Editorial: Don't Blame Piracy on PSP Woes

GameStooge's Jordan Lund reacts to Dille's claims that piracy is behind the problems of the PlayStation Portable.

Excerpt: "But none of this will matter if the games don't end up being purchased. Games don't get bought, retailers don't order them, cycle repeats. I ran into this problem just today trying to run down a copy of Samurai Shodown Anthology on the PSP. It's a minor title, so most stores didn't even bother ordering it expecting sales to be negligible. Out of 6 stores, I found one copy of it for the Wii and 0 PSP copies. The PSP version isn't even listed on either the EB Games or the GameStop websites...

...What he [Dille] fails to explain is how piracy is just as big a problem on the Nintendo DS via the R4 device, and yet it doesn't seem to have impacted software sales to the degree that it has on the PSP."

DS caters to a young audience, while PSP caters to an older one that's inherently more tech-savvy. You don't typically see 6 year olds going online and buying R4 cards, then installing Bittorrent to grab free games.

anh_duong5499d ago (Edited 5499d ago )

plus a lot of ds gamers are also older (geriatric older) people and girls who aren't as into piracy as your typical hardcore gamer ..

however it seems like flash cart are starting to hit the mainstream ds market hence the big deceleration in ds games sales in many of the new released titles - notably gta-ct and pokemon.

GTACW suffer from this too, about 90K sold and 55K "D/l'ed"

and the DS is WAYYYYYYYYYYYY easier to get "hacked"
all you need is to buy a $10 item and that's it...
no modding/flashing anything at all...
unlike the psp which you got to be careful or brick

be_wrong5499d ago

the 360, wii and ds even has p!rated games but they still have sales rocketing high, piracy isn't really the issue in gaming sometimes.

raztad5499d ago

you got it all wrong. The problem is software not hardware. Console holders and especially devs, make money from games. Hardware sales could be rocketing because the piracy but at the same time software sales decreases. Im aware that this seriously hurts developers, and I always try to get my psp games "the right way", thought my psp is CFW and I've played more than one backup copy on it.

Yi-Long5499d ago (Edited 5499d ago )

... in fact, pretty much the main reason so many people have bought a PSP, is because it can be modded!

The big 'problem' with PSP is that it doesn't realise it's a handheld machine. Instead of making great new original games that fit the purpose of a handheld-console, most of the games are just ports of new and old games, many 3D, with less-than ideal controls.

You have a great machine for on the go, so make great original games for that: 2d platformers like a new Sonic platformgame (sprite-based), original RPG's and Pokemon-style games, and other stuff that will work great on a small screen and is quick to pick-up-and-play.

Sony should not try to make the PSP into a portable PS2 or PS3, but treat it for the machine it is: a handheld! They need to understand the differences between the needs of an 'at home' console gamer, and the needs of a 'handheld-gamer'.

The problem is, they don't understand that.

Piracy is an issue, but it's an issue because people think many of the PSP-games aren't worth paying for. And in many cases, they're right. Why pay for yet another port if you have already once paid for the original game on your old console!?

If the PSP couldn't be modded, the system would have sold ALOT LESS.
(Same thing for the DS btw).

koehler835499d ago

I will admit first that it is entirely within my capability to pirate any PSP game I see fit. Having said that, it's a bit stupid to blame piracy for the lack luster game sales on PSP when you have to go back a YEAR to find a single game worth pirating.

Take some responsibility for your inaction Sony. Admit that in 2008 there were only THREE games worth purchasing and you may be in the mindset to start dealing with the PSP's real issue: A pathetic lack of software and an ass-backward approach to 'expanding' it's feature set.

This will def be easier to play on tv than originally designed. I remenber hooking psp to ps3 to use a ds3. Cumbersome but it worked. Its a good spin off.

