Mars is not being developed for the Xbox 360 despite plans

Destructoid writes: Contrary to reports, Spider Games is not developing an Xbox 360 version of PC and PlayStation 3 RPG Mars. In an e-mail conversation with Destructoid, Spider CEO Jehanne Rousseau said an Xbox 360 version of the game was a logical step and is being planned, however, taking the game to the Microsoft platform would require help from a publisher.

"For now we're still searching for a publisher, so in one way the 360 version relies on them," Rousseau said. "But we do actually have a PC version and we're planning to develop for 360 as well, as it seems very logical. I'll be able to give you the final answer about the different platforms when I have the contract in hand."

In a recent interview, Rosseau indicated that the lead platform for Mars was the PlayStation 3. In his words, the choice was made because "the PS3 is a very complicated platform." Spider would rather jump whatever hurdles now, as opposed to later. Good call. Run a mile, then take a walk.

A PC/PS3 RPG? That's weird considering how closely the architecture of the 360 is to a PC. Who's publishing the title for PS3 and PC?

Ninver5451d ago (Edited 5451d ago )

"the PS3 is a very complicated platform. Spider would rather jump whatever hurdles now, as opposed to later".

this ^ = developer wanting to task risks and isn't afraid to learn new architecture(valve anyone).

this ^ reason alone inspires me to give them a chance. If only other none existent devs would follow suit, we wouldn't have conversations on how many pixels a certain game has over the other lol.

"But we do actually have a PC version and we're planning to develop for 360 as well, as it seems very logical".

the interesting thing is even though they realize the 360 is equivalent to cheap pc they still develop for the ps3 and pc first.

Lets just face the facts here. The ps3 allows developers to explore their imaginations while having more medium space to work with.

Chubear5451d ago

So the PS3 fanbase get this while 360 gets Tropico?

..LET THE FLAME WARS BEGIN! MARS Vs. TROPICO - FIGHT!

Kushan5451d ago (Edited 5451d ago )

"That's weird considering how closely the architecture of the 360 is to a PC."

Will people stop with this uninformed gibberish? The architecture of the 360 is about as far away from a PC as a Wii or a PSP is. The PS3 is very different from a PC, yes, but it's also very different to most previous consoles as well.
When people compare the 360 to the PC, and by people I mean actual developers, they're not talking about the architecture, they're talking about the DEVELOPMENT TOOLS. And do you know why that is? Because Microsoft happens to make the tools for both PC developers and 360 developers. That's why they're so similar - DirectX on the PC and DirectX on the 360 work pretty much the same way.
If you want to really argue this by saying the 360 has a Processor, RAM and a graphics chip just like a Pc does, well guess what - so does the Wii, so does the PS2 and hell, even the PS3 does, just it has a few extra processors as well.
But then again, the 360 has EDRAM and its system RAM is shared by the graphics card, PC's don't work like that (unless they're very cheap crappy PCs and even then, it's not the same, memory is RESERVED in those cases), whereas the PS3 has 2 distinctive banks of memory, which is a lot more like its Pc cousin.
So seriously, stop with this stupid comment, it's incredibly misinformed and has no basis in any argument against or for the 360, PS3 or console gaming as a whole.

MisterNiwa5451d ago

You cant compare both titles! They are in a totally other genre!

Montrealien5451d ago

The quote the article is based on...

"For now we're still searching for a publisher, so in one way the 360 version relies on them," Rousseau said. "But we do actually have a PC version and we're planning to develop for 360 as well, as it seems very logical. I'll be able to give you the final answer about the different platforms when I have the contract in hand."

the title of the article...

"Mars is not being developed for the Xbox 360 despite plans"

Am I retarded or did I miss something? Or is this just bad tabloid esque journalism, oh wait, nm, its Destructoid.

Chubear5451d ago (Edited 5451d ago )

well, I used these two titles in Tropico and Mars cause in each case the new smaller developers creating these games have both come out and stated they'd pick these consoles cause they're suited best for their projects.

So I'm thinking we can all now look at the quality of their end products, with general gaming experience, and judge which platform helped them produce a high quality experience to cater to their budget and experience.

... yeah, sounds good enough, now - FIGHT! XD

Greywulf5451d ago

mediocre underwhelming floptastic games. Have these guys made anything worthy of even arguing about?

free2game3655451d ago

It's PR BS. You could throw an extra 2-3 people on the project to port the 360 version, all you have to do is lower texture resolution (depending on if the PC or the PS3 version is the lead platform, if the PS3 one is, then there's no texture downgrades you'd have to do) and recompile the game.

"Hey MS, we hear you like to buy games - show us some money!!!"

Maybe they have concerns about how they'd deploy suitable servers on xbox Live. Maybe.

r.

