Coregamers provides an insightful profile and interview article with Takayoshi Sato, one of the most important creative minds behind Konami's Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2 survival horror games.
XCOM and Marvel's Midnight Suns director Jake Solomon has founded a new studio to make a life sim game. Here's a new interview with him.
Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's plans to increase every department's margins.
"The plan to move Xbox games to other platforms is codenamed "Latitude" internally, and I know there's debate and unease at Microsoft about whether or not this is a good idea. More upcoming Microsoft-owned games slated for PlayStation are already being developed. At least for now, they're potentially obvious games you'd most likely expect. And yes, while it's true Microsoft is a prolific publisher on PlayStation already, it has typically revolved around specific franchises like Minecraft. From what I've heard, Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's mandate to increase every department's margins. "
Yeah, they are going to kill Xbox hardware.
"Yeah, they are going to kill Xbox hardware."
It's for the best.
Quit stringing along xbox fans and screwing over PlayStation owners.
An Xbox game on a Playstation. Never in my years of gaming did i ever thought this was gonna happen.
No way can they get rid of the hardware as probably 90% of game pass subscribers are hardware users.
Highly doubtful those users will move to PC or Cloud to subscribe there and the competition (Sony and Nin) will never have gamepass on their system.
If they want to keep the current subscribers, they need to keep releasing new hardware.
i think it will kill off the xbox brand. windows will be fine.
but there is and would be a chance that xbox might be killed off in the future. if they fail to make the money they put in. imo.
They wont kill it, but they will go fully PC while keeping xbox as a brand, and go multiplatform for the most part. They will also work tirelessly to diminish console gaming’s importance.
It would be best if Xbox goes the way of Sega, just make and publish games. I know I myself will not support them at all with buying games from them, you all can. 🙃
The Xbox brand will live for the games. I don’t expect Microsoft to entirely drop out of gaming hardware. They make Surface tablets and laptops. They’ll make Xbox branded hardware for those that want it.
"Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation"
Forza and Starfield next?
Starfield would be no surprise and there's the rumor that it will come to Playstation after the Shattered Space DLC, Forza (along with Halo and Gears of War) I find less likely but I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually end up on PlayStation too, especially if Xbox give up on hardware and go the Sega route.
Not to worried about forza. I'd rather see others like what inxile and obsidian are working on. Starfield sounds like it needs more time in the oven so let it cook first imo. If starfield and it's a small if does release on ps it'll be in the fall around the time for dlc or right at the dlc and come packaged with it.
In the words of Phil Spencer when he was talking about Nintendo last year
“It's just taking a long time for Microsoft to see that their future exists off of their own hardware"
100%!!
I wonder what happened to that dude that was always here posting those court articles with cartoons about MS spending all those billions in studios. He suddenly disappeared, I guess he doesn't like bad news when the green brand is in trouble. No new articles from him as of late...
MS doing permanent damage to console gaming. Dipshits couldn’t dominate, so they are setting fire to everything.
Will Microsoft drop direct x? If they want to develop games for other platforms than why would they use direct x, since vulkan works on windows too.
I'm proud to say I never "paid" for Windows, never have never will. I get it for free, been doing this for over 20yrs never had any issues with updates either. Windows 11 I'll get when I'm good and ready LOL.
That's ok as long as I don't give them money directly I'm good. You all can if you want LOL.
Windows 10 and 11 have built in features for data collection. If Jack Sparrow is sourcing those copies for you, then aren't you concerned that the crackers may have a line of code in there to help collect information about you to sell on the dark web?
Xbox is always gonna be here. You playstation guys are the one who help keep it alive because you're always talking about it. Xbox future isn't as bleak as some of you try and make it out to be. While some of you talk about games going here and there the sinilar things are happening at sony with PC. Guess who also benefits when games go to PC. That would be Microsoft.
"Guess who also benefits when games go to PC. That would be Microsoft."
Microsoft yeah not the Xbox division.
Anything that benefits microsoft is gonna benefit xbox. Some of you forget that it's not 1st party that carries the industry. It's 3rd party that makes the industry what it is. Sony and Nintendo can't carry the industry alone. It's just too expensive. Whether people like it or not Microsoft will always be part of the industry in some way. They aren't sega and atari. They are very cash rich.
