Confirmed: Ghostbusters timed PlayStation exclusive after Sony deal

GameZine: Sony Computer Entertainment today signed a deal with Atari to publish Terminal Reality's Ghostbusters, making the game a PlayStation (at least timed) exclusive.

In a surprise turn of events, Sony has signed a deal with Atari to publish Ghostbusters, just one month before its release.

The game is set to release alongside the Sony Pictures Blu-ray of the original film, but now only for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2. The PSP version will follow a number of months later.

SCEE's press release that confirms the exclusivity has been added.

I am pretty hyped for this game. I plan on getting my platinum trophy in Infamous, then playing through Prototype then hopefully plat Ghostbusters. 360 owners shouldn't be to sad you can still get the game on PS2 as well. Everyone has one of those.

Sony should have figured out what they wanted to do a long time ago. Terminal Reality said had this been only on the PS3 they could have done more with the new game engine, but obviously only until recently has the multiplatform approach been switched so plan on the game having the same number of ghosts on screen at once and all the other things they said they could have improved on to be what they are although they could have been better.

This hardly makes Sony evil. Like Da Truth said when MS would do this they try and make it appear as if the game is exclusive not just timed exclusive. Hence why I own the 360 version of Tales of Vesperia and NG2.

It makes sense for Sony to want to push the game some to coincide with the release of GB on blu. I'm doubting this will become an ongoing trend, but don't quote me on that.

Don't know if anyone remembers, but awhile ago when they were talking about giving the axe to this game it was rumored that Sony might step in and publish it. It just make sense, Ghostbusters is a Sony owned property, the original movies were produced by TriStar Columbia, a company owned by Sony.

I just can't wait for a new ghostbusters movie, I heard its supposed to have all the original cast plus some new ghostbusters, Seth Rogen is rumored to be one of them.

Remember, though, that Sony was a disjointed company, with neither the video, movie, music, or game divisions being on the same page. So even though the movie division had the rights, the game division never was going to act on that (until now, of course). Let's not even START on the whole music/game stuff.

That makes me think there's more to THIS than just Sony Pictures owning GB. There's a BIG underlining story here, and I think that's the third comment I posted (which is further down).

By the way, a bit of FYI for anyone who's curious, Columbia Pictures distributed the films, though the films were released way before Sony bought the company. In fact, the film was made and release when Columbia was owned by--are you ready for this?--COCA-COLA ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... ). That's right, the same people who make Sprite and Full Throttle once tried to get into the entertainment industry and bought Columbia in 1982 and sold it in 1990 to Sony. The two GB films were released during the interim.

Why is it when Microsoft scores a big exclusive, it's a big deal but when Sony, finally, does the same thing, it's looked down upon. You underestimate how many Ghostbuster fans there are from back in the day! I think Sony realises this. I also think the Blu-ray version of the film will sell very well. Go see the previews of Ghostbusters and you'll see how many fans are on the IGN team alone. We've been waiting for this for a loooong time as it's actually a spiritual successor to the last film they did with the exact same cast! Brilliant!

I'm a hardcore ghostbusters fan. I was about 10 years old during the peak of ghostbusters fame. I had the toy proton packs, all the movies and the jumpsuit....But even being a fan.

Like I said in another article. I don't own a console so waiting means nothing to me since console ports to pc are usually released long after consoles. But I probably won't even touch a torrent of this for years to come until me and some friends are bored and it gets brought up.

xbox owners specifically wouldn't buy it because it would have already been out on PS3 for weeks/months. PS3 owners have the disadvantage of not having as many honest reviews or friend's opinions to base their decision off of that comes with the advantage of the timed exclusive.

EDIT: We knew Bioshock was eventually going to grace the PS3 (2K Games just denied it at every turn even though we knew PS3 code was already MADE for the game). We STILL don't know the status of the GTA4 DLC (and good luck trying to get a true answer to THAT from MS, and even BETTER luck getting ANYTHING from anyone else about THAT).

We don't even know if this will actually be timed now or if it will be a full exclusive for Sony.

They made a big deal about 360 holding back the game in terms of technicality, so maybe this is Sony's way of finally ending the multiplat debate for good. It's likely the title rights cost as much as the publishing so Sony probably got it for free. It's a win win!

I don't think it's as simple as Sony buying an exclusive at all. Don't Sony hold the IP rights to GB as they made the films(well Columbia but Sony own them IIRC) so they already must've agreed to let this go multi?

Plus if Sony stand to make cash from the game why didn't Atari? Looks to me like there might be problems with the game, causing costs to spiral and Atari needed a way out. Maybe the game(and Atari?) would be in grave danger of disappearing completely if Sony hadn't done this.

Sony should have never let this become multiplatform in the first place since, you know, Sony pictures owns the rights to the Ghostbusters franchise. The Ghostbusters game was an example of how royally disorganized Sony has been, with different parts of the company being completely insulated as opposed to working together.

If they were really smart Sony would have brokered a deal to keep RB Beatles exclusive as well since they own half of the Beatles' catalogue, the other half is owned by MIchael Jackson by the way.

