IGN's latest Review Debacle: Unless it's above an 8, kill yourself

Gamer Limit writes: "This is a direct response to the hundreds of comments that IGN received recently due to their Prototype review. After giving it a 7.5, which is a respectable score by their own standards, IGN received a myriad of these types of choice words:

"kongii29: go review something else pussy u dnt deserve to review a great game like Prototype...go fuk urself..hahahahaha..."

Really? Run for the hills, reviewers! If you give any popular game less than an 8, prepare to be assaulted over the internet (and physically, when the fanboys track you down..and they will). So what exactly goes into scoring a game below an 8? Is a 7.5 really that bad?"

7.5 is a good score,it was probably people that thought it would outperform inFamous that are raging.

Spike475431d ago

even though Prototype is multiplatform lol

chrisjc5431d ago

My absolute favorite part of the debacle is the overwhelming amount of PS3 fanboys that insisted Prototype was a 360 exclusive, and reveled at the fact that it was "bad".

Mu5afir5431d ago

Seeing as it's got released on the PS3.. I seriously doubt people who own PS3s even care. The vocal minority seem to be those who expected Prototype to outperform inFamous.

RKRigney5431d ago

I hate douchebags who attack reviewers just for doing their job. There's ZERO defense for these people; they're just stupid.

Lifendz5431d ago

7.5 is a good game. But I think most people don't buy a game unless it gets an 8 or higher.

Downtown boogey5431d ago

for someone into the genre. Otherwise there are so many games ABOVE 7.5 so it doesn't justify the purchase, frankly... Unless you have this feeling in your guts!

vhero5431d ago

Wow gump you actually said something that wasnt MS biased for once... probably because you know there is no win here. I agree totally with you MS fanboys are just peeved this doesn't match up to infamous not by a long shot. What made it worse it that infamous got scores around the region of the big boys like GTA 4 and MS fanboys wanted this to get the same even though ps3 owners had this game too. However 7.5 isn't a good score but its not bad.

LastDance5431d ago

haha...I wish I was a reviewer and had fanboys come up to me in the street.

Prototype is CRAP... its that game you play to make yourself even dumber than you were before.

It is a forgetable game.

Cheeseknight285431d ago

You are just part of the problem. Can't you simply accept that inFamous and Prototype are BOTH good games? Depending on one's play style, one will be better than the other, but they are both good games.

IdleLeeSiuLung5431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

This is why a think a grading scale such as A, B, C and so on is much better system (at least for the US).

A numeric score is too fine grained to reflect the opinionated reviews i.e. is a 8.9 game better than a 8.7? What about it makes game A 0.2 better than game B? Also anything below 80% is automatically considered negative which further exacerbate the problem with misunderstandings.

Perhaps a solution is to use the 5 star system: poor, bad, average, good and excellent.

Venomish5431d ago

will fanboys try to say dante's inferno better than god of war 3 ??
:) time will tell

memots5431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

Again we know which fanboy are at fault here.

The Fanboy that needed this game to do better than the "other" game that is on the "other" console that people keep comparing it too. The fanboy that don't have much to play on their console and need the "other" game to "failz" and didn't.
Who the known the one i am talking about ?

.

alas this is a sad time in video game history the internet definitely brings the best and the worst out of people.

Greywulf5431d ago

Its the same people who are upset that prototype is a "Flop" by their own definition...

I'll go ahead and say people with the option of owning both Prototype, and Infamous have absolutely nothing to be upset about, or angry, or disappointed.

Idiots, thats who.

Look at movie reviews, GREAT movies barely get 80%. Look at some of the things you've enjoyed on metacritic. Everything doesn't have to be 90% to be good. 7.5 is just fine, but when people pretended that 7.5 was a disaster, and 90's is the onlything playable. Thats when you get into trouble. Because then you realize you only have a handful of 90's to play, and you played them all in 2007 already.

WEL5431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

For X360 followers Prototype is the better game cuz they don't have anything more to play aside of multiplats. For PS3 owners the better game is inFamous just for the fact that it is a PS3 exclusive.

Thisis a debate that nobody will win. The same with the GT vs Forza comparison, but I'm not saying that is not fun to argue but not all the time.

In both cases I think

GT > Forza
inFamous > Prototype

I don't know if I'm being biased but that's my true opinion about all this matter. GT is one of the reasons for why I got a PS3. I have played Forza 1 and 2 a lot and neither of those games are better than GT3 or GT4. Just wait until GT5 comes out to compare reviews.