You think PlayStation owners talking about xbox keeps it alive, you know that's not really a thing right?. xbox's future is as bleak as xbox is making it and that's solely on them.
You guys are hung up on xbox but what you don't seem to realize is that Microsoft doesn't need xbox to prosper in the industry. Look at how many ps5 sony has sold but yet they are putting games on PC. Just because you can sell 100 million consoles doesn't mean you will sell 100 million copies of a game. The rising cost of making games will make the hardware matter less. You will see more and more 1st party games go multiplat. It's already happening. The only difference is that Microsoft is being up front about it and Sony is slowly gradually doing it because they don't want to hurt their hardware sales but in the coming years it won't matter. 10 years ago no one thought that God Of War would ever be on anything but Playstation. Now look where we are. This is just the beginning. Financial gain has and always will be the priority. If you think sony only wants people who own playstation to play their games you are mistaken. Don't be fooled by the public persona the executives display. Get ready for even more changes coming. Personally, I don't think it's a bad thing that more people get to play games without having to own multiple consoles. I like the fact that I don't need a console to play God of War or Starfield.
This is where Nintendo is amazing. They are still very very shrewd in their own way, BUT they still play the long game. They understand and do respect their IPs. Microsoft likely looked at games as a natural place to expand 25 plus years ago when they were planning Xbox. The problem is games are similar to music in that somewhere someone has to truly care and love their craft be it music or games or other similar things. Microsoft just never truly was invested in games being in their blood. Miyamoto was or still is in many ways the face of games for Nintendo. He started with making great games. He rolls up his sleeves and is involved with his experience. No one at Microsoft can say such a thing. Another problem is video games is what Nintendo does. Microsoft, and even Sony, games are just another part of a larger company. Sony has been infinitely smarter. Maybe because they are Japanese, maybe because they took more cues from Nintendo in terms of how important it is to have exclusives that help define and represent your company. Microsoft had it with Halo and Master Chief, but they failed in 25 years or so to truly embrace the creation of video games. And so now they are likely destroying Xbox and will just become more or less a publisher with Activision and the other developers they own that they don't close. It is sad to me really, but they are using only corporate thinking. Nothing else. No pure love for games, their creation and understanding that that is what it should be about at the end of the day really.
Like you said the difference is Nintendo is a gaming company. Microsoft and Sony are companies that do gaming. Nintendo can't do what they do and vice versa. Nintendo doesn't need to spend and make as much money to stay healthy. I disagree with this Microsoft destroying xbox stuff. The industry is evolving and they are just reacting to the market changes. We will still be able to play xbox years from now. Microsoft isn't just gonna throw away the millions of fans they have gained in the industry.
Microsoft Xbox as grown and spent too much for it to service just a small group of Xbox gamers. Games Pass for the past 3 years as had flat growth. The potential base of core gamers that would even sub to a service such as Games Pass not being large enough to offset costs they need to go wide. Microsoft Xbox future as always been to become a publisher of games for all platforms which aligns with how all their other businesses are run. Only the worst of the worst console warriors suffering from self inflicted ptsd from some fictional warfare are opposed to Xbox's survival by going wide.
Sony has the same goal. They also want to publish on all platforms. They don't say it publicly but their actions are proving it. Neither is making any real money on the hardware. Sony just hired 2 CEOs and you don't do that if you are doing the same things you've been doing for the past 20 years. Their long term vision will most likely involve more Playstation titles on PC and anywhere else that's gonna benefit them in the long run. That includes putting certain games on xbox as well.
Xbox needs new leadership, once they open that door and port Xbox games to PlayStation, it won't be easy to close that door again in the future. In addition to this, it would be a massive betrayal to all the persons who supported the series consoles.
I bought a Series X back in 2022. My main reason was because I wanted to catch up on all the games I missed out on last Gen as I was gaming mostly on PS4. Microsoft also had a great conference back then however, to this date, those games haven't been released. Most don't even have a release date.
