SFX-360: Wolfenstein 3D Review

SFX-360 writes: "Doom may have made the first person shooter genre popular, but it was Wolfenstein 3D that started it all. The classic shooter has finally arrived on Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network bringing a new level of nostalgia to the genre. To most new-school gamers, Wolfenstein 3D is thought of as just another piece of retro crap. Here's a lesson for all you young whippersnappers out there: without Wolfenstein 3D, there would be no Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, Unreal, Halo, or even Call of Duty so give it the respect it's due.

When Wolfenstein was originally released back in 1992, id Software's shooter was met with plenty of controversy over the use of Nazi symbolism with the Swastika and the images of Hitler. Considering the fact that I'm Jewish, I also found these symbols offensive, but then again I also know that this is just a game. Of course most U.S. Senators were more concerned over a fighting game from Midway which allowed you to rip someone's spine out. Go figure, who cares about Swastikas when you can knock someone's head off, rip out their hearts, or uppercut someone into a pit of spikes. The Super Nintendo version of the game removed all Nazi symbolism, replaced the attack dogs with mutant rats, and replaced all the blood with sweat. Good news for us is the XBLA and PSN version are 100% authentic to the PC original..."

New Order
New Colossus
Old Blood

I really wish they'd remake Return to Castle Wolfenstein from the ground up. Easily the best of them all.
