Kilts in a twist as Andy Murray labelled 'English' by Virtua Tennis

SEGA has been left a little red in the face, which pales literally to some of the red faces in Scotland over *their* Andy Murray getting pinned as English.

According to Tam Coyle, a Tartan Army spokesman, this error "is a new low." SEGA is working to fix 'the issue' in Virtua Tennis 2009 to prevent a flood of angry accents getting louder.

I'm scottish and I know for a fact that people here will be sending hate mail to SEGA. It's one thing being called British, but English!, Alex Salmond will be up in arms in the scottish parliment!

i'm not a Brit but I've lived a year in Scotland (Glasgow) and a year in England (London & Kent)and I have to say, I wouldn't mind to be called Scottish but English?! No way, that's about as bad as being called a German!

Some complained when Lewis Hamilton was labelled English and not British claiming that Murray is never refferred to as Scottish but British. Maybe I'm just not noticing it but here South of the border it seems this really bothers the Scot's!

EDIT: My grandfather is Scottish and I'm proud to have roots there but I really hate Alex Salmond. He is the most pathetic and loony MP in parliament. He constantly advocates Scottish independence and then wants the English to supplement Scottish mortgages. What the hell! Idiot. I think he knows deep down that the home nations need each other. Scottish independence would severly weaken all the countries involved.

Murray was from Scotland, so he represented Britain. Tim Henman was from England, but was English.

Im also Scottish, and although i have no real qualms about being called Brittish i can see why this has raised a few eye-brows.

If Andy Murray is reffered to as Brittish in the tennis world then why the hell does he have a St. Georges cross emblem next to his name, rather than a Brittish flag? The fact that its likes this means it better have St. Andrews cross next to his name in the final release and not the Union Jack.

U'd think Sega had there facts straight since he's supposed to be on the Cover?!

All those times when we have had an English character as British with the British flag but a Scottish character almost always gets the St. Andrews cross but finally we have a game with the St. George cross instead of the union flag and English instead of British and the guys not even English.

This is a huge oversight and Sega need to rectify it.
He's Scottish or British whichever one he's happy with and I believe he's happy with either but saying he's English isn't even getting it close.

We don't have a problem when people are called English. It's when someone on the TV from England looses their British but if they win their English and if someone from Scotland looses their Scottish but if they win their British.

For a Scot to be called English is a far greater insult that being mistaken for British.

Get butt hurt when you call them English. Thats a good thing to know. Its kind of the same thing here when you mistake a Native American for a mexican. Its really hard to tell sometimes.

.. in Formula 1, whenever an englishman was doing well (at the time, Damon Hill, Jenson Button) Murray Walker used to say "And Englands Damon Hill is doing well", however if it was someone like David Coulthard or Eddie Irvine doing well (Scottish and Irish respectively) this would always be altered to "And Britain's David Coulthard" etc ..

An annoyance I can imagine, but it seems to happen all the time, and I think its just more a case of a bit of ignorance than anything else. Hopefully Sega will patch their error.

Coulthard's nickname was 'the flying Scot.' Hamilton or Button are not known as the flying englishmen and represent Britain. It smacks to me of a bit of paranoia. Either that or the Scot's are just really proud of their stars.

I think its just that us Scots know were a small country in comparison to the rest of the UK and europe, and because if this we have alot more pride in anything our Nation, or fellow Countrymen achieve.

The day Chris Hoy took home 3 golds from the Olympics made dead proud to be Scottish, its just a shame that God Save the Queen had to played when he was presented his medals (No offence).

As for David Coulthard, although he never accomplished alot in terms of winning Grand Prix's etc. us Scots always supported him.

Colin McCrae is another proud Scotsman, and Murray aswell. Its just our mentality. :D

But surely God Save the Queen is the British anthem? The english have their own anthem too. IMO if Hoy wanted to play the Scottish anthem then let him and the same with any English or Welsh people. The sooner we get rid of this queen....

I dont mind being Brittish, but ive always felt that each Nation in the Olympics although representing Britain, should be able to atleast have their respctives Anthems played. Just dont really understand the need in a Royal family this day and age, let alone sing a song about them (The Queen).

Both England and Scotland are guilty of playing up their own athletes to be English or Scottish rather than British. It's only natural when you have 4 countries combined into 1 and there is nothing wrong with this as long as the people in both nations recognise it.

I would say though that people in England seem to be more open to supporting a Scottish athlete/sportsman than the Scots are to be supporting an English athlete/sportsman. Some of us here in Scotland unfortunately have a chip on our shoulder. And yes, Salmond is a smug manipulative jerk.

I dont really care too much about the political side of our nations rivalry. To me its a friendly rivalry in the sporting world, but some people take it too far and start balbbering on about ancient times that should only be reserved for the history books.

Ive always felt that other than the Olympics sportsmen from each of the individual nations should be recognized by there birth nationality. ie Andy Murray is Scottish, and should only be reffered to as Brittish when he competes in the Olympics. Lewis Hamilton English etc...