MrBaskerville718d ago (Edited 718d ago )

Hope we will get Valkyria Chronicles 2-3 and Carnage Heart at some point. There's a bunch of psp games I never got a chance to play.

monkey602718d ago

Good shout! There's few PSP games I'd care to have on current gen consoles but Valkyria Chronicles is definitely one of them

Aggesan717d ago

VC3 doesn't have an official version in english though. There's a great fan-translation though.

Nineball2112717d ago

*shouting* THEY SAID THE GAME RATING..... oh, nvm.

Hauntedasylum8718d ago

I didn’t know this title existed, so when I saw the headline, I thought a new Resistance was being made. Man I miss that series!

cluclap718d ago

That's because it's the worst in the series. It was good for a psp title though.

darthv72718d ago

Burning skies takes that distinction (worst). This is better than that.

Profchaos717d ago (Edited 717d ago )

It was actually a great game probably above the original they gave the character a personality for one.

Maybe your thinking of burning skies

Why Resistance Was So Incredible

While the studio is best known for Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet, and Clank, and Spider-Man back on the PS3 the studio broke from creating platformers and made one of the highest regarded science-fiction first-person shooters of all time. This was Resistance and it remains one of Sony's most acclaimed and dormant franchises.

Really wish Insomniac would bring back Resistance!

darthv721098d ago

Agreed. Until they do a new entry, I'd love to get the two portable games remade into console versions. Maybe in a nice compilation with the mainline titles.

monkey6021097d ago

Burning Skies wasn't a great game.
It was only a couple of hours long and there was nothing memorable about it.

I'd love a new entry

darthv721097d ago

^monkey, hence why it should be remade into a better version.

SullysCigar1098d ago

Resistance 3's campaign was gorgeous for the time - and an awesome game to boot.

monkey6021097d ago

I remember being put off by it because McHale wasn't the MC but it turned out to be my favourite campaign

CBaoth1097d ago

by and large though the Resistance IP featured many protagonists (4 altogether I think if you include the portables). One of the reasons I enjoyed it was not being shackled to individual story arcs. Very rare for a major franchise.

Army_of_Darkness1097d ago

My favorite resistance game as well! It seriously had creepy, scary a$$ moments bro! It made me want an action horror game from insomniac!

Mr_cheese1097d ago

Remember playing this through online co op with the move controller and gun attachment! What a game!

BlackIceJoe1098d ago

I've said in the past I'd like to see this series return and have it take place years later, like in the present.

I'll give you an example if I'm not mistaken the last game ended in the 50s, so if it was to take place some time in the 2020s you'd have an opportunity to see how the world changed after the fall of Chimera and all the new technology that came out of that war.

Just like in our universe we all know WW2 happened, but we never experienced it, so if the next Resistance game takes place years later so too would people in that universe know a war look place against the Chimera, they just wouldn't know what it really was like.

So getting to see how that universe would respond to the Chimera reemerging would be interesting.

Imagine a little kid talking with his grandfather about the war and the kid just thinks it was just a made up bed time horror story and what was said was worse than what really took place, but now that the Chimera come back the kid will find out why years later the old timer adults were still waiting for the Chimera to return.

I think there is great potential for this series still and I really believe the best way forward for Resistance is make it have a time jump too.

So hopefully this series will return.

Dragonopolis1097d ago

Great Idea. I'd play that version.

Resistance was a great game and of all the remasters.... I would play a great remastered version of resistance series as well

waverider1097d ago

I was blown away when i played for the first time Resistance on the PS3. Great Game. Also liked very much an played for hundred of hours the Co-op of R2. The SP campaign of R3 is also excelent. I really hope that Sony and Insomniac annouced the Remaster of the Series and a new chapter. They got story to do that.

Jambola121097d ago

Resistance 2 was one of the first few games i played on ps3 and I loved it, would definitely finish that again :D

Chevalier1097d ago

I loved all the Resistance games. But part 2 online was amazing. The Marksmen for the Spec Ops type class when it was fully upgraded was such an amazing weapon. Oh man I wish they release all the games again and let us play part 2 online again.