The only bad thing reviewers will be saying about GT5 is that the game's so realistic that it takes away the fun or something like that just for the sake of lowering its score.

gaffyh5431d ago

Prototype is a good game. 7.5 is a good score. Greywulf is right the only people complaining are the ones who have their own definition of AAA i.e. Must be 90%+ metacritic. welcome to the world of ps3 owners who have sufffered through several biased reviews but we still know that uncharted, r&c, folklore, vc are AAA cos we use our own minds and dont rely on some bs aggregate score

Pika-pie5431d ago

I hear Greg Miller still gets e-mails asking him to re-review Lair.

kevnb5431d ago

but did you read the review? Its retarded.

JokesOnYou5431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

"it was probably people that thought it would outperform inFamous that are raging." -Gump

Wrong, as usual...whoever brought the game either likes it or he doesn't. So the only people who should be upset is the small minority who already brought this game and for whatever reason regretted it. Why would any gamer who's having fun playing Prototype care that IGN scored infamous better? Are the folks who liked infamous more "raging" because GamesRadar gave infamous a 7, while they gave Prototype a 9? Sure we like to see games we enjoy get credit but if you are that brainwashed that you end up crying about a game you, yourself enjoy playing then you're ultimately the fool.

I've been playing it since the day it was released, my only semi-complaint is the graphics aren't the greatest but far from bad considering its an open world game, everything else about Prototype is great, its a blast to play for an hour or two constantly upgrading and discovering new tricks. This game is so much fun, the kind of people crying over a score from one site probably should spend more time playing the game instead of crying like sony extremists do about every site who offends their Sony God.=

JOY

YogiBear5431d ago

your opinion is your own but Prototype is not that good. Since you don't have the good fortune of having a choice like I do Prototype will just have to do for you. One more thing... Jack Nicholson was a better Joker.

JOY

Bathyj5431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

Uhm, thats why they care. The fact they like the game, but cant play inFamous is the reason they dont want Prototype scoring lower. Plus cos its a PS3 exclusive, it has to brought down.

C'mon JOY, you know this is true. The XBox faithful have to bring PS3 games down, or try to find an equivilant.
Its the same reason the said Banjo was as good as LBP.
Its the same reason they said Pure was as good as Motorstorm.

Next it will be Bayonetta is better than GOW3. *muffled snicker*

Please dont even try to tell me this is not the case. I dont hear any PS3 fans complaining that Prototype scores lower than inFamous.

kevnb5431d ago

not that it scored lower than infamous, but the review itself. Read the review, its terrible.

JokesOnYou5431d ago

"Since you don't have the good fortune of having a choice like I do Prototype will just have to do for you."

-And why would that be? Last I checked my ps3 sitting next to my 360 can still play ps3 games, lmfao you talk as if you "know" me....I've played the infamous demo, but really I had decided awhile back to buy Prototype first since the chaotic gameplay/insane powers mix was a little more attractive to me, I'll likely pick up infamous sooner or later.

@ Bathyj, NO you're wrong, notice I said why would any "gamer" care....I haven't seen an outcry by the "xbot community" because of IGN's score, So simply because a few xbox extremists and a over abundance of sony loyalists on this site NEED a game they prefer to score better on EVERY site vs a game in a similiar genre to justify their purchase does not mean any normal gamer cares that some sites will review Prototype lower than infamous. All I can see is overall infamous has slightly better reviews judging by the meta avg, lol but its definitely nothing anyone who enjoys either game should be crying about, well in this case not unless they are a brainwashed "xbot" who needs IGN's approval to enjoy Prototype.

JOY

Serg5431d ago

Well I haven't read the review and won't, already finished the game in some long nights. And honestly, I love it. I can understand why a lot of reviewers gave it a 7-8.x. Don't get me wrong the game is pure fun, but it has a lot of things to be picky about a gamer can easily overlook while playing it (Did I mention I love the game and it's pure fun?), a reviewer, however, can not. In comparison, the graphics are bad, the missions are repetitive, the story is something that has been done a hundred times already. A professional reviewer can't ignore this, a gamer can, too bad a lot of people will be turned off by the scores the game received, but the reviewers have to do their job right, even if it hurts.

Prototype is a good example of why the job can suck at times. In a scale out of 10 I would give the game:

Graphics: 8
Story: 6
Gameplay: 8
Sound: 9

Which is, like it or not, a 7,8. But the game deserves a 10 just for the fun factor.

For those who care:

Graphics:

The Textures aren't really good, the Buildings are plain and look the same, the enemy models aren't detailed. Though it gets bonus points for animations, they are very smooth and Alex moves just like you would expect someone to move while running past a Ferrari. Also there is a ton of stuff going on around you, explosions, packed crowds, gun fire and you are in the middle of it. View distance is also very good.