One of the main selling points of gamepass over PS Plus extra or Premium is that you get 1st party releases day one but one thing people have been overlooking is that those first party games are few and far between. This is why I never joined the crowed to pressure Playstation in copying the gamepass model.
When the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S first launched all the way back in 2020, console sales were not what either platform manufacturer wanted them to be. The pandemic slowed things down more than ever before, even though in the case of each next-gen console, all the units that were manufactured, sold.
Of course that didn’t last, and soon manufacturing limitations on the consoles were a thing of the past, and sales started to leap forward. For one next-gen console platform, at least.
I can see why Microsoft is putting their games on PlayStation with these numbers
Imagine how many copies of future games like Elder Scrolls VI, Blade, Indiana Jones and more they could sell if they went fully multiplatform.
Can we then stop calling this a console war? Sony rolling over xbox trillions with a few cross gen games.. what would it be when a new uncharted, horizon or tsushima 2 comes out.. even worse, with GTA6 no one would buy an xbox to play it..
while I see your point, i'm one of those people that dont really want to see a M$ logo, when I boot up, however good the game is, unless truly exceptional, I've got enough games from Sony and enough coming down the pipeline, plus the 2 free smaller games on ps+, why do I need to give Microsoft anymore money,
I usually play just GT7 and cod, you've got Gran Theft Auto coming, its over for microsoft, they shot themselves in the foot, and now have to hobble away, to the losers corner, sit there, and repent.,!!! hahaha
That's crazy man. Just because you prefer blondes doesn't mean you should turn down a brunette.
Does it matter they are basically third party at this point if your a Nintendo fan do you turn a game off because it was developed by Sega.
Also so many games are using Azure backend and display it in on their fine print so you'll not play any game using that to
@Purple101 At this point, Microsoft just wants to be the American Tencent, but also just happen to have a console available for those who want it.
I hate what they're doing to the industry, but I would play the next Elder Scrolls on PS5 or PS6 even if I had to look at a MS logo at the beginning. At this point, I'm just invested in the series. I didn't feel this way about Starfield, which is why I've skipped it. Worst case scenario, I'd pick Elder Scrolls up on PC if it didn't come to PS, but I've stayed true to my word - I have not, and will not buy another Microsoft console after 3 red ringed 360s. They've killed my console support for life. They showed how scummy they can be by knowingly rushing out a product before it was ready, just to try and capture a 1 year headstart.
If a MS logo shows up at the beginning of the next Elder Scrolls on a Playstation console, so what? That means Sony won and MS is just another publisher. Many of the large publishers are quite dirty, so it fits them well. I wouldn't mind seeing their console die off though and them solely take up this publisher role.
Yeah, I never bought another Xbox console after the 360. But at the same time you shouldn't find yourself captive to Elder Scrolls if the company behind it is very scummy. I dropped COD after Ghosts and I don't regret it the company has only become worse and I'm glad I never was part of funding that.
@Jingsing oh yea for sure. If I sense that Elder Scroll 6 is a shell of its former self w a trashy microtransaction setup, I'll probably skip it. I'll wait for previews and reviews but I sure am hoping for the best. I still play Skyrim to this day in VR.
I mean yeh, if they do produce something good, i've got a laptop, +HDMI cable to the telly, link a bluetooth dual sense (that I already own), and hey presto, I don't need an xbox,
but I can't see that happening, ps5pro will the the best way to play, with best graphics and sound, for me.
Personally I did not care for the Indiana Jones trailer. The combat looks too much like a Doom/Dishonored game to me. I think it could have been so much more. Which is too bad as I grew up with the movies and Raiders of the Lost Ark is still one of my favorites from when I was a kid.
If they can bring Elder Scrolls back towards Morrowind I would love it. If it’s like Skyrim it will be pretty decent but not great. Blade has potential. Hopefully it’s nothing like Redfall. I don’t really trust MS to make good games and rather not give them my money as they are bad for gaming. I’ll buy some games used, maybe but that’s about it
If the Jez rumour is true Microsoft has placed no red line around any first party game going to PS.
Although Jez has been acting like a spoilt brat not getting his way lately seems he's grown disenfranchised with Microsoft and is kind of lost given its most of his identity so I don't trust everything he says atm.
