Mature Content for Nintendo in Jeopardy?

Slashgamer Writes: "You can file this post under the 'not good news' label for both Rockstar and Nintendo. According to the NPD, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the DS sold only 89,000 units during the month of March. In case you couldn't figure it out, that's an extremely low number, considering Nintendo's handheld has moved almost 30 million units. Mathematically, that number equals less than 1% of DS owners who actually own GTA Chinatown Wars, to be more specific it's around 0.3%.

Even with the strong reviews and the sandbox game ended up getting some of the best scores on the unit, people failed to even take notice. Let us not forget that we're talking about Grand Theft Auto here, which is already a household name. This is bad news all around and for various reasons. First, the chances of us seeing a 'sequel' to Chinatown Wars is much slimmer, than it was before. Which is a huge disappointment, because the game is truly awesome. But more importantly, the possibility of seeing more 'Mature' rated games on the DS is pretty much determined now. Most companies are going to look at releasing a M-title as a huge gamble, a gamble they will most likely loose."

Duh or not, it sucks for the industry...

Chris3995495d ago (Edited 5495d ago )

I'm not hating on the DS (I have one) and there are always little gems here and there in it's catalog, but the bulk of the software is catered towards casuals and kids.

A hardcore, open-world crime game is just out of place in the DS library.

qface645495d ago

because china town wars didn't sell millions in its first month it means the end for mature games on a nintendo system?

same goes for mardworld sure they wont sell huge numbers but its only been a month seriously give the game some time and the numbers will pick up they won't go to insane numbers but they will do alright

Whoooop5495d ago

Well, it means that if Nintendo decides to make a new IP (which are nowhere to be seen) it will be more of the same or another casual crap.

Also developers like Platinum Games could be better off spending a bit more on development costs and making the game for the 360 or the PS3 to make more profits.

It is a concern... Right now the only thing that will sell well on the Wii is a completely casual game or another Mario/brawl/Zelda or any famous Nintendo game.

Still, any appealing casual game will sell better than any traditional Nintendo game.

penguinhunter5495d ago

Just like the movie industry, video games generally sell better the first few weeks, then at any other time.

" Also developers like Platinum Games could be better off spending a bit more on development costs and making the game for the 360 or the PS3 to make more profits."

Right whoop, cause during the PS2 era their games did great right?
I hardly think that lots of people will get their game as for some reason their games never shine while they are pretty great.

VJ was not a real hit.
GodHand basically killed them.
Okami did poor on the Ps2(with an install base around 100m yeah its pretty bad).

Seriously madworld would have done better on the PS3/360? Perhaps, but hell you just can't imagine "core" gamers going without : I DIDNT BUY A TV FOR A BLACK AND WHITE GAAAAME.

Also lets not pretend every core game on the PS2 sold 100m+ copies of each and every "hardcore" game.
Yes some games don't reach the million mark in a month, but eventually they do climb their way up.

Seferoth755494d ago

Sidar, Dont bring things like facts and reason into this. They KNOW every single PS2 game was hardcore. from Blues clues to Rugrats. All of them are AAA must own adult titles. All you are doing is getting in theway of a bunch of haters. First Madworld was complete crap. Now of course Black and white games sho0uld sell 20 million the first month. GTA china Town wars has worldwide sales of almost 300k. But that doesnt matter. It is a failure because its not on a Sony console.

PS3 games always sell in the millions. I mean just look at how great the sales for Lair, and haze. So great both companies went under.

Anon19745494d ago

Haze sold pretty well. 3/4 of a million, which is rare for any game. Company mismanagement lead to the downfall of both these companies, as well as LucasArts going a different direction which ended up the kiss of death.

We know simply from looking at the financials for companies like EA, Ubisoft, Take Two that the bulk of their revenue comes from the 360 and following closely behind, the PS3. The Wii usually doesn't show up on the radar at all. That should be a legitimate concern for Nintendo. Or, maybe not when you consider how small a percentage of Nintendo's revenue comes from the Wii hardware and software. The handhelds are what pay the bills.

i guess the problem is that the sorta people who would wanna buy gta on the ds would prefer there to be more 'mature' games on the system. take me for example, if i owned a ds i'm sure i'd buy chinatown wars, but i don't fancy buying a ds because theres just not enough games that interest me.

it's the same with wii, 1 or two games i know i'd buy if i owned the system, but theres just not a big enough selection for me to buy a console for.

point being, Nintendo is doing extremely well with the casual market and i can't see that changing so why would a load of 'hardcore' gamers buy a wii/ds and so anyone who wants to play 'mature' games will own a pc/360/ps3 meaning low sales of mature games on the wii/ds

BrotherNick5494d ago

I can see your point, I have little interest in mature games other than an fps once a year or so. So as I don't think I'd like to play Madworld, I'd be more of a Conduit kind of person. It is more of the competitive factor that drives me rather than the blood and guts.

ParanoidMonkey5495d ago

Well, bad sales or not, Chinatown Wars is still the best portable GTA to date. I know that's sort of a cop out, but I really enjoy it. Probably won't see another DS GTA any time soon though...

Da One5494d ago

hands down...........I still can't understand why they haven't made another GTA on the PSP,

Hell even after the whole Piracy fiasco GTA VCS still pushed 2+ million

ape0075495d ago (Edited 5495d ago )

the game is amazing and deep and you know what it's "GRAND THEFT AUTO"

see,if the king of the mature\open world games\the multi million selling franchise didn't sell on a system that has a huge,GAIGANTIC fanbase.........then there's no reasone to look for nintendo systems as a mature systems, all they want is the same silly crap over and over, hahaha if they release a game "fix my brain",it will sell 10 times more than gta

that's why some called nintendo as a kiddy company but you know, it's worse

Im wondering how much THE CONDUIT AND MAD WORLD GONNA SELL ON WIIII

come on sega we want next gen versions of conduit and mad world, gameplay looks amazing in both,HD graphics will elevate the experince,hd graphics gives more blood, intensity, immersion, effe ct,achievements\trophies\xbox live\psn AND........YOU'LL SELL MILLIONS

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies7d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken7d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing697d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker7d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing697d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt7d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken7d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

Sweet. I loved Liberty City Stories despite the city being empty. Those main story missions were tough but fun.

Number1TailzFan194d ago

Both Stories games were far better than GTA 3 IMO, VCS being the best and most enjoyable though.