Story:

A virus breaks lose in a city and renders it's Resident(s) Evil? Yep, that pretty much sums it up, well, the infected people are undead, some of them, like Alex Mercer (the "hero"), mutate and become something else. Has been done an awful lot of times before and I don't think I need to go into details, find out for yourself, you won't be disappointed in the game.

Gameplay:

Running at insane speed, climbing, no, "running" a building, gliding across the city, Prototype gives you movement capabilities only Superman can top. The superpowers you unlock while playing through the game are awesome, but sadly some become useless very quickly. You have a wide variety of abilities and attacks to choose from and all of them are just great. But here ends the creativity, the mission design is repetitive throughout the game, kill these guys, blow this up while killing these guys, protect this by mutilating more of these guys. Some of the side missions are good, like the Runner missions where you have to move checkpoint to checkpoint against the clock, but overall not much variety here either. The AI is, well, dumb, as you have probably seen in the trailers you have that awesome power to turn into the last person you consumed, while running away from the military, you can switch instantly whenever you like, if you manage to get out of sight, switch and the heat is off. Climb the highest building, switch, and listen to the helicopter pilot saying he lost you and he sees nothing suspicious, well, a guy standing on top of a skyscraper is a usual picture, right? Also you can run at superspeed, jump, glide with eyes on you without anybody suspecting you.

Sound:

Sorry but I can't wrap my mind around the sound right now. But I have virtually no complains about it, at least as I recall from playing the game. While writing all this stuff I feel like playing it right now.

My advice: Buy the game if you can spare some money. It's worth it.

Bathyj5431d ago

Ok Joy, you are perfectly correct. "Gamers" need not care, about either IGN's score or the metascore as you pointed out.

I guess I was generalising in this case about that group of people whose name you said but I wont. (I get banned, everytime I say it.)

Never the less, the situation I mentioned with other PS3 games still exists.

KRUSSIDULL5431d ago

7,5 of 10 is good it means 75% and that is Very Good grade in the school of Sweden :P

kevnb5431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

that's not how you rate a game. Story isn't even important in most games, unless the game makes it important (metal gear solid, most jrpgs). gameplay, graphics, sound, value, and tilt was the old gamespot categories, and the worked well.
So lets break it down

Gameplay: 10- the game is very fun
Graphics: 7 - they arent that bad, and I would rate them lower if there wasnt so much happening on screen
Sound: 9 - good use of sound
Value: 8 - the game is a bit short
Tilt: 9 - loved the game

so this gives us 8.6, doesn't that sound accurate?
or even igns rating system is ok, presentation (which can include story if needed), graphics, sound, gameplay, lasting appeal.

edgeofblade5431d ago

We need to abandon numerical scores. Numbers lie, and who in their right mind can tell an 84 from an 85. I don't think the human brain is capable. What we really need is a skewed, symbolic curve to score games on. It's what we are doing already, anyway.

The more symbolic and less granular the rating system, the more fanboys can find common ground. The reviewer could say it's a low 4 star while the fanboy says it's a high 4 star. Either way, it's still a 4 star.

5 stars = top 5% of all games
4 stars = next lower 10% (85-95)
3 stars = next lower 15% (70-85)
2 stars = next lower 20% (50-70)
1 star = next lower 25% (25-50)
0 stars = anything lower than 25%

I remember when Edge gave Killzone 2 a 7, and all the Sony boys were raging, calling them biased like always. Even Dutka make a whinefest article about it. It's pretty hilarious. Anyways, a 7 is a good score. Look at what it says below the score: Good.

Obama5431d ago

The difference is Killzone 2 is averaging 9.2 while prototype is around 7 ish. Also you should take a look at Edge's reviews of ps3 exclusive games - they are all 7s.

Homicide5431d ago

It's actually an 85. Edge gave LBP a 9 and even gave it Game of the Year. Face it, not every PS3 exclusive deserves a 9. You guys whine about everything.

Amplitude5431d ago

LBP completely deserves that 9. Killzone deserves higher than LBP though, as it was the best FPS I've played in my life (though, Fall of Man's multiplayer was more fun imo).
And, If you're gonna say that PS3 fanboys whine about everything, you obviously have never read a 360 fanboy's comments. Most are filled with nothing but spelling errors (literally), and make zero sence whatsoever. Heres a comment from my Youtube page-

LMFAO. Every time i read that i laugh my @ss off. xD Anyway. Point is, 360 fanboys are 10 times more retarded than PS3 fanboys.
The end.

Homicide5431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

My mistake Steve.

@Axe, 360 fanboys are bad (all fanboys are), but I rarely, if ever, see them complain about a score.

