Why it's still called Metal Gear "Solid"

Kojima called it the next major release of Metal Gear Solid - but it isn't Metal Gear Solid 5. Metal Gear Solid: Rising takes on a new subtitle, ditches the numbering, and swaps "Tactical Espionage Action" for "Lightning Bolt Action".

And say goodbye to the series stalwart.

"Hold on," said Kojima, with a sly smile, introducing the game to the 360 audience, "I didn't say anything about Solid Snake!"

But then, why is this still called Metal Gear Solid? For all that this title seems to be diverging from the series, including returning Raiden as the main character proper, the "Solid" doesn't seem to want to go away.

Good question!

Even though solid refers to Solid Snake, the game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater didn´t actually starred Solid Snake did it?

;)

ShinMaster5462d ago (Edited 5462d ago )

So was Metal Gear Solid 2.
It starred Raiden as well.

But that was the Raiden countdown (PS3/360)

Now I can't wait for what the Big Boss countdown will be...(PS3?)

Cwalat5462d ago

or....
it's because the game will be solid =P

gauntletpython5462d ago

Solid Snake was Raiden's code name as well before MGS2. But the "Colonel" changes it to Raiden so no one gets confused.

bushfan5462d ago

because it's in full 3D...'cause the transition from 2D to 3D

ehkinoh5462d ago

Not sure why all the disagrees. I'm pretty sure Kojima himself has said that "Metal Gear" (which followed "Solid Snake") changed to "Metal Gear Solid" because it was now in 3D.

JokesOnYou5462d ago (Edited 5462d ago )

What a day, so many great announcements and MGS: Rising is the icing on the cake. Oh how sweeeet it is. Sounds like it will Rise above the competition and "Sneak In" with "Lightning Bolt Action" gameplay in the place of those long cutscenes.

JOY

Keowrath5462d ago

Bushfan is correct, all you disagree-ers are WRONG.

Metal Gear SOLID WAS the transition from 2D to 3D, simple as that. Kojima made that claim back when the original released on PS1.

Check out Kojima's website to do with the Mask there's this long green/blue kind of matrix line i think its got do with Zone Of the Enders 3 imo.

Foxgod5462d ago

Raiden starred in Metal gear solid 2 as well, and that game was about stealth espionage as well wasnt it?
And had a Snake cameo.

PirateThom5462d ago

But it was also sloganed with "Tactical Espionage Action" and before Raiden got his "upgrades". There's not a single moment in MGS4 where Raiden does anything that could be considered close to stealth.

kingOVsticks5462d ago

Snake started off as the main character then the "Incident" happened no cameo. He appeared at the end but no cameo

Foxgod5462d ago

@above, you do know what cameo means right ?

And at further above, you are basing what MGR will be like, on cutscenes from a diff game ?

PirateThom5462d ago

Yeah, because Ninja Raiden is suddenly going to start stealthily sneaking around more or less making the entire premise of a game with Raiden as a ninja pointless.

This game will be Metal Gear Solid in name only.

I will refer to it as Rising from now on.

Foxgod5462d ago

YOu can call it whatever you want.
Your statements hold no ground thp, because oyu dont know the content of the game yet.

PirateThom5462d ago

"Lightning Bolt Action" says it all, really.

Foxgod5462d ago (Edited 5462d ago )

Yes, but lighting and raiden have something in common.
As raiden is the japanase god of thunder.
So that whole lightening bolt action has more to do with his name then what happens on the screen.

Otherwise he could have called it on screen hand to hand action.

kingOVsticks5462d ago (Edited 5462d ago )

do you know what cameo means? It means for someone to play a small roll. If you actually played MGS2 you would know snake was there just about the WHOLE TIME. He appears as "solid snake" at the begging and end but he was there with raiden through the majority of the game and he did not play a small role in the game. Purchase yourself a PS2 xbox,(PS3) and replay MGS2 before spouting nonsense

gamesmaster5462d ago (Edited 5462d ago )

come on, its an action game..

yes raiden is the god of lightning but, "lightning bolt action" emphasizing "action". as apposed to putting tactical espionage.

it says action, why are you denying this, its an mgs spin-off action game. Raiden has a blade, he's a cyborg ninja.. i give up.

STREET x KING5462d ago

At the end of the teaser it says "Sneak In" so it can still be a stealth game, probably.

badz1495462d ago

in Japanese, Raiden = ligtning!

god of thunder = Raijin!

just FYI

pixelsword5462d ago

You said:

"Yeah, because Ninja Raiden is suddenly going to start stealthily sneaking around more or less making the entire premise of a game with Raiden as a ninja pointless."

But aren't ninjas known for stealth?

You tell me, because you guys are always battling Ninjas, Pirate. ;)

The only reason it has Solid in its name is so it has a chance to sell to the MGS fans on the 360. Take that away and its no longer MGS and the fanboys have nothing to brag about IMO, I bet a sequal to the game will lose the "Solid" reference and probably be PS3 exclusive again thanks to sales.

Foxgod5462d ago

The original metal gears on the msx didnt have solid in their names either.

Solid is only meaningful to adolescents.

3sq5462d ago

"The original metal gears on the msx didnt have solid in their names either."

The original Metal Gear games were never released on MSX, they were released on MSX2, get your fact straight.

kingOVsticks5462d ago (Edited 5462d ago )

no one gives a crap that you're a 40 year old man who has a hard on for Microsoft. I shall call you Microhard! lol a little adolescent humor doesn't hurt anyone :P

Whitefeather5462d ago (Edited 5462d ago )

The Solid referrers to it having 3D graphics . Nothing to do with Solid Snake.

Foxgod5462d ago

Solid is referring to his codename, he had that in the old metal gears too.

Transporter475462d ago

Solid Refers to both of those, have you seen the conference on GC 09 when Kojima talks about the word "Solid" if you haven't watch it that will clear all the confusion

I’d have taken a few of those out. Prefer Sonic over Sonic 2. Outrun should be in there. Maybe even Pong as millions of people had fun with that even if it was repetitive. Final Fight pipped any Streets of Rage game, although Streets of Rage had the better soundtrack. Too many to list l guess. To me, retro gaming is the 1980s, maybe going into early 1990s.

Popsicle58d ago

Agree that the generational gap is too broad to really make a strong list. Need to tighten the years a bit. Hard to compare Pac Man with N64 games.
