d ago

It sounds to me like your scared anyone who says that they don't want another person to have the controls they want that makes them fell comfortable is A F****** COWARD. making excuses that some has a advantage because of their controls thats ridiculous. IF YOUR GOOD AT THE GAME IT SHOULDN'T MATTER WHAT CONTROLS YOUR OPPONENT HAS F****** LOSERS.

cellfluid5436d ago

I guess ea hasn't learned from the lair developers... when will these game developers learn that u must not force game play controls on the players give us the option.. of havin an option.. nuff said

RJD1805436d ago

I heard that their doing a tournament of some kind with a 5,000 dollar cash prize and I think their going to excluded the DLC fan base cause they know one of us would win go to Gamestop they got them sitting on the counter watch them make the control patch after the tournaments already over F****** BULL

Admiral_Benson5436d ago

Each to their own i but personally i haven't had any troubles with the analogue sticks.

I have had to fight different fighters using different strategies, some fighting behind the jab, some counter punching others just all out brawls, and the sticks have always seemed responsive and precise to me. Started a Legacy career on Championship difficulty and my record currently stands at 14(11)-1-0. (Only loss was a split decision and i came back and KO'd the guy 3 fights later! :))

Those who can't play Fight Night tend to just throw wildly regardless of the setup, either way though there's nothing more frustrating than someone just windmilling away without any sense of style or strategy!

I can understand why some people would want it but personally don't see the need.

Rhythmattic5436d ago

Why all the Disagrees ?

Your point is Solid.

Tarasque5436d ago

You want strategy then you need to play UFC, if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen. The analogs slow the game down and makes it easier for the noobs that cant dodge or defend.

YogiBear5435d ago

You know I hear the windmill excuse a lot. Frankly, Im tired of it. It's just as bad with the analog sticks online and in career. The main point is that the game is $60 in USA and I can't play it the way I want. Until it's patched EA is not getting my money.

skip2mylou5436d ago

man just keep the sticks but just change it back to FNR3. forget button mapping

Guess we won't see another Fight Night until next gen at the soonest. Did any notable boxing games come out this gen at all?

lptmg1619d ago

the Creed game for PSVR was pretty good.

Skuletor1619d ago

Didn't know it existed, I'll have to look it up. Thanks

Petebloodyonion1619d ago

Fight night round 4 is still the best boxing game at the moment.
I still pop it in my old Xbox from time to time and nothing beats the feeling of a close fight in the late rounds.

isarai1619d ago (Edited 1619d ago )

I liked round 3 better myself, it gave you a lot more controll especially when it came to defense, which really allowed you to develop your own style and finesse to things.

Petebloodyonion1619d ago

I loved Round 3 but it was nearly impossible to win as a technical boxer.
The game heavily focused on the counterpunch Philly stance and Ko made winning a match by points nearly impossible.
Also, the losing boxer on a scorecard would get a boost of Stamina later on (lousy catch-up logic) was not something I was fond of.
I could also add the Headbutt that made cutting easy.
But I loved the corners mini-games or the dept of working on bruises and cuts.
The animation was also fantastic.

SkatterBrain1619d ago

cut the UFC Servers too , some of those grapples look awkward when people would walk in and see 2 guys straddling each other, i tried soo hard to make it not look weird

traumadisaster1619d ago

Tbh the actual matches look awkward when passerbys walk in and see the straddling party. I constantly think get up and fight.

BQ321619d ago

Round 4 was the best the franchise had to offer. You could find success playing to each fighters strengths and anytime somone wanted to spam a particular cheese i could always find a realistic boxing strategy to counter it. Champion started off pretty good but the game was very exploitable and became a cheese fest. The auto block severely hurt the game as well. If they ever make a new game i hope they look at how they achieved competitve balance in the gameplay of Round 4.

TheColbertinator1619d ago

Graphics were top notch in FN4. Too bad EA never returned to it.

We need Fight Night to return to the ring

Improved 4K visuals, a new generation of boxers and improved multiplayer lobbies…man, that would be great. Until that day comes, Fight Night is going to remain outside of the periphery of the fighting game genre, as the ref slowly counts one of the finest franchises out of the ring.