Arnon5431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

I can openly admit that I am more biased towards my 360. But I in no way hate my Playstation 3. I've enjoyed it for COUNTLESS hours. But I can say without a doubt that I have rarely seen a 360 fan complain about a score. I also disagree on the fact that 360 fans are more retarded/worse/etc. than PS3 fans. This site has proven that to me. They can be both just as dumb.

I suggest everyone reads the article. He skips major features of the game such as how amazing the city evolves and how amazing the AI is. Like when people go into a panic and run into each other at 80mph, hitting people in their path. Cars pile up, people scream in the streets, infected civilians roam around mindlessly killing the innocent. We're talking hundreds of AI at once here. The game is not bad in the LEAST bit and it's actually one of the best Sandbox games I've ever played. The story is pretty good but I hate how it's told through confusing memories. It is a good plot though.

I honestly want you guys to read the review and give a completely unbiased look at it. Forget every other game exists and read and analyze it.

Defectiv3_Detectiv35431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

And it was a lot like Hulk:Ultimate Destruction, which is why I think some reviewers kind of panned it. The way you can run up buildings/throw heavy objects/use enlarged hand things.

I liked the stealth elements and how you could pick up weapons or get in vehicles. The skill tree was also quite robust. But the plot was weak and it felt like their should have been more to do in the city.

Overall, I would give it an 8.0.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos3d ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto3d ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger883d ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).

ChasterMies2d ago

Trevor in GTA 6 is a sadist and psychopath who dabbles in cannibalism. Should be top of the list. These game “news” sites should hire people that know games.

Six Activision Games I’d Like to See Revived Under Microsoft

As the world reels from the shockwaves of the seismic news that Microsoft is acquiring the proverbial swamp of the video-game landscape, Activision Blizzard King, it only seems natural that our minds should now shift towards what the fallout will be for presumably years if not decades to come.

Another Prototype would be awesome.

As for Singularity, I don't necessarily need a sequel, I just want to see Raven be able to flex their creative muscle again; not just be relegated to assisting with CoD. A lot of the old guard is still with the company.

That's part of what I'm hoping to see come from this acquisition. Revive teams like Vicarious Visions and Ravem to actually allow them to work on their own new projects again.

Crows90826d ago

As great as that would be the deal wont finalize until end of fiscal year 2023. Until after that date MS wont really have a say as to where resources will be spent. So we wont realistically see anything until perhaps 2026 or later.

LWOGaming825d ago

I think that’s a point that so many people are missing. Things will not change this year or next year at all. Maybe some changes might be apparent in 2024 but 2025/2026 is a good estimate of when things will really start happening. And I don’t think we will see as big a set of changes as some are suggesting.

TallDarknWavy826d ago

Those teams having not worked on anything, the employees find jobs at other companies, they don't just remain unemployed till someone at the publisher decides to revive the team, they need to eat lol

That said, this list of games makes me unexcited for anything outside of CoD that Activision has to offer. All games are in stale genres, like Guitar Hero, Simpsons Hit and Run, these are long surpassed genres that are going to be difficult to revive.

gamer7804826d ago

I want to see new IPs. Not a bunch of forced renovations of old franchises.

Gamer75826d ago

Why not a combination of both

gamer7804826d ago

@gamer75 if it is a combination it has to have my seal of approval. Such as a new Warcraft game or a new Warcraft mmo, or an action game based off the night elves orcs and humans if it’s a new IP. I’ll let you know after I talk with Microsoft

King_Noctis826d ago

Man I’ve been waiting for Protoype since the last one. Protoype could seriously be MS’ answer to Infamous (freaking loved that game as well, hope Sony make a new one soon).

porkChop826d ago

I'd love to see Raven take another crack at Heretic and Hexen.

MadLad826d ago

Ms bought Activision and everybody dancing for what? For cod? Ms want to atleast earn some money Back from those 70 billion dollars.... The only thing they count on is more gamepass subscribers via Activision cod, diablo and over watch 2 1st Day free at gamepass. If they decide to make them exclusive to xbox they Will lose profit from ps4 and 5 sales. As For a New ip or an existing ip like over watch 3,diablo 5 or anything else like a New transformers Dont you think that developers need at least 3 years to Do something decent?
Anyway my opinion is that ms want to make videogaming Just a subscription a la netflix and that ps5 will beat xboxsx in sales like ps4 beat xbox and xbox one x..... All the money ms spending It Will defentily make more gamepass subscribers as for games we all must wait at least 3 more years... And thats why ps5 will get ahead in sales they have more AAA in the pipeline already plus lets see their answer for gamepass... P. S i Dont support subscriptions from neither company and i didnt buy switch plus for n64. If they give me the option to buy n64 games then yes i Will buy them but i am not paying for a rental.
