Nintendo's Reggie Finds Natal 'Ironic,' Talks Facebook, Virtual Console

But this being E3 2009, even with Reggie Fils-Aime, our most urgent topic of conversation had to be the buzz-building Microsoft Project Natal.

"We have been very familiar with that technology," Fils-Aime said of the hands-free camera-and-sensor tech Microsoft debuted for the Xbox 360. "I have personally seen a lot of iterations of similar technology. Our first reaction is that it is ironic that, three or four years ago, the prevailing industry opinion was that prettier pictures or more horsepower were the waves of the future. And now it's clear from both of our competitors that physical activity in gaming is the wave of the future. It's also ironic that, for Nintendo, the future is here. The future is now."

but only when compared to the eyetoy :)

kinda reminds me of the Reggie from the ARCHIE comics.

Sarcasm5449d ago

lol that's an hilarious picture

R2D25449d ago

Thats one big NinteNDO CONSOLE.

N4g_null5449d ago

What is even funnier is I have friends playing golf with it right now and they love it. Motion+ is what we always wanted, gamers and devs.

It's really too bad the HD guys will have to wait on this also along with all of those hyped games also.

lol

Reggie is funny. Smooth with those words.

Deviant5449d ago

dude ..get your head out of his as$

MegaPowa5449d ago

Why would you say something like that cant a normal person say anything positive about someone without having an as$ like you call him a kissup :/

Seferoth755449d ago

Yeah loving motion plus so far. Gotta hand it to Nintendo for this one, they've once again changed gaming forever. The most ironic thing to me is the amount of people that once bashed the Wii controls but now want their own version. I tihnk the worst part is Sony which is almost directly copying the Wii in many ways. Yet Sony fans act like its completely different and totally original.

kissmeimgreek5449d ago (Edited 5449d ago )

atleast microsoft tried something new. and by the way, how much of the casual market does sony really think its going to grab? it s competing with 2 cheaper consoles that come/will come w/ motion tech in the box (or so MS say) and theyre gonna compete by having people buy a$400 console, $40 eyetoy and two remotes which are going to cost atleast $20 each? i just dont know how theyll do it.... well...good luck sony. if this works, ill be first in line for a new ps3

EDIT: id like to apologize, my comment was completely off topic i just had to get it off my chest...

CaseyRyback_CPO5449d ago (Edited 5449d ago )

No one has been saying EyEpet or ANY motion controls are going to change the way we game forever. It was all shrugged off as a Gimmick which you can backtrack n4g to see. Its just been a way to get casuals to play, and nintendo has enyoed success because of this.

Microsoft fans are delusional as usual, and you prove it as usual. Heres how it works, Nintendo created it. Sony copied it, and Microsoft copied everyone. The only thing here, is M$ has no real demos outside of things that are already done on current technology. Hell the Xbox360 game "you're in the movies" has hit detection from a body. The same ball demo could be created with it.

The problem with 360 owners is that they have 0 new game lineup, which is what e3 is about. They have 0 new ips, and they have 0 new exclusive franchises. So now they are pretending the same motion controls that Nintendo/Sony/Sega have already done, is the wave of the future. Look at all the silly Natal Stories. 360 fans are being ridden, as well as everyone thinking that Milo is real.

360 fans can't admit NATAL is a rip off of Nintendo AND Sony. Just like they can't admit killswitch and others had cover systems before gears. Which is why sony/nintendo people have to keep beating into your heads what the reality is.

You cant claim sony ripped of nintendo, and not do the same for M$. Thats the double standard. Motion controls are a gimmick, Natal has no titles that we know of illustrating the technology realtime, nor any game genres FPS/TPS anything. Just a buncha hype about the "Future"

because the present for M$ is nothing. They had nothing to debut at e3, because they spent all their time rushing to this generation of gaming, the HALO-mega blow didn't stop Sony. And now we are here.

Games you already knew were in the works since day 1.

Claiming "NATAL" is new after seeing Seaman/Eyepet/you're in the movies is the biggest joke on n4g.

heroicjanitor5449d ago (Edited 5449d ago )

It's almost as good as the original controller was meant to be. Nintendo has completely lost my trust and I doubt I will buy anything from them again this generation, besides Golden Sun. I will get the Sony one however, as they have treated me well and deserve my support.

Also Sony's controller appears to be more accurate anyway, as it can tell where you are relative to the screen without you needing to point it towards a sensor bar.

Seferoth755449d ago

@ Above,
If you think Nintendo lied to you it is only because you were very misinformed. I knew long before it came out that it didnt do 1:1 motion. Nintendo even said that before it came out and so did many gaming sites. Can you really blame them because you didnt take the time to learn about it before you bought it.

Also I dont really think you thought your excuse out for why Sonys is better. It's pretty much the same thing but what games are you going to be moving back and forth in that you wouldnt be pointing the Wii remote at the screen for aiming? Also I am not sure you have thought about how exactly walking forward into the TV is some how more beneficial.

ChickeyCantor5449d ago

" Nintendo has completely lost my trust and I doubt I will buy anything from them again this generation"

Its pretty sad, as we all know Nintendo is still gonna show up all those games you asked for anyway.

Sure don't by anything from them, yeah that really halps your gaming needs. You want something from them, but if they put it out you won't buy it. Perfect logic right there.

