TeamXbox: Virtual On Review

In terms of features, Virtual On isn't the most robust of XBLA converts. The aforementioned color customization is a nice extra, as is multiplayer modes for both Live and System link Play. Leaderboards and a host of Achievements (see below) are standard fare, as is the arcade-perfect single-player game. A Score Attack mode is included for players merely looking for leaderboard rankings as well. Furthermore, Virtual On doesn't appear enhanced graphically, as some of its classic cohorts have been for XBLA. Virtual On is still good enough to get by with little more than its original DreamCast functionality because the original ROM was quite special, but don't expect much more than online play when it comes to upgrades.

Review - Virtual On: XBOX 360 Arcade (TheJRE.com)

Back in 1995 Cyber Troopers Virtual On hit arcades in the US like a sack of bricks. With it's dual joystick layout to control giant battling robots in arena style combat SEGA had quite the sensational hit on their hands.

Some games just don't age well. Soul Caliber 1 was ok, this....not so much.

Gamespot: Virtual On Review

Most mech games of late feature grimy metallic monstrosities in dystopian worlds, taking their cue from the harsh sci-fi landscapes of Battletech. Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram, however, recalls a simpler time, when brightly colored giant robots with huge Sega Dreamcasts on their backs cheerfully blasted one another to smithereens in pristine environments. Don't let the bright visuals and upbeat music fool you into thinking this is a simple game, though. On the contrary, its gameplay is complex and esoteric, and the game does little to help newcomers get acclimated to its nuances. If you're willing to dedicate the time to it, though, you'll find that this mech combat game's deep, fast-paced action can be immensely rewarding.

The Good:
* Exciting, fast-paced tactical one-on-one combat
* Great competition available online
* Colorful, inviting graphics
* Good variety of mechs to choose from

The Bad:
* Daunting complexity makes learning the ropes very difficult
* $15 price point is a bit much

Modern-Gamer: Virtual On Review

Modern-Gamer writes: Back in the mid-90s the arcade scene was one of diversity; and all type of games had their place. From fighting games like the Street Fighter Alpha series to the large start units like Crusin USA. Every game made an impact. One of the biggest games to make its mark on the arcade scene was Virtual On. With dual joysticks and one of the best realizations of mech fighting, Virtual On was a game ahead of its time. Now 13 years after its first release, can Virtual On still hold up to today's gaming standards.
