Sony rubbishes PS3 redesign rumour

E3's just around the corner and, as always, speculation as to what guns the big three platforms holders are going to fire is rife, the latest being of a redesigned PS3 to be revealed at the show next month.

According to reports, Sony is preparing to make TWO hardware redesign-related announcements, one widely believed to be a new PSP, and the other now speculated to be a (possibly slimmer) redesigned PS3.

Sony UK, however, has told us today: "We currently don't have any plans for a redesigned PS3", so you can throw that one out the window.

the rumor was about 2 possible hardware designs at the e3, one being the redesign of the sony psp and the other being unknown leading to the speculation of a ps3 slim.
Rumor could still hold some truth if there is another hardware design of a sony product.

If Sony have x number of current PS3s sitting on shelves and are bringing out a new design, they're not going to reveal the new design until most of the old stock clears or else people will stop buying them.

however, there is no shape redesign yet .. .. there is a newer model that runs cooler with a 45nm chip but the design is more or less the same other than a cooler chip, quieter heat sink and lighter weight.. but the overall dimensions won't change..

Is it details on an upcoming patch?

When the said PS3 redesign it still don't rule out a mother board redesign. I mean it's common knowledge that IBM & Toshiba are already producing 45nm Cell chips. So Sony could be in the process of swiching from 65nm Cell too 45nm Cell. Case could stay the same size, which would allow the chips more room to breathe.

This is actually a good sign. This means Sony needed to cover their ass.

They said the same thing about there being no new PSP.
They said the same thing about new price cut.

Look at this from a business stand point, if people think Sony has a new PS3 on the way, people might hold off on their purchases. Of course Sony will "debunk" it as to make sure their sales don't slump.

The thing I would question is SCEE's response. Instead of saying the regular old "We don't comment on rumors or speculation" They decided to just flat out deny it. It seems strange to me. They seem to just want us to stop talking about that. I think it might be true. The only hardware redesign I could think of is the PS3. They wouldn't redo the Ps2 again, and they can't redesign a hardware that isn't even out yet like motion control. Also what else could they do to the dualshock 3?

Their response makes me feel like they don't want us to talk about it at all so we don't ruin the sales of the current hardware out at the moment while they try to clear the shelves.

Never a truer word spoken sir. As someone who opnce had to wade through PR as a job(well part of it) I know full well that any manufacturing company will hide any redesign/pricing/hardware changes til the opportune moment and will outright deny stuff in the process too.

And this is NOT when Sony would want to let a leak get confirmed as it would hyrt currnt sales just before their best chance for a big announcement at E3. Not that I think they def will say different just that this isn't anything out of the norm and doesn't mean they haven't got a new design-everything's still possible.