But basically if we see a halo game come to PS I'd call that a death kneel to the brand
Sony would probably be selling more if they stopped sending mixed signals about their future. Putting games on PC because you are taking data analytic advice from Microsoft about the future of consoles is folly and has limited their potential sales. Microsoft want Sony and the world to believe that consoles are done as a business so companies like Sony and Nintendo etc can end up serving Microsoft's platform. Remember when it comes to Microsoft "It is us or no one and the three E's" Don't fall for it.
MS has forced everyone’s hand in regard to PC. If the other two dont release on PC, they will be giving them an edge. Imo
Although i think Sony/PlayStation would be wise to release selectively on PC.
The way Sony are doing it though is very suspect, It almost seems like they are trying to tunnel their way out of Steam with a PSN back-end. They should have just launched their own store. Yes this would no doubt upset PC users but you just can't have everything on Steam as that means no market competition. Microsoft and Sony should only use their own stores. That way they can also enforce their subscription fee's (I don't think there should be fee's) like they do on console as right now they are saying people on console have to pay this fee but if you play on PC you don't. That is very anti-consumer.
While putting their games on PC would lose them some console sales, there's a large market of people that prefer consoles for their simplicity and convenience, I wonder if it would really effect them negatively. Well, I guess at this current point they won't be dragging PC players into a PS Plus subscription, so there's that.
I think after Xbox is gone they'll make a bigger push to move PC gamers over to PS, and they may halt momentum on the PC ports to do that. PC and Nintendo gamers will be the only ones left to convert

"The way Sony are doing it though is very suspect, It almost seems like they are trying to tunnel their way out of Steam with a PSN back-end"
That's not accurate, what they want is simply to be able to count PC users as PlayStation users. It's no different than what EA Ubisoft or Microsoft are doing. Heck, people need to sign up for extra accounts even on consoles to play some of their games, you can't play Sea of Thieves or Minecraft without a Microsoft account.
I'm not sure why PlayStation is being singled out like this, I get why it was a problem in Helldivers because they added it after the game was released which caused problems for people who already owned the game, but at the same time it was nothing that all the other major publishers weren't already doing.
“Putting games on PC because you are taking data analytic advice from Microsoft ”
Sony is putting games on PC because the market for people who spend $2000 on a gaming PC is different from the market that spends $500 on a gaming console. Also consider that consoles are sold at a loss. Sony probably makes more from selling Sony published gamed to PC owners than selling consoles to PC owners who would only use them play those games.
Selling more? They just had one of the biggest periods for a console EVER (20.8m). That’s not exactly something for them to scoff at. They’d just break more records by selling more, but it’s not a necessity.
Their balance of selling what they’re selling while making plenty of money is how you successfully run a console business.
PC gaming is a platform which is compatible with consoles. So many of keep saying the same nonsense for years ago. PC isn’t going anywhere and more and more games will be on PC
This doesn’t matter Xbox is the best box to use. Engagement is up, we can tell by the number of subscribers to gamepass, even though we gave it away for a dollar and it still isn’t growing due to it being a ponzi green is go.
I was an article headline before my Google feed refreshed that stated Sony moving forward will not be looking a console sales anymore, but rather playing time.
Plenty of former, disillusioned Xbox owners buying up PS5 now they know they can play Xbox games plus all the new PS titles on Playstation, whilst Xbox flushes itself down the toilet.
Never mind throwing the towel, they should just slump out of the ring already...its akin to beating a corpse at this point.
Since the moment MS entered the gaming industry, they've been obsessed with dethroning the most successful home gaming console brand in history with their cancerous ways and that was/is their biggest mistake. The thought money was one way to do it not counting the real threat which is the amount of GLOBAL loyal fans the PS brand has and the amount of gamers around the planet that never cared and never will for the green brand its games and services.
@Aloy pretty much. And the kivker is they had the right formula with the 360 well at least up to about 2010. Then they tried following the wii and right shot themselves in the foot. I firmly believe that from that point the could never right their ship.