Ah well, in anycase simple but stupid mistake from either Sega or the devs, that'll be easily rectified. I was simply wondering wether or not he'll be reffered to as Brittish or Scottish when its fixed. :D

I agree that in most sports having the nation as Scotland or England is for the best. But I quite like seeing Scottish athletes run for Britain in the Olympics. I mean, we did great in Beijing and it wouldn't have been as succesful if the nations were split. They could easily play the scottish anthem whe one of our athletes wins for Britain.

I'm in 2 minds about the Davis cup though, not sure myself if it should be UK team, but I guess traditionally its always been that way so theres not much need to change it.

Also, we already see the ahletes run seperately in the Commonweath games, which I also agree with because, obviously, its all the old commonwealth countries competing against each other.

Put simply, I'm happy with it at the moment and all I would change is that they should play the Scottish anthem when a Scottish athlete wins for Britain and an English anthem when England wins for Britain.

On a political level I completely agree. The majority of Scotland is still pro-union remember. Just hope the people in two minds about it arn't sucked in by Jabba the Hut and his empty promises.

On a sporting level it would be crap to have a British football team for example, on the other hand its great having a British olympic team. Like I said before I think its fine the way things are.

Edit @ below: You are maybe looking too deeply into this. Andy Murray was trained out in Spain so by your logic it is a joint effort by Spain/Scotland. There will be so many occasions of this happening that we might aswell have a world team competing against... Mars!

And if scotland were independent they wouldn't compete for britain period. They wouldn't be the only country in Britain missing out on glory so i dont know why you are all for it... Dn't forget English athletes train in Scotland for the winter olympics, it works both ways.

My view on the British Olympic team is that Chris Hoy is stationed in Manchester (maybe Salford but lets not get into the whole what is Manchester thing) so even though he's Scottish he's using English money and expertise.
Same with English athletes using Scottish money and Scottish expertise. How many cyclist in England will now be trained by Hoy.

An athlete in the British team is unlikely to have been trained and financed purely by his own country.

It's a collaborative effort.
If Chris Hoy wants to race independently then by all means say you're Scottish and use the Scottish anthem and flag.

Sport in the home nations are too closely linked.
And the same will go for the Welsh when they have an athlete.

Practically an independent country anyway but if they got complete independence how would they feel about still partaking in the Olympics under Great Britain?
Would be a shame to miss out on the glory and help that comes with it.
Both countries (and the Welsh) are stronger more competitive together.

I completely agree with you on basis that things are fine the way they are right now in regards to our nations potryal in sport. ie I prefer the fact that we have a Brittish team in the olympics, and also agree that the davis cup has always been governed in the way that a Brittish team will compete, and should remain that way.

It's generally a touchy subject though beyond that. For instance the Arguments for and against a Brittish football team to solely compete in the Olympics etc.

Andy Murray competed in both the singles and doubles tournaments in the Beijing Olympics. Due to the fact he was defeated in the 1st round of the singles though, unless you follow him or watch alot of the competitions you'd probably not have noticed. He did however get passed the 1st 2 rounds of the doubles comp. with his brother Jamie ;).

To be honest I find it sad that people care. It's nice to be proud of your country but to be so proud things like this annoy you is just odd. Murray doesn't play tennis for Scotland, he plays it for himself and for money.
It's a mistake that will no doubt be corrected, so people really shouldn't make a fuss. If I were working at SEGA I'd just re-label the guy as Chinese to have a laugh and make light of the situation.

Would be interesting to know what Murray thinks about it. If it was me, personally i'd be miffed , don't get me wrong i'm not one of those English hating , pro nationalist , wave my sword in the air and shouting "freedom" numpties but i am very proud to say i'm Scottish , even although i was born in Germany (army parents).

I have no problem with supporting British athletes , no matter which part of Britain they are from , i refuse to use the term UK because unfortunately i don't think we are as "United" as we used to be. Not sure why there's all the Alex Salmond hatred though , wait until the Tories get in again , then we are truly finished.

As far as a British football team goes ?, that is an entirely different matter , Fifa and Uefa would love that to happen , it would set a precedent and IMO would lead to the death of all the "Home Nation" teams , currently we have in effect 4 votes in footballing terms and most other countries hate this , we have too much influence in world football , if all the teams were to merge then this power would be greatly reduced. No matter how bad we are at football we must keep our separate identity.

I agree with the whole Brittish football team shenanigans. Even if it were only for the olympics, both FIFA and UEFA already know that the combining influence of all the individual governed football bodies in the GB are a force to be recond with. Especially since the Premiership is without a doubt the best league in the world, and the FA know this.

As for Murray, it would be nice to here his side of things (that is of course if he knows of this mishap or not) as he is very well spoken and honest, although it'd be touchy if he said the wrong thing so for the PR side of things he'd probably be asked to keep hush hush about it if he knew. Lets not forget the whole fiasco when a American press member/journalist called him english.

He would definitely be told to keep quiet about it , image is almost more important than talent these days. Most commentators on the telly call him Scottish and this is just one games compamy making a small mistake , the Scottish people would be more inclined to make a huge deal because unfortunately we have very few sporting heroes these days.

For the likes of Chris Hoy , he has always said that he is proud to be Scottish and British , it would be hopeless for the Scottish government to pursue a Scottish olympic team , we do not have the facilities or infrastructure for a start. Hoy is based in Manchester because they have world class facilities , up here it'd be like training in the third world.