Kushan5451d ago

Xbox Live supports dedicated servers....Left 4 Dead runs on dedicate servers....

Mo0eY5451d ago

Developers for the Xbox 360 have to buy dedicated servers for themselves. Valve uses their own dedicated servers because they are big enough to have paid for them. These guys not so much.

Kushan5451d ago

Sony doesn't supply free dedicated servers, if that's what you're getting at.

potenquatro5451d ago (Edited 5451d ago )

Have some bubs.

EDIT: Alot of companies don't have nearly as many servers as Valve does, and they still manage to put dedicated servers on LIVE and psn. So they can't be that expensive.

GiantEnemyCrab5451d ago

Keep fighting against people who have no freaking idea what they are talking about Kushan. I swear N4G is a huge source of misinformation.

+bubs as well.

If these guys still can't find a publisher then the game can't be very good. Prove me wrong Spider Games.

randomwiz5451d ago

yeah... i haven't even heard of this game until recently...

debut trailers looks.. meh

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5451d ago

How hard is it to find a publisher? I was interested in this game cuz I thought it'd be a ps3 exclusive. My excitement faded when i saw it was multiplatform. Not that that means the game'll suck but multiplats are usually gimped on ps3. When I saw the ps3 was the lead platform I was interested again. But if they can't find a publisher for the 360 version, it prolly means no one is interested in the game.... which is bad. The game sounds fun though. I do like the idea of it.

Raf1k15451d ago

'I was interested in this game cuz I thought it'd be a ps3 exclusive. My excitement faded when i saw it was multiplatform.'

really?

i wonder if you would have said the same for FFXIV

I'm not too fussed whether or not the PS3 is lead platform. What matters to me is how the end product turns out on the platform I buy it for.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5451d ago (Edited 5451d ago )

[I was interested in FF14 cuz I thought it'd be an rpg. My excitement faded when i saw it was an mmo.]

"I'm not too fussed whether or not the PS3 is lead platform. What matters to me is how the end product turns out on the platform I buy it for."

A lot of times the end product is determined by the lead platform. At least for us ps3 owners anyway.

Raf1k15451d ago (Edited 5451d ago )

so your not a fan of mmo games?

It'll still be an RPG only difference being it's catered towards massive multiplayer.

I can understand why you'd lose interest because of that and that's fine but I think we all need to wait and see how the game develops. You never know, it could turn out to be an amazing game even for you

edit: yeh I know what you mean about the PS3 comment.

edit2: just took a look at that trailer and it really doesn't look all that great. I'm not gona be keeping an eye on this game but I will wait to see what it's like nearer to the end of its development

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5451d ago

Honestly i don't know why i was disappointed in it being in mmo. But i was, and that's that.

And yes i know we need to wait to see more of the game. I'm actually not worried now about how the game'll perform on a technical level.

Raf1k15451d ago

fair enough.

MMORPGs aren't really quite the same as RPGs.

With JRPGs being heavy on the story side of things I can kind of see how an MMOJRPGs story won't be quite as engaging which is about the only problem I might have with FFXIV.

M.A.R.S. Early Access Gameplay

Aside from being dated in terms of graphics and gameplay and riddled with bugs even in an early state; the game was just boring and no fun to play. But here is a look at the pending game.

Top 5 Upcoming RPGs Nobody Remembers

BNR: Mass Effect. Skyrim. Final Fantasy XY Chromosome. Tell me, what do these games have in common? For starters, they’re clearly RPGs- popular ones, at that. They’re also massively expected, hyped, promoted. It seems that this generation has been a good one for roleplaying games. Unfortunately, it seems that plenty of (awesome!) RPGs tend to get overshadowed by bigger, more popular ones.

THILLREBORN4432d ago

Yeah there are several games that people forget like Data Fly...what happened to that it wasn't cancelled I know that.

Jourdy2884432d ago

Aw man, I was just thinking about that game! If it was an RPG, the list would've been 6 ;)

snipes1014431d ago

Am I the only one who got no audio whatsoever for the trailer to that "Mars" game?

Anyhow, I always love hearing about new, under the radar RPG's (that's how I found Risen, diamond in the rough if you ask me), good article/research.

Statix4431d ago

WarDevil and Data Fly both struck me as extremely suspect and possibly frauds. Why a company would want to fake a game being in development, I have no idea.

deep_fried_bum_cake4432d ago

I'm not sure that it's "Nobody Remembers" with these. It seems to be "nobody has ever heard of".

Jourdy2884432d ago

That probably would've been a more accurate title.

stonecold34432d ago

still waiting for final fantasy vs 13 to come out and same goes ni no kuni

Outside_ofthe_Box4431d ago (Edited 4431d ago )

Those are the 2 rpgs I'm looking forward to also.