"for Nintendo, the future is here. The future is now" Really? with an overclocked Gamecube that struggled to compete even against its last gen rivals?

Sarcasm5449d ago

Correction, an overclocked Gamecube that has sold 50 million worldwide who obliterated they're rivals THIS GEN.

Nonetheless, let the Wii hate dissipate and die already sheeze. It doesn't affect the games on the 360/PS3/PC. I mean we still got our Gears, MGS's, Forzas, GT5's, Uncharteds, Splinter cells etc. etc. etc.

The Wii has no hand in messing up any of the great 'today-gen" games.

Why Xbox believes it must cut costs and close studios

Companies, particularly public companies like Microsoft, need to grow.

i mean its pretty simple, they spent close to 30 billion in acquiring activision, they thought they'd make it bk no problem, and that didnt happen.

its just shit that because of MS's miscalculation alot of people lost their jobs.

Jingsing1h ago

This is exactly what many people said would happen including the CMA and FTC. Lies lies and more lies and they allowed a $69 billion buy out to happen.

gold_drake1h ago

oh yeh it was 70 billion. that was my bad haha even worse.

thesoftware7301h ago(Edited 1h ago)

gold,

You can't be serious, right?

Do you think that MS thought they would make 80bill in a year & Half? They haven't even released titles under MS yet, lol.

But in fact, that A/B revenue is already paying off, look at the last earnings call. That $80 billion is long-term money, my guy, no sane person/company would think they would make that back in any short-term situation, it's a long-term investment.

Let's play silly then. If MS's reason for laying off staff and closing studios was due(which it really was not) to the A/B deal, tell me what Sony's reason was for past studio closures, the recent 900-person layoffs, closing Sony London, shutting down Dreams, and closing Japan Studio? Zipper? Psygnosis? cuts at all their internal studios.

Keep in mind, you are claiming MS's reason is because of the A/B deal; please explain Sony's reason.

Hofstaderman1h ago

You actually still defending them? Sheesh.....

gold_drake1h ago

this is not a sony vs MS debate. dont make it something it isnt.

and of course not, but im pretty sure they thought they'd make more money after the deal. they didnt, and closed off some studios.

its pretty insane to think there is any other reason for the closure of studios in this case.

romulus231h ago(Edited 1h ago)

(It really was) due to the Activision Blizzard deal and the loss of physical sales due to gamepass. You keep bringing up Sony in all your posts about this, stop deflecting and trying to change the topic, this is about MS and what they are doing.

BehindTheRows40m ago

Has nothing to do with Sony. Stay on topic.

notachance27m ago

once in a while you see someone too invested in their make-believe console war that everything happened has to be connected to said war…

a bit of banter between fans is normal, this crusade you’re doing now isn’t.

Chevalier7m ago

Wow idiotic. You bring up very old closures not that there haven't been recent ones from Playstations, but, seriously stop deflecting. This has NOTHING to do with Playstation.

Does Playstation got $3 trillion behind them and daddies wallet? No they don't so stop making a fool of yourself.

Xbox has never been profitable really and they just keep losing money so between their worst hardware sales, terrible 3rd party sales and now terrible 1st party sales.

Gamepass numbers that are no longer being announced shows their numbers after 3 years of missed targets has flatlined. Plus their recent gains up to 34 million were ONLY because they folded Gold members in too. Absolutely take your idiotic rhetoric out of here. Keep on topic without deflecting.

Ayayayay with these xbox/MS excuses.

They are going to use AI for a large portion of the game development process. Upper management need bonuses and the shareholders need more money. So, people will lose their jobs.

Skuletor1h ago

Maybe they were already using AI to make business decisions, which would explain why they closed Hi-Fi Rush's studio, then said they need more games like Hi-Fi Rush not long after that announcement.

Crows9051m ago(Edited 51m ago)

They shouldn't have bought any studios. Some is okay...but they went on a shopping spree...stupid

Einhander197218m ago

The better question is why did Microsoft buy publishers for a service they were subsidizing they knew couldn't support.

And why are so many websites trying to make people feel sorry for Microsoft instead of truly criticizing the fact they are closing studios and killing jobs that would have been fine if Microsoft themselves hadn't gotten involved.

Quit feeling sorry for Microsoft and start feeling sorry for the industry and the all the gamers who are actually losing out.

THIS IS MICROSOFTS FAULT.

RNTody17m ago

The first thing that happens after any major acquisition or merger is a consolidation of the whole new portfolio, which includes cutting any excess, bloat or portfolios that don't fit the larger MO of the big boy. So far, it's been par for the course with Microsoft and that's why gamers have been so against this acquisition. Tango Gameworks is the beginning. You think Microsoft wants to pay to keep small timers like Ninja Theory in business?

There is absolutely zero evidence to suggest that Microsoft will improve any of these studios, but plenty to suggest that they will get rid of what they don't need and hold onto the IP. The real agenda of the acquisition was always to acquire The Elder Scrolls, Diablo, Fallout, Call of Duty, Candy Crush etc. that will create millions in passive revenue stream for Microsoft regardless of where the games release. Microsoft simply wants their cut.

Because of Games Pass Microsoft has no interest in investing in new IP which is risky and requires creative talent they can neither nurture nor manage. Game Pass has also not grown in the way Microsoft expected it to, even post acquisitions. Therefore the logical thing to do, without serious money makers to release, is to cut as much cost as possible.