Maybe the Sony execs are just getting it through their thick skulls that they can use movie rights to leverage some of the movie-to-game adaptations in their favor. Here's hoping this is the start of a trend and they begin using their other assets like their status as a music publisher.

As far as L4D, ME2, and Gears 3 are concerned MS can keep them. The last thing we need right now is more PS3 games. Overall sales for games will be bad enough without adding more titles. Regarding to GB, I need to say that Sony pulled a MS on this one. Devilish move Sony. Everybody should be able to play GB regardless the platform, is a shame for 360 and Wii owners, specially Wii owners I know many of them have very highs hope for the cartoony look of the game. Now they all need to wait.

However, this might be a good lesson for 360 fanatics, they have been enjoying with all the timed exclusivity MS got for the 360, screwing up PS3 owners for a long time.

BTW, Folklore is a very good action rpg, beautiful, fun and got a very deep storyline 8.5/10 IMO you should try it, but I guess you dont own a PS3. Heavenly Sword is a masterpiece in terms of performing, story is awesome, visuals still puts most 360 games to shame, and combat is fun and varied. I know because Im playing both games right now. Couldn't be happier. When I go and read the reviews I feel they were too harsh with both games. That was 2007 and it was cool to be a PS3 basher those days, for some like LASTKnight troll still is.

I just think that it is a smart move by Sony in this instance in making sure that a well loved movie franchise that they own and are releasing a BR edition of the movies on it's 25th anniversary launches exclusively on their console.

The movie gets exposure as does the game on the gaming platform owned by the same company that owns the rights to the movies.

I don't like the concept of paying people for exclusivity as I believe investment in 1st party is the way to go for that but if this game will eventually be multi plat then I can actually understand why Sony want to ensure it is a timed exclusive.

The main difference with this game though is that Sony actually own the rights to Ghostbusters. Somehow they've managed to swing some form of exclusivity out of it and normally I'd not agree with it IF they indeed paid for it but IF they have paid for it then in this particular instance I don't see it as a bad thing considering Sony (at least a division of Sony) owns the rights to the franchise as a whole.

If Microsoft owned a movie studio and the Halo franchise was a movie before it was a video game, MS then sell the rights to someone to make a game, game is destined to be multi-plat and then MS say "oh hey you know what here's some money, we now own a gaming platform and want some sort of exclusivity on our machine, here's some $$$ - make it happen"

I honestly don't take issue with MS trying to get as much content onto their platform as possible. If they need to pay devs/publishers to get that content on their platform then fair enough. MS are still a newcomer to the console world and need to do these things to establish a foothold.

I don't even take issue with MS' habit of advertising a multi-plat game as if it were an exclusive. The way I see it is those ads advertise the 360, it's price and shows a game and say btw you can play this game on our machine. That's just damn good marketing as I see it.

I'll even go as far as to agree with you that what a company should be doing is getting DLC, exclusives and timed exclusives on their platform for their owners to enjoy, as you put it. I think MS as a relative newcomer to the console industry need to do this to be a major competitor and that is fine.

SONY owns the GB franchise, so why are people claming they are paying for a timed exclusive like MS does? Plus, it seems SONY isn’t claiming it to be a full exclusive, unlike MS does (Bioshock, ToV, ES, LP, etc), so I don’t see what the big deal is. Well I won't buy a PS3 for this or any other single game. I think it is a piss poor move, if the game sux or is mediocre the rest will know about it months and months in advance and most likely will not purchase when most likely they would have when it hit the shelves. P.S. = Im 25 years old and have fond good memories with the ghostbusters franchise. I invested plenty of time on NES with it as a kid. But I just don't understand the hype for this game. Maybe the novelty of reviving a old school franchise is tickeling some peoples fancies. But the novelty of a ghostbusters game, mainly this new one... just don't give me the urge to play it. Yet at least. Movie franchises gone to games, now-a-days obviously aren't all that stellar. The Wolverine demo I thought was thoroughly enjoyable though. This nonsense has really got to stop, PAl games coming out way after the NTSC release... i thought them days were over and done with back in the SNES and Mega Drive era, but seems its becoming more and more prevelant.

This is not good enough, shows how much they really care about PAL regions.. considering the amount of money they make from us.... This is just a travesty!

first of I don't live in EU so this'll probably not affect me but I do feel for all the xbox and wii owners. some people say that the 360 deserve it but what about the wii have they done anything? anyway this is not about it being a timed exclusive, it's about Sony announcing it a month before release when every GB fan is so excited about it and BAM! EU fans who didn't buy their product don't deserve to get the game the same time as everybody else. This isn't a 'good' move it's pathetic!

In defense of Microsoft's "exclusive" deals, they at least give notice when they announce the game that will be exclusive. Sony went ahead and literally yanked this game ONE MONTH before release.

I believe this is sleazier than anything Microsoft has done.

Good job Sony, you just confused the hell out of a lot of potential buyers and pre-orders.

it's okay if they wanna time it but it's the way they do it that isn't right. they could have said a lot earlier at least they know what to expect not pulling this kind of stunt during the final month of release. what's stopping sony from pushing it further when fall comes so that they can profit more?