I was really hoping ni no kuni would have released either in Jan or Feb to get my jrpg fix now while hoping that VS13 releases by the end of this year to get another great jrpg fix at the end of the year and by that time I should've been satisfied with my time spent on ni no kuni.

kreate4431d ago

It may not be as great but...

Tales of graces?
Hyperdimension?
Ff13-2?

Outside_ofthe_Box4431d ago (Edited 4431d ago )

@kreate

13-2? HELL NO! lol

As for the other games you mentioned, those aren't my type games to be honest.

Dark-vash4431d ago

You should think Outside of the Box... FF13-2 was way better then the first!

Indigo1234431d ago

ninokuni is already out in japan for both the ds and psp, in the US the ps3 version should be out in october or november.

But theres plenty of other stuff to love this year.......

IRetrouk4431d ago

It's been put back to 2013, according to the official PS3 magazine.

Indigo1234432d ago

Kudos on listing rexx first, some of those other choices are suspect

TopDudeMan4431d ago

Yup, I didn't know any of these games existed. I'll keep an eye out

Mars development put “in pause”

this will never see daylight on any platform/console..

KingNintendoFanboy5046d ago

I couldn't have said it better myself. It's gone.

mastiffchild5045d ago

Meh, didn't everyone already place this one alongside the debacle we've had with Wardevil anyway? These games, both of them, had about one update every 18months since being announced(and Wardevil's usually includes wild promises, like 1080p, 60FPS and so on, and a platform dancing announcement!)and NEVER anything like a solid hands on for the press or anyone else.

I'm seriously surprised theyu bothered saying this as I'm certain everyone with half a brain already wrote Mars off over a year ago-maybe more. When you think how many people work on games like these, how much a team of one or two manages on a million indie games and it starts to make you wonder if they EVER started on the actual games post trial demo stage/presentation/concept footage. Certainly ALL we ever saw of either was vague and ion Mars case looked shoddy anyway while Wardevil was always what seemed to be animated target renders and little else. Doesn't anyone else feel we might have actually seen gameplay of both by now had there ever been funding and a team working on them?

Suffice to say we have very little idea how Mars would have played as a game beyond the odd dev interview here and there(best I ever made out was that it was a WRPG/Hack and Slash hybrid of sorts but with a game like that, see FO3, you NEED to see how it meshes the genres and we only got glimpses of combat or a few clues as to how and what you might get to level up). Bethesda made sure we knew all about VATS and so on before we got to play the game, see it for ourselves in the flesh or anything else and I think Mars would have done too, a long time ago, were they ever seriously going on it.

Sure, it's sad to see a game looking like it's biting the dust but I'd run out of hope for this one a while ago, tbh.

Quagmire5045d ago

Its ok, at least we still got Red Faction: Armageddon coming out soon

aselah5046d ago

Ya, which sucks, it looks like it might have been a good game.

JewelTheif5046d ago

Hope it still comes out. You know how devs are with this on hold crap.

TheColbertinator5046d ago

Looks like cancelled to me.Such a shame

coolasj195046d ago

this game existed today. But, it's never gonna get released. Never good when something gets canned.

mastiffchild5045d ago

IDK, I wish they HAD canned quite a few games recently! Where's the justice when a promising idea gets stiffed and Wet sees the light of day to pollute our consoles? And half hearted efforts get through, like Eat Lead:The return of Matt Hazard, which looked like a decent idea that they can NEVER have had either the licenses(a few actual game characters would have made for an hilarious gaming parody but generic wizards and FF chars made it weaker than it should have been and in the state we got it they would havce been better off not bothering at all. Both ways there's a shame to be made) or the cash to fulfil decent premises.

Nier, was another game that just, for me, justified existing in the threadbare state it did(honestly, some of the worst current gen graphics/textures and models and animations can be found within SE's seemingly mistreated baby-was it Cavia's?)while a bit more time and money would have possibly made it one of the freshest and most imaginative rpg twists for a while. Seems to me there's a big issue with funding and it's luck whether your new IP or sequel to a near forgotten franchise gets made and HOW well the dev is capable of making it right now.

There must be so much money wasted in this industry on half finished ideas, ideas that get green lit but then canned and then budgets awarded that make making the game a travesty of what it should and could have been. Personally, I wonder if they would be best finding out what makes a great idea earlier in the process, invest some more in this area to save all the half done, canned along the way and under developed games we seem to get more than ever.

But, yeah, it's always sad as every game is SOMEONE'S idea, someone's baby and as such it's sad not to get to see them being played. Notr that we dn't all seem to have a bif backlog of unfinished, half finished, just started and not even started games year round anyway but, yes, still a shame.