@Hofstaderman the problem with the 360 model was pay for exclusives and pay more because the developer lost out on Sony sales. That wasn’t a sustainable strategy and that’s why they are here at this point
no that was PS2 vs. Gamecube/Xbox era. The slaughter deterred Nintendo from ever releasing another true console and forced MS down the spiral we see now.
If COVID hadn't happed it would be way worse.
And the truth is that xbox is almost certainly still being over tracked.
I can see that number rising, after the way Microsoft have been managing themselves recently too.
It's just bad decision after bad decision over there at Xbox. Some small things add up to put them in the position they are in now. Too much focus was placed on the game pass at the expense of the Xbox console. They should have known that the growth of Game Pass is dependent on the success of the Xbox console as that will be where the majority of their subscribers are coming from. It seems they must have laid off their marketing team because I can't remember seeing any type of ad for the Xbox outside of a press conference while I see PlayStation from time to time.
They are struggling to make games that can go head to head with PlayStation and I believe it was done on purpose as a means of cutting costs. The main issue with the game pass model is that it is not sustainable to put AAA games on that service on launch day without 100m subscribers. This is why we are getting games at 30 fps at launch on the game pass. They told us that these games had to be 30 fps because the series X was not capable enough when in reality, they are unfinished games because Redfall had a 60 fps update last year and Starfield is about to get a 60 fps patch on series X.
Microsoft has all but said they are exiting the Xbox hardware business. I can see them selling Xboxes like they sell Surface laptops, quietly. For Microsoft, the real money is in the software, and if they sell games on PS5, Steam Deck, and your smart TV, they make money.
Buying studios without a way to sustain them was MS’s stupid, very, VERY stupid strategy to counter Sony’s successful hardware sales. In addendum, MS just destroyed the legacy of several studios all in order to stranglehold the market. They were willing to neglect them and shave them off bin them just so no one else could have them. Like a jealous lover “if I can’t have you no one can!” Wt serious f MS? They deserve every foot they fall from grace (faux azz grace that it was).
MS needs to escape the sphere of PlayStation. Maybe a handheld as rumored would be a good escape plan.
Ps: Then again, that will put them in Ninty’s sphere. Haha
I think that's the reason for the wide margin. Me in the store, well who has the best exclusives and third party support and MS games. Its not Rocket science.
Again why the whole Beth/Acti pruchase is stupid. Xbox last roll of the dice in the console war. The writing was on the wall since last gen but they still refused to face reality. Globally gamers are just not into them.
No surprise. MIcrosoft Games(previously called Xbox) need to put their games on as many platforms as possible starting with the PS5, and I mean all on them if they want to continue to be one of the richest companies, publishers, in the world. That would be best for all gamers, devs, and their investors, and maybe the industry.
I think Microsoft stopped competing directly with PlayStation when they released Game Pass. Similar to how Nintendo stopped competing directly after the GameCube. Xbox consoles are essentially another avenue to where people can subscribe to the service. Microsoft as a whole has shifted to services and subscriptions in the last decade (it has been extremely lucrative), so Xbox is simply an afterthought. There’s not even an Xbox division in Microsoft either. There’s an entertainment division where Xbox is part of.
And this ladies and gentlemen is why we're hearing more and more about Xbox games going multiplatform. Their own platform has made it impossible to sustain themselves. More than 70% of the game sales came from PlayStation. It is a no-brainer they are doing this.
It didn't have to be this way. Microsoft Xbox could have remained a contender but greed and ignorance took over. While Don Mattrick screwed up royally, Phil Spencer is the one who dug Xbox's grave.
I will always enjoy my Original Xbox and 360, but after that Xbox was dead to me. Its their own fault. I still remember idiots defending Microsoft's 2013 DRMs plans. They never understood how truly wrong they were. And I still won't forgive Microsoft since they haven't done anything to make up for 2013,let alone 2014 - 2024. What a shame.
Every year since 2016 all we get from xbox is a high budget exclusive every qt and nothing happens, so it no wonder PlayStation is crushing xbox, phil and sarah should have been replaced years ago.
Actually MS communicated this in advance that the production is on hold for a time. This automatically also leads to less shipments. But yes, xbox sales got really slow.
